    Calculations of the pressure distribution on axisymmetric boattails including effects of viscous interactions and exhaust jets in subsonic flow

    A method of calculating the pressure distributions on boattails is proposed. This method accounts for viscous effects including the presence of a separated region for base flows by combining an inviscid analysis with a boundary layer analysis in an iterative calculation. Details of the reversed flow region are not considered. Some preliminary results have been obtained for boattails at subsonic free stream Mach number with turbulent boundary layers separating at the boattail base. In some cases convergence could not be obtained using the present computer program. It is possible, in principle, to extend this method to the calculation of boattail flows with pressure gradient induced separation on the boattail

    Quantitative Validation of a Habitat Suitability Index for Oyster Restoration

    Habitat suitability index (HSI) models provide spatially explicit information on the capacity of a given habitat to support a species of interest, and their prevalence has increased dramatically in recent years. Despite caution that the reliability of HSIs must be validated using independent, quantitative data, most HSIs intended to inform terrestrial and marine species management remain unvalidated. Furthermore, of the eight HSI models developed for eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) restoration and fishery production, none has been validated. Consequently, we developed, calibrated, and validated an HSI for the eastern oyster to identify optimal habitat for restoration in a tributary of Chesapeake Bay, the Great Wicomico River (GWR). The GWR harbors a high density, restored oyster population, and therefore serves as an excellent model system for assessing the validity of the HSI. The HSI was derived from GIS layers of bottom type, salinity, and water depth (surrogate for dissolved oxygen), and was tested using live adult oyster density data from a survey of high vertical relief reefs (HRR) and low vertical relief reefs (LRR) in the sanctuary network. Live adult oyster density was a statistically-significant sigmoid function of the HSI, which validates the HSI as a robust predictor of suitable oyster reef habitat for rehabilitation or restoration. In addition, HRR had on average 103–116 more adults m−2 than LRR at a given level of the HSI. For HRR, HSI ≥ 0.3 exceeded the accepted restoration target of 50 live adult oysters m−2. For LRR, the HSI was generally able to predict live adult oyster densities that meet or exceed the target at HSI ≥ 0.3. The HSI indicated that there remain large areas of suitable habitat for restoration in the GWR. This study provides a robust framework for HSI model development and validation, which can be refined and applied to other systems and previously developed HSIs to improve the efficacy of native oyster restoration

    Symmetry breaking perturbations and strange attractors

    The asymmetrically forced, damped Duffing oscillator is introduced as a prototype model for analyzing the homoclinic tangle of symmetric dissipative systems with \textit{symmetry breaking} disturbances. Even a slight fixed asymmetry in the perturbation may cause a substantial change in the asymptotic behavior of the system, e.g. transitions from two sided to one sided strange attractors as the other parameters are varied. Moreover, slight asymmetries may cause substantial asymmetries in the relative size of the basins of attraction of the unforced nearly symmetric attracting regions. These changes seems to be associated with homoclinic bifurcations. Numerical evidence indicates that \textit{strange attractors} appear near curves corresponding to specific secondary homoclinic bifurcations. These curves are found using analytical perturbational tools

    Settlement indices for blue crab megalopae in the York River, Virginia: Temporal relationships and statistical efficiency

    The efficacy of artificial settlement substrates in quantifying relative rates of settlement of blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, postlarvae (megalopae) was examined. The technique has been widely used to assess settlement at local (Chesapeake Bay) and broad geographic scales (Atlantic and Gulf Coasts). This analysis examined differences in settlement between two configurations of substrates and two depths of deployment, in relation to lunar day, month, year and hours of flood tide occurring at night. Substrates were deployed daily for four years (1989-1992) during the settlement season (July-November) in the York River, Virginia. Settlement did not differ between substrate configurations (flat and cylindrical) deployed at the same location in the water column. Substrates deployed at the bottom of the water column had higher settlement than substrates at the surface, except during the last lunar month sampled (approximately November), when settlement was higher at the surface. There was a semilunar periodicity in settlement with high settlement following the new and full moon phases. Settlement varied annually and with lunar month. Statistical efficiency was achieved with a minimum of three or four replicate substrates. Cylindrical artificial settlement substrates are efficient, reliable and capable of detecting temporal patterns in settlement
