    The magnetocrystalline anisotropy of dysprosium and terbium-scandium alloys

    The constant K(_4) for the hexagonal magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the basal plane has been measured at various temperatures between 77K and 180K for alloys of Terbium and Scandium of compositions. Tb(_x)(^so)(_1-x) where x = 0.695, 0.825 and 0.89 using a torque magnetometer with automatic balancing and recording. Simple methods were devised for setting up the instrument and for analysing torque curves so as to correct for shearing and distortions introduced by rotational hysteresis. Instability in the magnetometer was cured by increasing the speed of response. Three methods of calibratior were compared. The variation of K(_4) with temperature for the Tb/So alloys indicates that the anisobropy is of single ion origin and due to the second order magnetostriction of hexagonal symmetry. Analysis of the results of P.K. Ely ( 1967, Ph.D. thesis, University of Durham, unpublished) leads to the same conclusion for pure Terbium. Estimates of at absolute zero indicate that the hexagonal anisotropy contributes significantly to the driving energy to ferromagnetism in pure Terbium end the Terbium rich alloys0Reported changes in the easy axis of Dysprosium have been investigated. Those below 80K are associated with hysteresis in the movement of the domain walls and are not reproducible. Those above 130K may be explained by the existence of fan-like spin structures but could also be due to the uncertainty associated with determinations of easy axis using a torque magnetometer with an unsaturated specimen

    Constant net-time headway as key mechanism behind pedestrian flow dynamics

    We show that keeping a constant lower limit on the net-time headway is the key mechanism behind the dynamics of pedestrian streams. There is a large variety in flow and speed as functions of density for empirical data of pedestrian streams, obtained from studies in different countries. The net-time headway however, stays approximately constant over all these different data sets. By using this fact, we demonstrate how the underlying dynamics of pedestrian crowds, naturally follows from local interactions. This means that there is no need to come up with an arbitrary fit function (with arbitrary fit parameters) as has traditionally been done. Further, by using not only the average density values, but the variance as well, we show how the recently reported stop-and-go waves [Helbing et al., Physical Review E, 75, 046109] emerge when local density variations take values exceeding a certain maximum global (average) density, which makes pedestrians stop.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Phase Coherence and Superfluid-Insulator Transition in a Disordered Bose-Einstein Condensate

    We have studied the effects of a disordered optical potential on the transport and phase coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of 7Li atoms. At moderate disorder strengths (V_D), we observe inhibited transport and damping of dipole excitations, while in time-of-flight images, random but reproducible interference patterns are observed. In-situ images reveal that the appearance of interference is correlated with density modulation, without complete fragmentation.     Investigating the Goban Spur rifted continental margin, offshore Ireland, through integration of new seismic reflection and potential field data

    The Goban Spur, offshore Ireland, is a magma-poor rifted continental margin conjugate to the well-studied Newfoundland margin, offshore Canada. Published studies demonstrated that a 70-km-wide zone of exhumed serpentinized mantle lies between oceanic crust and stretched continental crust at the seaward limit of Goban Spur. However, the along-strike extent of this serpentinized zone has, until now, been unknown due to insufficient data coverage. The crustal architecture of the margin is complicated due to its multi-staged tectonic history. Here, six newly acquired multi-channel seismic reflection lines are processed and interpreted, along with vintage seismic profiles, to characterize its structure and evolution. These seismic profiles reveal significant along-strike structural variations along the Goban Spur margin, and allow us to delimit five distinct crustal zones related to different rifting stages and their regional extents. The geometries of each crustal domain are variable along the margin strike, probably suggestive of different extension rates during the evolution of the margin or inherited variations in crustal composition and rheology. The transitional zone between oceanic crust and stretched continental crust consists of both shallow peridotite ridges and deeper exhumed serpentinized mantle, much like the conjugate Iberian and Newfoundland margins. Above the top basement in the exhumed domain, the syn-exhumed sediments show strikingly weak reflectivity, rarely seen at other magma-poor margins. Magmatic events occur coincident with each rifting stage, and the volume of magmatic accretions increases from NW to SE, more than previously interpreted. Plate reconstruction of the Goban Spur and its possible conjugate – the Flemish Cap, shows asymmetry in the crustal architectures, likely due to rift evolution involving more 3-D complexity than can be explained by simple 2-D extensional kinematics

    Photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein Condensate near a Feshbach Resonance

    We measure the effect of a magnetic Feshbach resonance (FR) on the rate and light-induced frequency shift of a photoassociation resonance in ultracold 7^7Li. The photoassociation-induced loss rate coefficient, KpK_p, depends strongly on magnetic field, varying by more than a factor of 104^4 for fields near the FR. At sufficiently high laser intensities, KpK_p for a thermal gas decreases with increasing intensity, while saturation is observed for the first time in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The frequency shift is also strongly field-dependent and exhibits an anomalous blue-shift for fields just below the FR.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. v2: updated comparison with theory; added references; added tick marks to Fig. 1 inset.     The determinants of hotels' marketing managers' green marketing behaviour

    Little is known about the factors underlying the pro-environmental behaviour of marketing managers. This paper explores the determinants of green marketing practices in the Red Sea hotel sector in Egypt. The research model assesses green marketing practices against the personal and organisational values of the marketing managers, together with a range of organisational and demographic variables expected to influence hotels' environmental behaviour. From a valid sample of 89 marketing managers responsible for 194 hotels, it was found that organisational contextual variables, and in particular targeting Western tourists, being affiliated to an international hotel chain and the marketers' own demographics, including age, academic subject studied and gender, were the best predictors of more proactive green marketing. Personal environmental values did not explain the pro-environmental behaviour of marketers, and the organisational environmental values that had explained part of their ethical behaviour had resulted from voluntarism rather than utilitarian or conformance-based values. Government policies also appeared to be ineffective determinants. The implications for green marketing practices are also discussed. © 2010 Taylor & Francis

    What explains the uneven take-up of ISO 14001 at the global level?: a panel-data analysis

    Since its release in the mid-1990s, close to 37 000 facilities have been certified to ISO 14001, the international voluntary standard for environmental management systems. Yet, despite claims that the standard can be readily adapted to very different corporate and geographic settings, its take-up has been highly geographically variable. This paper contributes to a growing body of work concerned with explaining the uneven diffusion of ISO 14001 at the global level. Drawing from the existing theoretical and empirical literature we develop a series of hypotheses about how various economic, market, and regulatory factors influence the national count of ISO 14001 certifications. These hypotheses are then tested using econometric estimation techniques with data for a panel of 142 developed and developing countries. We find that per capita ISO 14001 counts are positively correlated with income per capita, stock of foreign direct investment, exports of goods and services to Europe and Japan, and pressure from civil society. Conversely, productivity and levels of state intervention are negatively correlated. The paper finishes by offering a number of recommendations to policymakers concerned with accelerating the diffusion of voluntary environmental standards
