Computation of turbulent high speed mixing layers using a two-equation turbulence model

    Get PDF
A two-equation turbulence model was extended to be applicable for compressible flows. A compressibility correction based on modelling the dilational terms in the Reynolds stress equations were included in the model. The model is used in conjunction with the SPARK code for the computation of high speed mixing layers. The observed trend of decreasing growth rate with increasing convective Mach number in compressible mixing layers is well predicted by the model. The predictions agree well with the experimental data and the results from a compressible Reynolds stress model. The present model appears to be well suited for the study of compressible free shear flows. Preliminary results obtained for the reacting mixing layers are included

The purpose of this study was to examine the interaction effects of gender and programs of study on attitudes of postgraduate diploma in teaching (PGDT) students towards the teaching profession. The main aim of the study was to find out whether there are any significant interaction effects of gender and programs of study of PGDT students’ attitude towards the teaching profession. A descriptive survey was carried out among PGDT students during the year 2016/2017 regular session with a population of 371 students. The survey was conducted between science and non-science students in the department of teacher education at Mekelle University, Ethiopia. Using stratified random sampling method, 130 student-teachers were selected as sample for the study. A scale entitled “attitude towards teaching profession” was developed and validated by the researchers based on established procedures in the literature (Aliyu Musa and Ado Abdu Bichi, 2015). A scale contained 15 items to be scored on the five-point Likert scale as Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Neutral(N), Disagree (D) and Strongly Disagree (SD) was used. The data analysis of descriptive statistics through quantitative analysis by computing SPSS 16.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) for Windows 10 was employed. Statistical techniques which include percentage analysis for levels, mean, standard deviation and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were also used for data analysis and interpretation. The findings of the two-way ANOVA demonstrated that there are no significant interaction effects of gender and programs of study on attitude towards the teaching profession of PGDT students. A correlation analysis of gender and programs of a study indicated that the student teachers’ attitude towards the teaching profession was positively related to gender and programs of study. Background: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex immune-mediated condition. Systemic sclerosis related cardiac pathologies can be detected in an early stage using various imaging techniques. Aim was to study cardiac involvement in patients with systemic sclerosis. Methods: The present study was carried out as a descriptive hospital-based study of 31 patients with systemic sclerosis above 13 years of age, of either sex or who fulfilled American Rheumatism Association (ARA) diagnostic criteria. A detailed profile of lab investigations and imaging including inflammatory markers, immunological parameters, ECG and ECHO were done. Data analysis was done using SPSS (statistical package for social sciences) version 21.0. A p value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Median age of the study patients was 36 years and 90% females. Nearly 19% of the patients were classified as limited, 39% as early diffuse and 42% as late diffuse systemic sclerosis. Rheumatoid factor was positive in 19% of the patients, while antinuclear antibodies (ANA) was positive in all the patients. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) was noted in 61%. Right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) was relatively higher in limited SSc patients. Patients with late diffuse SSc had higher RVSP than early diffuse SSc. RV systolic function assessed by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) showed abnormally low value (<18) in five patients. Conclusions: Considerable proportion of patients with systemic sclerosis present with cardiac involvement. Tissue Doppler imaging can help in diagnosing subclinical RV dysfunction by measuring TEI index of right ventricle, which can predict PAH

The photovoltaic (PV) panel depends on irradiance, temperature and load. The power produced in this system is not optimal. Hence, maximum power is extracted from PV array. MPPT varies the electrical operating point of the PV modul es which delivers maximum available power. A new model designed that uses open circuit voltage and short circuit current, sampled from a reference PV Panel. Using these measurements the maximum power is been tracked from main panel without breaking the power transferred to load. A DC-DC converter was used to transfer maximum powernbsp between source and load

Shape Transition in the Epitaxial Growth of Gold Silicide in Au Thin Films on Si(111)

    Get PDF
Growth of epitaxial gold silicide islands on bromine-passivated Si(111) substrates has been studied by optical and electron microscopy, electron probe micro analysis and helium ion backscattering. The islands grow in the shape of equilateral triangles up to a critical size beyond which the symmetry of the structure is broken, resulting in a shape transition from triangle to trapezoid. The island edges are aligned along Si[110]Si[110] directions. We have observed elongated islands with aspect ratios as large as 8:1. These islands, instead of growing along three equivalent [110] directions on the Si(111) substrate, grow only along one preferential direction. This has been attributed to the vicinality of the substrate surface.Comment: revtex version 3.0, 11 pages 4 figures available on request from [email protected] - IP/BBSR/93-6

    Get PDF
Cluster bean seeds were grown in the presence of  0, 10, 25, 50, 100,150 and 200 mgl-l of zinc sulphate solution in order to asses the effect of metal on germination, growth and biochemical changes. The results indicated that low level of zinc concentration (10 and 25 mgl-l) showed a significant increase in the germination, seedling growth and biochemical content; whereas the higher concentrations (50-200 mgl-l) decreased the same except for proline content

Flow sorting of marine bacterioplankton after fluorescence in situ hybridization

    Get PDF
We describe an approach to sort cells from coastal North Sea bacterioplankton by flow cytometry after in situ hybridization with rRNA-targeted horseradish peroxidase-labeled oligonucleotide probes and catalyzed fluorescent reporter deposition (CARD-FISH). In a sample from spring 2003 >90% of the cells were detected by CARD-FISH with a bacterial probe (EUB338). Approximately 30% of the microbial assemblage was affiliated with the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium lineage of the Bacteroidetes (CFB group) (probe CF319a), and almost 10% was targeted by a probe for the beta-proteobacteria (probe BET42a). A protocol was optimized to detach cells hybridized with EUB338, BET42a, and CF319a from membrane filters (recovery rate, 70%) and to sort the cells by flow cytometry. The purity of sorted cells was >95%. 16S rRNA gene clone libraries were constructed from hybridized and sorted cells (S-EUB, S-BET, and S-CF libraries) and from unhybridized and unsorted cells (UNHYB library). Sequences related to the CFB group were significantly more frequent in the S-CF library (66%) than in the UNHYB library (13%). No enrichment of beta-proteobacterial sequence types was found in the S-BET library, but novel sequences related to Nitrosospira were found exclusively in this library. These bacteria, together with members of marine clade OM43, represented >90% of the beta-proteobacteria in the water sample, as determined by CARD-FISH with specific probes. This illustrates that a combination of CARD-FISH and flow sorting might be a powerful approach to study the diversity and potentially the activity and the genomes of different bacterial populations in aquatic habitats
