The Enron/Andersen Collapse: Ongoing Implications for Executive M.B.A. Programs
[This article is based on David Springate’s presentation at the 2002 E.M.B.A. Council meeting in Keystone, Colorado, USA.]
The premise of this article is that we can help develop leadership among the business men and women that are our executive students and, at the same time, serve society and the economy better if we move to modify Executive MBA programs given recent events. Given corporate and ethical lapses by some executives, our programs need some new emphasis, courses and exposures. Parts of our existing programs need tweaking. Further there is need for increased emphasis on judgment formation. I offer below some suggestions for doing this and, also, results of a quick look for changes recently instituted in Executive MBA programs
Recycling of peroxiredoxin IV provides a novel pathway for disulphide formation in the endoplasmic reticulum
Ero1 is thought to be the only oxidase that mediates the re-oxidation of protein disulphide isomerases (PDIs) during oxidative protein folding in the ER. This study reveals that peroxiredoxin IV can also directly oxidize PDI-family members and thus act as a second source of oxidizing equivalents for disulphide-bond formation in the ER
Evidence of reduced surface electron-phonon scattering in the conduction band of Bi_{2}Se_{3} by non-equilibrium ARPES
The nature of the Dirac quasiparticles in topological insulators calls for a
direct investigation of the electron-phonon scattering at the \emph{surface}.
By comparing time-resolved ARPES measurements of the TI Bi_{2}Se_{3} with
different probing depths we show that the relaxation dynamics of the electronic
temperature of the conduction band is much slower at the surface than in the
bulk. This observation suggests that surface phonons are less effective in
cooling the electron gas in the conduction band.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Probing the structure and dynamics of molecular clusters using rotational wavepackets
The chemical and physical properties of molecular clusters can heavily depend
on their size, which makes them very attractive for the design of new materials
with tailored properties. Deriving the structure and dynamics of clusters is
therefore of major interest in science. Weakly bound clusters can be studied
using conventional spectroscopic techniques, but the number of lines observed
is often too small for a comprehensive structural analysis. Impulsive alignment
generates rotational wavepackets, which provides simultaneous information on
structure and dynamics, as has been demonstrated successfully for isolated
molecules. Here, we apply this technique for the firsttime to clusters
comprising of a molecule and a single helium atom. By forcing the population of
high rotational levels in intense laser fields we demonstrate the generation of
rich rotational line spectra for this system, establishing the highly
delocalised structure and the coherence of rotational wavepacket propagation.
Our findings enable studies of clusters of different sizes and complexity as
well as incipient superfluidity effects using wavepacket methods.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Momentum resolved spin dynamics of bulk and surface excited states in the topological insulator
The prospective of optically inducing a spin polarized current for spintronic
devices has generated a vast interest in the out-of-equilibrium electronic and
spin structure of topological insulators (TIs). In this Letter we prove that
only by measuring the spin intensity signal over several order of magnitude in
spin, time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (STAR-PES) experiments
is it possible to comprehensively describe the optically excited electronic
states in TIs materials. The experiments performed on
reveal the existence of a Surface-Resonance-State in the 2nd bulk band gap
interpreted on the basis of fully relativistic ab-initio spin resolved
photoemission calculations. Remarkably, the spin dependent relaxation of the
hot carriers is well reproduced by a spin dynamics model considering two
non-interacting electronic systems, derived from the excited surface and bulk
states, with different electronic temperatures.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figure
rEHR: An R package for manipulating and analysing Electronic Health Record data
Research with structured Electronic Health Records (EHRs) is expanding as data becomes more accessible; analytic methods advance; and the scientific validity of such studies is increasingly accepted. However, data science methodology to enable the rapid searching/extraction, cleaning and analysis of these large, often complex, datasets is less well developed. In addition, commonly used software is inadequate, resulting in bottlenecks in research workflows and in obstacles to increased transparency and reproducibility of the research. Preparing a research-ready dataset from EHRs is a complex and time consuming task requiring substantial data science skills, even for simple designs. In addition, certain aspects of the workflow are computationally intensive, for example extraction of longitudinal data and matching controls to a large cohort, which may take days or even weeks to run using standard software. The rEHR package simplifies and accelerates the process of extracting ready-for-analysis datasets from EHR databases. It has a simple import function to a database backend that greatly accelerates data access times. A set of generic query functions allow users to extract data efficiently without needing detailed knowledge of SQL queries. Longitudinal data extractions can also be made in a single command, making use of parallel processing. The package also contains functions for cutting data by time-varying covariates, matching controls to cases, unit conversion and construction of clinical code lists. There are also functions to synthesise dummy EHR. The package has been tested with one for the largest primary care EHRs, the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), but allows for a common interface to other EHRs. This simplified and accelerated work flow for EHR data extraction results in simpler, cleaner scripts that are more easily debugged, shared and reproduced
Evolution of Ultracold, Neutral Plasmas
We present the first large-scale simulations of an ultracold, neutral plasma,
produced by photoionization of laser-cooled xenon atoms, from creation to
initial expansion, using classical molecular dynamics methods with open
boundary conditions. We reproduce many of the experimental findings such as the
trapping efficiency of electrons with increased ion number, a minimum electron
temperature achieved on approach to the photoionization threshold, and
recombination into Rydberg states of anomalously-low principal quantum number.
In addition, many of these effects establish themselves very early in the
plasma evolution ( ns) before present experimental observations begin.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR
Asymmetric emission of high energy electrons in the two-dimensional hydrodynamic expansion of large xenon clusters irradiated by intense laser fields
Energy spectra and angular distributions have been measured of electrons that
are emitted upon disassembly of following irradiation by intense
(10 W cm) laser pulses whose durations are varied over
the 100-2200 fs range. The cluster explosion dynamics occur in the hydrodynamic
regime. Electron emission is found to be unexpectedly asymmetric and exhibits a
resonance when the laser pulse duration is 1 ps. These results are
rationalized by extending the hydrodynamic model to also take into account the
force that the light field exerts on the polarization charge that is induced on
surface of the cluster. We show that the magnitude of this electrostrictive
force is comparable to those of Coulombic and the hydrodynamic forces, and it
exhibits resonance behavior. Contrary to earlier understanding, we find that
low-energy electrons are connected to the resonance in energy absorption by the
cluster. The high-energy electrons seem to be produced by a mechanism that is
