    Mental health clients confirm the value of occupation in building competence and self-identity

    Engagement in occupation is proposed to enhance health and wellbeing. To date, few studies have demonstrated this in relation to people with mental health problems. This study aimed to evaluate occupational therapy’s beliefs in the restorative powers of occupation from the perspective of people with enduring mental health problems living in the community. Qualitative research methods were used in two mental health day service settings: a workshop, where woodwork was provided as a medium for creative therapy, and a drop-in facility. Participant observation was undertaken over 10 sessions and, during six in-depth interviews, the clients were asked about their occupational experiences and whether they had perceived any benefits from engagement in occupation. Content and inductive analysis as well as concept mapping of the data resulted in emergent themes and subthemes. Occupation was identified both as a means for building competence through the acquisition of skills, coping with challenges and achieving success and as a medium for developing self-identity through the drive to create, feelings of usefulness and engendering a sense of self. These themes help to support the need for an increase in the provision of meaningful occupation for people with enduring mental health problems. However, further research is required to develop and corroborate the findings

    Cargo throughput and survivability trade-offs in force sustainment operations

    Force sustainment requires an optimum supply of resources to maintain and project power in an area. With sustainment reaching ever farther from the origin of supplies, commanders find an increasing exposure of their logistic trains to risk. To mitigate the increased risk from hostile forces, the survivability of supply vehicles must be considered in force sustainment operations to accurately capture a true throughput projection. Development of an optimum throughput plan for littoral sustainment will reduce overall risk to supplies and maximize throughput to the war-fighter. The research conducted focused on maximizing throughput considering the size, quantity, and risk to the cargo vehicles traversing the littoral arena. The major risk component studied is comprised primarily of littoral mines, though this risk is comparable to many other survivability situations.     Effects of moisture on torsion and flexure properties of graphite-epoxy composites

    The effects of moisture and temperature on unidirectional and multi-ply laminates of T300/934 and AS/3501 graphite-epoxy systems were investigated. Properties studied were static flexure strength, and flexure and torsion fatigue strengths at room temperature and at 74 C. Specimens with increased moisture content showed a reduced static flexure strength; water as the test environment had only a negligible influence. In flexure fatigue and torsion fatigue, the water environment caused somewhat reduced fatigue strengths at room temperature and significantly greater degradation in 74 C water. The failure mode in all cases was interlaminar delamination

    Using metaphor to illuminate quality in early childhood education

    This paper reports on a study in which educators from four early childhood centres used metaphor to discuss their provision of high-quality early childhood education. Qualitative mining of focus group data confirmed ‘quality’ to be complex, multi-dimensional and value-laden. Findings contribute to understandings of quality in early childhood education through four key themes: ‘quality’ as a synergetic flow; the facilitative stance and impact of leaders in the enactment of leadership; children as active contributors to quality; and the role of love. Metaphor is shown to be a valuable tool that can highlight tangible and intangible quality contributors, how these contributors link together and the contextual specificity from which quality in individual early childhood education settings emanates

    Religious faith and psychosocial adaptation among stroke patients in Kuwait: A mixed method study

This study explored quantitative associations among religious faith, self-efficacy, and life satisfaction in 40 female stroke patients and explored the influence of religion within stroke rehabilitation through qualitative interviews with 12 health professionals. The quantitative measure of religious faith did not relate to life satisfaction or self-efficacy in stroke patients. However, the health professionals described religious coping as influencing adaptation post-stroke. Fatalistic beliefs were thought to have mixed influences on rehabilitation. Measuring religious faith among Muslims through a standardized scale is debated. The qualitative accounts suggest that religious beliefs need to be acknowledged in stroke rehabilitation in Kuwait

    Co-constructing desired activities : Small-scale activity decisions in occupational therapy

    Social inclusion and exclusion are buzzwords in today’s political discourse. While there are many causes of social exclusion, one of the factors repeatedly shown to lead to social exclusion is mental illness, which may hinder people in developing themselves in accordance with their wishes and abilities. Participation is a key dimension of social inclusion—and one that we particularly seek to increase understanding of in this volume. We focus on participation taking place in face-to-face social encounters, seeking to get to the root of the preconditions and consequences of participation by unraveling the interactional processes that underlie what makes it possible. We presuppose that participation in any social or societal sphere presupposes social interaction, which in turn requires the capacity to coordinate with and make sense of others’ actions. Thus, drawing on joint decision-making as a specific arena of social interaction, where the participants’ collaborative management of the turn-by-turn sequential unfolding of interaction can have tangible consequences for the participants’ social and economic circumstances, we seek to increase understanding of the specific vulnerabilities that individuals with mental illness have in this context.In occupational therapy, a therapist and client engage in shared activities that they perform collaboratively during therapeutic sessions. An important part of this joint performance involves providing the client with the opportunity to make short-term decisions on the activities they wish to perform. Analyzing 15 occupational therapy encounters at psychiatric outpatient clinics, in the chapter I explore the functions of these small-scale decisions. The analysis demonstrates that therapists (1) make room for the client’s proposals by shaping the activity context and (2) make proposals themselves on the ways the performance should be accomplished. To summarize, clients are given decision-making power over the content of the activity, whereas therapists use their decision-making power to assist the client’s performance. The analysis shows how small-scale decisions can be employed to construct the occupational performance as shared endeavors and to position the clients as active subjects rather than objects of the professionals’ performance.Peer reviewe

    Teacher quality in the twenty first century: new lives, old truths

    This chapter is based upon a keynote address to the first global teacher education summit, organised by Beijing Normal University in 2011, in which research across the world about influences which affect teachers' sense of professional identity, capacity for compassion, commitment, resilience and effectiveness long after they have graduated from their pre-service education and training programmes in universities and colleges were shared. The findings suggest that teaching pre-service students about how the conditions in which they work may enhance or diminish their capacity to teach to their best and how they might act to mediate these is a key part of the work of all teacher educators and an important focus for the work of educational researchers

    Teacher resilience in adverse contexts: issues of professionalism and professional identity

    Teacher resilience is a construct that is relative, developmental and dynamic; it is socially constructed and depends on personal and professional dispositions. Issues of commitment, professionalism, and professional identity, for instance, need to be taken into account if teacher resilience is to be fully understood. In this chapter I draw upon a larger piece of research aimed at investigating teachers’ work and lives in challenging circumstances. Data were collected through a national survey (n=2702 teachers), focus group (n=99 teachers) and interviews to 11 school principals. Findings suggest the connection between teacher commitment and resilience which are associated with issues of school culture and leadership, a sense of vocation, and teachers’ beliefs and professional values. Factors and sources of teacher motivation and resilience are also identified within a context marked by teacher intensification, lack of trust, worsening of teaching conditions, lower social and economic status and legislative “tsunami”.     Reflective writing analysis approach based on semantic concepts : an evaluation of WordNet affect efficiency

    Automatic analysis of reflective writing involves identifying indicator strings and using string matching or rule matching processes, which flag sections of a text containing reflective material. The problem with the string-based approach is its inability to deal with knowledge inference from the text, such as the content, context, relevance, clarity, and interconnection, which can be identified by semantic analysis. The semantic analysis depends mainly on mapping the text into stored knowledge sources, such as WordNet, and analyzing the associations in the underlying knowledge source. In this paper, a semantic-based approach for reflective writing analysis is proposed, in which the input text, which is being analyzed, is mapped into semantic concepts. Moreover, a machine learning (ML) approach for reflective writing identification and analysis has been implemented to overcome the limitations of rule execution and keyword matching. The proposed approach addresses the efficiency of using several effective concepts, correlated with effective words that are identified in WordNet-Affect. The input text is classified into reflective or non-reflective categories, after which the input text is classified into various reflective classes, based on the type of the document. Moreover, the concepts in WordNet-Affect are evaluated and analyzed to demonstrate their effects on classification and labeling tasks
