    Vaccination of Cattle with the N Terminus of LppQ of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides Results in Type III Immune Complex Disease upon Experimental Infection

    Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) is a serious respiratory disease of cattle caused by Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides. Current vaccines against CBPP induce short-lived immunity and can cause severe postvaccine reactions. Previous studies have identified the N terminus of the transmembrane lipoprotein Q (LppQ-N') of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides as the major antigen and a possible virulence factor. We therefore immunized cattle with purified recombinant LppQ-N' formulated in Freund's adjuvant and challenged them with M. mycoides subsp. mycoides. Vaccinated animals showed a strong seroconversion to LppQ, but they exhibited significantly enhanced postchallenge glomerulonephritis compared to the placebo group (P = 0.021). Glomerulonephritis was characterized by features that suggested the development of antigen-antibody immune complexes. Clinical signs and gross pathological scores did not significantly differ between vaccinated and placebo groups. These findings reveal for the first time the pathogenesis of enhanced disease as a result of antibodies against LppQ during challenge and also argue against inclusion of LppQ-N' in a future subunit vaccine for CBPP

    Antibound poles in cutoff Woods-Saxon and in Salamon-Vertse potentials

    The motion of l=0 antibound poles of the S-matrix with varying potential strength is calculated in a cutoff Woods-Saxon (WS) potential and in the Salamon-Vertse (SV) potential, which goes to zero smoothly at a finite distance. The pole position of the antibound states as well as of the resonances depend on the cutoff radius, especially for higher node numbers. The starting points (at potential zero) of the pole trajectories correlate well with the range of the potential. The normalized antibound radial wave functions on the imaginary k-axis below and above the coalescence point have been found to be real and imaginary, respectively

    Improving statistical skills through students’ participation in the development of resources

    This paper summarizes the evaluation of a project that involved undergraduate mathematics students in the development of teaching and learning resources for statistics modules taught in various departments of a university. This evaluation regards students’ participation in the project and its impact on their learning of statistics, as characterized in terms of statistical reasoning, statistical thinking, and skills for statistical consultancy. The participation of students is evaluated from the viewpoint of communities of practice. The evaluation resulted in a characterization of the benefits of such a project and suggestions for implementations of future projects, and in addition brought to light new theoretical elements both as regards the learning of statistics and as regards communities of practice. In particular, the analysis highlighted contributions of the students involved to resource development practice in the community of university statistics teachers, as well as contributions to students’ learning as a result of participation in this community

    The computation of detection probabilities and arrival time distributions within Bohmian mechanics in general needs the explicit knowledge of a relevant sample of trajectories. Here it is shown how for one-dimensional systems and rigid inertial detectors these quantities can be computed without calculating any trajectories.     Cystic Dilatations of the Common Bile Duct in Adults

    Cystic dilatations of the common bile duct are believed to be of congenital etiology with most cases presenting in childhood. During the last 20 years, 10 patients with cystic dilatations of the bile duct were treated in our Department. There were 5 men and 5 women with an age range of 35–81 years. Clinical presentation consisted of right hypohondrial pain, nausea, vomiting and a history of obstructive jaundice. Diagnosis was established by ultrasound, cholangiography and ERCP in most cases. According to the Todani classification system, 5 patients had type I cysts, 4 had type II and one had type III. At the time of surgery, main associated diseases were choledocholithiasis in 3 cases and cholangitis in 2 cases. One patient (type III) underwent endoscopic sphincterotomy; 4 patients underwent internal drainage and 2 of them developed mild cholangitis postoperatively; 5 patients underwent excision of the cyst and a biliary-enteric bypass and developed no main complications. Patients remained in good health during long-term follow-up. We conclude that cyst excision is the treatment ofchoice for adults in order to reduce postoperative morbidity and the potential risk of malignancy

    Over the last few years, the knowledge of the interstellar matter (ISM) of early type galaxies has increased dramatically. Many early type galaxies are now known to have ISM in three different phases: cold (neutral hydrogen (HI), dust and molecular material), warm (ionized) and hot (S-ray emitting) gas. Early type galaxies have smaller masses of cold ISM (10 to the 7th power - 10 to the 8th power solar mass; Jura et al. 1987) than later type spiral galaxies, while they have far more hot gas (10 to the 9th power - 10 to the tenth power solar mass; Forman et al. 1985, Canizares et al. 1987). In order to understand the relationship between the different phases of the ISM and the role of the ISM in fueling radio continuum sources and star formation, researchers compared observational data from a wide range of wavelengths

    Celestial superamplitudes

    We study celestial amplitudes in (super) Yang-Mills theory using a parametrization of the spinor helicity variables where their overall phase is not fixed by the little group action. In this approach the spin constraint h − ¯ h = J for celestial conformal primaries emerges naturally from a new Mellin transform, and the action of conformal transformations on celestial amplitudes is derived. Applying this approach to N = 4 super Yang-Mills, we show how the appropriate definition of on-shell superspace coordinates leads naturally to a formulation of chiral celestial superamplitudes and a representation of the generators of the four-dimensional superconformal algebra on the celestial sphere, which by construction annihilate all tree-level celestial superamplitudes
