Hellinger Distance Trees for Imbalanced Streams
Classifiers trained on data sets possessing an imbalanced class distribution
are known to exhibit poor generalisation performance. This is known as the
imbalanced learning problem. The problem becomes particularly acute when we
consider incremental classifiers operating on imbalanced data streams,
especially when the learning objective is rare class identification. As
accuracy may provide a misleading impression of performance on imbalanced data,
existing stream classifiers based on accuracy can suffer poor minority class
performance on imbalanced streams, with the result being low minority class
recall rates. In this paper we address this deficiency by proposing the use of
the Hellinger distance measure, as a very fast decision tree split criterion.
We demonstrate that by using Hellinger a statistically significant improvement
in recall rates on imbalanced data streams can be achieved, with an acceptable

Nitrogenase activity associated with codium species from New Zealand marine habitats
Nitrogenase activity, measured as acetylene reduction, was recorded at rates up to 1028 nmol.h \g * dry weight for Codium adhaerens (Cabr.) Ag. var. convolutum Dellow and Codium fragile (Sur.) Hariot subsp. tomentosoides (Van Goor) Silva collected from New Zealand habitats. In both species the ability to reduce acetylene is invariably associated with the presence of a heterocystous blue-green alga, Calothrix sp., epiphytic or embedded in the Codium thallus. A highly significant (P < 0.001) correlation between heterocyst frequency and nitrogenase activity was found. Nitrogenase and net photosynthesis of the Codium-Calothrix system have different steady-state responses to light intensity, and the kinetics of the two processes also differ in that nitrogenase is slow to respond to illumination or darkening. Glucose additions to Codium did not significantly increase nitrogenase activity. Nitrogenase is relatively insensitive to oxygen tension over the range 0-1.0 atm (0-1.033 kgf.cnT2) and still occurs at 1.5 atm (1.55 kgf.cm"2); this condition is unique in all nitrogenase systems thus far reported. Collectively these facts suggest that Calothrix is the agent primarily responsible for nitrogenase activity in these Codium species
Measurement of the Michel Parameter xi" in Polarized Muon Decay and Implications on Exotic Couplings of the Leptonic Weak Interaction
The Michel parameter xi" has been determined from a measurement of the
longitudinal polarization of positrons emitted in the decay of polarized and
depolarized muons. The result, xi" = 0.981 +- 0.045stat +- 0.003syst, is
consistent with the Standard Model prediction of unity, and provides an order
of magnitude improvement in the relative precision of this parameter. This
value sets new constraints on exotic couplings beyond the dominant V-A

Quantifying Compliance Costs for Small Businesses in New Zealand
This paper reports on a small-scale study of the compliance costs of small New Zealand businesses. Participating firms were asked to keep a record of both time spent and expenditure directly incurred over a thirteen-week period. This differs from previous studies that rely on a firm's recall of how much time has been spent on compliance over the previous year. The results suggest that New Zealand small businesses on average spend less time and money on compliance than has been indicated in previous studies. However a number offirms do perceive compliance to be a major issue and in some cases this perception prevents firms from expanding
Benchmark full configuration-interaction calculations on HF and NH2
Full configuration-interaction (FCI) calculations are performed at selected geometries for the 1-sigma(+) state of HF and the 2-B(1) and 2-A(1) states of NH2 using both DZ and DZP gaussian basis sets. Higher excitations become more important when the bonds are stretched and the self-consistent field (SCF) reference becomes a poorer zeroth-order description of the wave function. The complete active space SCF - multireference configuration-interaction (CASSCF-MRCI) procedure gives excellent agreement with the FCI potentials, especially when corrected with a multi-reference analog of the Davidson correction
A room temperature 19-channel magnetic field mapping device for cardiac signals
We present a multichannel cardiac magnetic field imaging system built in
Fribourg from optical double-resonance Cs vapor magnetometers. It consists of
25 individual sensors designed to record magnetic field maps of the beating
human heart by simultaneous measurements on a grid of 19 points over the chest.
The system is operated as an array of second order gradiometers using

Dimethyl sulphide in some Australian red wines
DMS levels in Cabernet Sauvignon wine from the Coonawarra area of southeast South Australia were shown to vary from 42 to 910 μg l-1. Results indicate that the levels are not dependent on age but rather vary from vintage to vintage. This study does not discount the development of DMS with bottle age as it is an 'historical' survey but suggests that the levels of DMS are vintage related and may depend on viticultural practices and vinification techniques. The odour threshold for DMS in Cabernet Sauvignon was 0.07 μl l-1 (60μg l -1)
Magnetodielectric coupling of infrared phonons in single crystal CuOSeO
Reflection and transmission as a function of temperature have been measured
on a single crystal of the magnetoelectric ferrimagnetic compound
CuOSeO utilizing light spanning the far infrared to the visible
portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The complex dielectric function and
optical properties were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a
Drude-Lortentz model. The fits of the infrared phonons show a magnetodielectric
effect near the transition temperature (~K). Assignments to
strong far infrared phonon modes have been made, especially those exhibiting
anomalous behavior around the transition temperature
Mechanism of droplet-formation in a supersonic microfluidic spray device
Spray drying is an approach employed in automotive, food, and pharmaceutical industries as a robust and cost efficient liquid atomization technique offering direct control over droplet dimensions. The majority of commercially available spray nozzles are designed for large throughput spray drying applications or uniform surface coating, but microfluidic nebulizers have recently been developed as small scale alternatives. Here, we explore the physical parameters that define the droplet size and formation under supersonic flow conditions commonly found in microfluidic spray drying systems. We examined the spray nozzle operation using high speed imaging and laser scattering measurements, which allowed us to describe the spray regimes and droplet size distributions. It was determined that by using this spray nozzle device, droplets with diameters of 4–8 μm could be generated. Moreover, we show that the supersonic de Laval nozzle model can be used to predict the average droplet size. Our approach can be used as a platform for interfacing fluid microprocessing with gas phase detection and characterization
