The purpose of this study was to analyze the ratio of medial and lateral rotators of glenohumeral joint in the male Brazilian Volleyball Team under 19 and 21 years-old. Twenty athletes under-19 and fifteen athletes under- 21, participated in this study. The Dynamometer Isokinetic Biodex 3 System Pro® was used to assess antagonist/agonist (RL/RM) ratio at 60º/s and 360º/s. A significant difference was found in ratio (RL/RM) between the categories, on the dominant limb (F= 11,840; p=0,0016 at 60º/s and F= 7,00; p= 0,0124 at 360º/s) and on the non-dominant (F= 20,269; p= 0.0001 at 60º/s and F= 11,223; p= 0,0020 at 360º/s). The under-21 athletes of Brazilian Volleyball Team presented RL/RM ratios below the expected values described in the literature

RELIABILITY OF SYMMETRY DIFFERENCES OF DYNAMIC VARIABLES DURING COUNTERMOVEMENT JUMP

    Get PDF
The aim of the study was the determination of the reliability of symmetry differences of peak force, impulse and peak power during Countermovement Jump on a double force platform. The subjects were 12 Brazilian female professional volleyball players who performed five CMJs on a double force platform. Symmetry differences of peak force, impulse and peak power were determined. In order to verify the reliability, the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient was calculated. While symmetry difference of peak force and impulse present an ICC > 0.90, symmetry difference of peak power has only an ICC of 0.77. It can be concluded that the determination of symmetry differences by peak force and impulse during CMJ on a double force platform have higher reliability than symmetry differences of peak power

ANALYSIS OF THE RELIABILITY OF TWO FORCE PLATFORMS FOR THE SIMULTANEOUS COLLECTION OF KINETICS VARIABLES

    Get PDF
The bilateral force asymmetry between lower-body limbs is seen as one of the major causes of injury and decreased performance in sport. The diagnosis can be done through many measuring methods, instruments and protocols. One of the most validated methods in literature is the vertical jump with countermovement performed on a force platform. Many studies show measurement protocols of jumps performed on a force platform where the jumps are carried out in a unipodial or bipodial manner and the data collection takes place in an alternated or sequential way. This study intends to assess the reliability of two force platforms measuring (maximum force and impulse) simultaneously. The results have indicated that the method used is reliable for the collection of the mentioned variables

A Contactless IoT-Based GPS-Tracked Waste Bin to Curb Medical Waste Infections in Ghana

Irregular checking of waste especially in some medical facilities of Ghana leads to overflow of waste. A study by World Health Organisation (WHO) in February 2018 indicates that 15% of the total waste collected from medical facilities may be infectious, toxic, or radioactive and may contribute to unintended release of chemical or biological hazards. Considering the present COVID-19 pandemic and other diseases like ebola and hantavirus, it is critical to properly manage waste collected from medical facilities. In this study, Internet of Things (IoT) is used to design a smart bin to help reduce user contact to waste. Using a flowchart, a schematic model of the system was developed using Proteus 8.11 software. Two HCSR04 ultrasonic sensors were used to measure the waste level in the bin and detect proximity of objects to the bin to trigger an MG996R servo motor for automatic operation of the lid of the waste bin having a monitoring system. A NEO-6M GPS module was used to determine the location of the waste bin and displayed on a 16x2 LCD. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) was created for remote monitoring of waste over the internet. An ESP32 node MCU was programmed using Arduino software and used to interface the system with the GUI. The designed system was constructed and incorporated into a rectangular-shaped plastic bin. During testing, a hand wave at the sensor on the side of the container triggered opening of the bin. Sample waste placed in the bin were detected and real-time information regarding waste levels were sent to a self-designed HTML webpage called ‘Smart Bin’ with dynamic IP address. This system could be used in health facilities to prevent medical waste overflow, limit human contact to waste and avoid spread of infections

Objectives: To biomechanically evaluate the relationships between the outcome of the Combined Elevation Test, its component joint motions, and thoracic spine angles. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: 18 elite swimmers and triathletes (11 males and 7 females). Main outcome measures: Combined Elevation Test outcome in forehead and chin positions. Individual joint contributions to test outcome. Results: No sex differences were found in test components, or between head positions. Test outcome was greater in the forehead position than the chin position (34.3 cm vs 30.2 cm; p0.05). Conclusions: The Combined Elevation Test is an effective screening tool to measure upper limb mobility into shoulder flexion and scapula retraction in both sexes, and thoracic extension in women. It is recommended that the test be performed in the forehead position. If a subject performs poorly on the test, follow up assessments are required to identify the impairment location

    The Rattling of Euler's Disk

The motion of a disk spinning on a horizontal surface has drawn a great deal of interest recently. The objectives of the researches are to find out what produces an increasing rattling sound and why the spinning ends so abruptly. In order to understand the behaviour of the spinning disk better, we derived a mathematical model of the rolling/sliding motion of a thin, rigid disk on a rigid, rough horizontal plane, and found the numerical solution of the related initial value problem. Then we studied the motion of the commercially available Tangent Toy disk [3]. The results show that the normal contact force becomes very large whenever the inclination of the disk becomes small. As the inclination of the disk oscillates with time, the time-graph of the normal contact force exhibits periodical peaks, which correlate well with the peaks in the recorded sound response. They could well be responsible for the rattling sound heard during the motion.\u

Reliability of shoulder rotators isometric strength test using a novel pulley electromechanical dynamometer. Influence of the assessment position

Indexación: Scopus. Background: The shoulder complex, because of its relatively extensive freedom of motion, offers a great variety of testing positions and articular planes for strength examination. Despite this, reliability of results are not clearly addressed. A novel pulley electromechanical dynamometer (FED) (functional electronic dynamometer) could be an alternative in strength assessment, however, the relative and absolute reliability have not been reported in the literature. Objectives: To report the results of shoulder internal (IR) and rotators (ER) peak torque reliability in two assessment positions by FED in asymptomatic subjects. Methods: Fifty-two healthy college students were included and tested twice within a two week period. In a supine position, the subjects randomly performed four isometric strength tests (i.e. IR at 40°, IR at 90°, ER at 40°, and ER at 90° of shoulder abduction). Results: The intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) for relative reliability at 90° were 0.96 (0.94-0.98) for IR and 0.94 (0.90-0.96) for ER. ICC at 40° were 0.89 (0.80-0.94) for IR and 0.97 (0.94-0.98) for ER. Absolute reliability expressed as standard error of measurement compared to the mean (SEM%) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of minimal detectable change percentage (MDC%) at 90° were 8.8% (-20.8, 28.4%) and 11.4% (-28.0, 35.2%) for ER. MDC% at 40° were 12.6% (-35.5, 34.8%) for IR and 18.1% (-28.1, 35, 2%) for ER. Conclusions: Isometric strength testing protocol using FED showed an excellent reproducibility and can be safely used in clinical settings to monitor the strength changes in a group of individuals or in a single individual. © 2018, Asian Journal of Sports Medicine.http://asjsm.com/en/articles/60406.htm
