Early Life Events Carry Over to Influence Pre-Migratory Condition in a Free-Living Songbird
Conditions experienced during development can have long-term consequences for individual success. In migratory songbirds, the proximate mechanisms linking early life events and survival are not well understood because tracking individuals across stages of the annual cycle can be extremely challenging. In this paper, we first use a 13 year dataset to demonstrate a positive relationship between 1st year survival and nestling mass in migratory Savannah sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis). We also use a brood manipulation experiment to show that nestlings from smaller broods have higher mass in the nest relative to individuals from larger broods. Having established these relationships, we then use three years of field data involving multiple captures of individuals throughout the pre-migratory period and a multi-level path model to examine the hypothesis that conditions during development limit survival during migration by affecting an individual's ability to accumulate sufficient lean tissue and fat mass prior to migration. We found a positive relationship between fat mass during the pre-migratory period (Sept–Oct) and nestling mass and a negative indirect relationship between pre-migratory fat mass and fledging date. Our results provide the first evidence that conditions during development limit survival during migration through their effect on fat stores. These results are particularly important given recent evidence showing that body condition of songbirds at fledging is affected by climate change and anthropogenic changes to landscape structure
Inclusive J/ψ production at forward and backward rapidity in p-Pb collisions at √sNN=8.16 TeV
Inclusive J/psi production is studied in p-Pb interactions at a centre-of-mass
energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sqrt(s_NN) = 8.16TeV, using the ALICE detector at the
CERN LHC. The J/psi meson is reconstructed, via its decay to a muon pair, in the centre-of-mass
rapidity intervals 2.03 < ycms < 3.53 and -4.46 < ycms < -2.96, where positive
and negative ycms refer to the p-going and Pb-going direction, respectively. The transverse
momentum coverage is pT < 20 GeV/c. In this paper, ycms- and pT-differential cross
sections for inclusive J/psi production are presented, and the corresponding nuclear modification
factors RpPb are shown. Forward results show a suppression of the J/psi yield with
respect to pp collisions, concentrated in the region pT < 5 GeV/c. At backward rapidity
no significant suppression is observed. The results are compared to previous measurements
by ALICE in p-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5.02TeV and to theoretical calculations. Finally,
the ratios RFB between forward- and backward-ycms RpPb values are shown and discussed

Energy dependence and fluctuations of anisotropic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 and 2.76 TeV
Measurements of anisotropic flow coefficients with two- and multi-particle cumulants
for inclusive charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5.02 and 2.76TeV
are reported in the pseudorapidity range |eta|< 0.8 and transverse momentum 0.2 < pT <
50 GeV/c. The full data sample collected by the ALICE detector in 2015 (2010), corresponding
to an integrated luminosity of 12.7 (2.0) ub^-1 in the centrality range 0-80%,
is analysed. Flow coefficients up to the sixth flow harmonic (v6) are reported and a detailed
comparison among results at the two energies is carried out. The pT dependence
of anisotropic flow coefficients and its evolution with respect to centrality and harmonic
number n are investigated. An approximate power-law scaling of the form vn(pT) ~ pT^(n/3)
is observed for all flow harmonics at low pT (0.2 < pT < 3 GeV/c). At the same time, the
ratios vn/vm^(n/m) are observed to be essentially independent of pT for most centralities up to
about pT = 10 GeV/c. Analysing the differences among higher-order cumulants of elliptic flow (v2),
which have different sensitivities to flow fluctuations, a measurement of the standardised
skewness of the event-by-event v2 distribution P(v2) is reported and constraints
on its higher moments are provided. The Elliptic Power distribution is used to parametrise
P(v2), extracting its parameters from fits to cumulants. The measurements are compared
to different model predictions in order to discriminate among initial-state models and to
constrain the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy-density ratio
Measurement of deuteron spectra and elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV at the LHC
CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQFINANCIADORA DE ESTUDOS E PROJETOS - FINEPFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPThe transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra and elliptic flow coefficient (v(2)) of deuterons and anti-deuterons at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.5) are measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV. The measurement of the p(T) spectra of (anti-)deuterons is done up to 8 GeV/c in 0-10% centrality class and up to 6 GeV/c in 10-20% and 20-40% centrality classes. The v(2) is measured in the 0.8 < p(T) < 5 GeV/c interval and in six different centrality intervals (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40 and 40-50%) using the scalar product technique. Measured pi(+/-), K-+/- and p+(p) over bar transverse-momentum spectra and v(2) are used to predict the deuteron p(T) spectra and v(2) within the Blast-Wave model. The predictions are able to reproduce the v(2) coefficient in the measured p(T) range and the transverse-momentum spectra for p(T) gt; 1.8 GeV/c within the experimental uncertainties. The measurement of the coalescence parameter B-2 is performed, showing a p(T) dependence in contrast with the simplest coalescence model, which fails to reproduce also the measured v(2) coefficient. In addition, the coalescence parameter B-2 and the elliptic flow coefficient in the 20-40% centrality interval are compared with the AMPT model which is able, in its version without string melting, to reproduce the measured v(2)(p(T)) and the B-2(p(T)) trend.7710120CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQFINANCIADORA DE ESTUDOS E PROJETOS - FINEPFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPCONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQFINANCIADORA DE ESTUDOS E PROJETOS - FINEPFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPSem informaçãoSem informaçãoSem informaçãoThe ALICE Collaboration would like to thank all its engineers and technicians for their invaluable contributions to the construction of the experiment and the CERN accelerator teams for the outstanding performance of the LHC complex. Open heavy-flavour production and elliptic flow in p-Pb collisions at the LHC with ALICE
Measurements of open heavy flavour production in p-A collisions allow
the investigation of Cold Nuclear Matter effects. In addition, they are
an important tool for a complementary investigation of the long-range
correlations found in small systems in the light flavour sector. In this
work, production measurements of D mesons at mid-rapidity in p-Pb
collisions at root S-NN = 5.02 TeV are reported. Production yields are
also reported for the heavy-flavour hadron decay electrons at central
rapidity at root(SNN) = 5.02 and 8.16 TeV. The elliptic flow (nu(2)) of
heavy-flavour hadron decay electrons in high multiplicity p-Pb
collisions at root(SNN) = 5.02 TeV is found to be positive with a
significance larger than 5 sigma
Spin alignment measurements using vector mesons with ALICE detector at the LHC
We present new measurements related to spin alignment of K*(0) vector
mesons at mid-rapidity for Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 and
5.02 TeV. The spin alignment measurements are carried out with respect
to production plane and 2nd order event plane. At low p(T) the spin
density matrix element rho(00) for K*(0) is found to have values
slightly below 1/3, while it is consistent with 1/3, i.e. no spin
alignment, at high p(T). Similar values of rho(00) are observed with
respect to both production plane and event plane. Within statistical and
systematic uncertainties, rho(00) values are also found to be
independent of root s(NN). rho(00) also shows centrality dependence with
maximum deviation from 1/3 for mid-central collisions with respect to
both the kinematic planes. The measurements for K*(0) in pp collisions
at root s = 13 TeV and for K-s(0) (a spin 0 hadron) in 20-40\% central
Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV are consistent with no spin
alignment
Muon physics at forward rapidity with the ALICE detector upgrade
ALICE is the experiment specifically designed to study the Quark-Gluon
Plasma (QGP) in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC. The ALICE detector
will be upgraded during the Long Shutdown 2, planned for 2019-2020, in
order to cope with the maximum interaction rate of 50 kHz of Pb-Pb
collisions foreseen for Runs 3 and 4. The ambitious programme of
high-precision measurements, expected for muon physics after 2020,
requires an upgrade of the front-end and readout electronics of the
existing Muon Spectrometer. This concerns the Cathode Pad Chambers (CPC)
used for tracking and the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) used for
triggering and for muon identification. The Muon Forward Tracker (MFT),
an internal tracker added in front of the front absorber of the existing
Muon Spectrometer, is also part of the ALICE detector upgrade programme.
It is based on an assembly of circular planes made of Monolithic Active
Pixel Sensors (MAPS), covering the pseudorapidity range 2.5 < eta < 3.6.
The MFT will improve present measurements and enable new ones. A
selection of results from physics performance studies will be presented,
together with an overview of the technical aspects of the upgrade
project
