    An improved formulation of Jaccard's theory of the electric properties of ice

    In the standard derivation of Jaccard's theory of the electric properties of ice, no fundamental distinction is made between bound and free charges. This leads to some didactical problems like the ad hoc introduction of the so-called 'configuration vector' Ω\bf{\Omega}. However, when the two types of charges are distinguished, it becomes clear that Ω\bf{\Omega} is redundant and proportional to the polarisation density. We also show that Jaccard's formulation contains a wrong formula for the electric susceptibility and that the correct Φ\Phi factor can be derived from a straightforward kinetic approach (which Jaccard failed to do).Comment: Submission to SciPos

    Seasonal variation in soil and plant water potentials in a Bolivian tropical moist and dry forest

    We determined seasonal variation in soil matric potentials (¿soil) along a topographical gradient and with soil depth in a Bolivian tropical dry (1160 mm y-1 rain) and moist forest (1580 mm y-1). In each forest we analysed the effect of drought on predawn leaf water potentials (¿pd) and drought response (midday leaf water potential at a standardized ¿pd of -0.98 MPa; ¿md) of saplings of three tree species, varying in shade-tolerance and leaf phenology. ¿soil changed during the dry season and most extreme in the dry forest. Crests were drier than slopes and valleys. Dry-forest top soil was drier than deep soil in the dry season, the inverse was found in the wet season. In the moist forest the drought-deciduous species, Sweetia fruticosa, occupied dry sites. In the dry forest the short-lived pioneer, Solanum riparium, occupied wet sites and the shade-tolerant species, Acosmium cardenasii drier sites. Moist-forest species had similar drought response. The dry-forest pioneer showed a larger drought response than the other two species. Heterogeneity in soil water availability and interspecific differences in moisture requirements and drought response suggest great potential for niche differentiation.     Environmental changes during secondary succession in a tropical dry forest in Mexico

    Vegetation and environment change mutually during secondary succession, yet the idiosyncrasies of the vegetation effect on the understorey environment are poorly understood. To test whether the successional understorey environment changes predictably and is shaped by the structure and seasonality of tropical dry forests, we estimated basal area and vegetation cover, and measured understorey temperature, light and moisture conditions, in 17 plots forming a 60-y chronosequence and a mature forest. Light and air and soil temperature decreased with time (75-15% of open-sky radiation, 31.7-29.3 °C, and +2.5 °C to -0.5 °C relative to ambient, respectively), whereas relative humidity increased (67-74%). Soil water availability increased with early-successional development (-45 to -1 kPa) but decreased afterwards (to -18 kPa). The first axis of a PCA of the rainy-season environment explained 60% of the variation and was strongly related to air temperature and relative humidity. During tropical dry-forest succession, such factors may be more important than light, the reduction in which is not extreme compared with taller and more vertically stratified wet forests. Seasonality significantly affected the successional environmental gradients, which were marked mainly during the wet season. Environmental heterogeneity was higher in the wet than in the dry season, and larger for resources (light and water) than for conditions (temperature and humidity). The wet-season increase in environmental heterogeneity potentially creates differential growing scenarios; the environmental harshness of the dry season would mostly challenge seedling survival

    Screening interacting factors in a wireless network testbed using locating arrays

    Wireless systems exhibit a wide range of configurable parameters (factors), each with a number of values (levels), that may influence performance. Exhaustively analyzing all factor interactions is typically not feasible in experimental systems due to the large design space. We propose a method for determining which factors play a significant role in wireless network performance with multiple performance metrics (response variables). Such screening can be used to reduce the set of factors in subsequent experimental testing, whether for modelling or optimization. Our method accounts for pairwise interactions between the factors when deciding significance, because interactions play a significant role in real-world systems. We utilize locating arrays to design the experiment because they guarantee that each pairwise interaction impacts a distinct set of tests. We formulate the analysis as a problem in compressive sensing that we solve using a variation of orthogonal matching pursuit, together with statistical methods to determine which factors are significant. We evaluate the method using data collected from the w-iLab.t Zwijnaarde wireless network testbed and construct a new experiment based on the first analysis to validate the results. We find that the analysis exhibits robustness to noise and to missing data

    Approximately one million total hip replacement operations are performed worldwide annually, mostly for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. A major complication in total hip arthroplasties is loosening of the prosthesis leading to pain and walking difficulties and a higher risk for dislocations and pathological fractures.11 Within ten years of primary hip replacement 7-13 percent of patients need revision surgery due to loosening of the implant.16 The number of revision surgeries in elderly patients is likely to increase considerably in the next decades, due to the tendency to insert orthopaedic implants at younger ages and the longer life expectancy of patients. Revision surgery has a high complication rate in elderly patients1,20,23,25 and is associated with less improvement in social outcome, compared to primary hip arthroplasty in patients of all ages.24 Many studies have focused on the relatively good technical outcome of revision hip arthroplasty in patients of all ages. However, the impact on the patient__s life, especially in elderly patients has been underemphasised. This thesis was set up to develop and analyse an alternative treatment for hip prosthesis loosening.     Genetic diversity of Kenyan Prosopis populations based on random amplified polymorphic DNA markers

    Several Prosopis species and provenances were introduced in Kenya, either as a single event or repeatedly. To date, naturally established Prosopis populations are described as pure species depending on site, despite the aforementioned introduction of several species within some sites. To determine whether naturally established stands consist of a single or mixture of species, six populations from Bamburi, Bura, Isiolo, Marigat, Taveta and Turkwel were compared for relatedness with reference to Prosopis chilensis, Prosopis juliflora and Prosopis pallida using random amplified polymorphic DNA markers. Cluster analysis based on Nei’s genetic distance clustered Kenyan populations as follows: Marigat, Bura and Isiolo with P. juliflora, Bamburi with P. pallida and Taveta with P. chilensis, whereas the Turkwel population is likely to be a hybrid between P. chileneis and P. juliflora. Four populations had private markers, revealing germplasm uniqueness. Expected heterozygosity tended to be larger for Kenyan populations (ranging from 0.091 to 0.191) than in the three reference (ranging from 0.065 to 0.144). For the six Kenyan populations and two P. juliflora provenances from the Middle East, molecular variation was larger within populations than between population. Higher molecular variance among populations is attributed to their geographical separation and the low variation within populations is due to gene flow between individuals within a population. Overall, this study shows that (1) the Kenyan Prosopis populations are genetically isolated, (2) multiple introductions enhanced genetic diversity within sites and (3) P. juliflora and its hybrid are the most aggressive invaders.Key words: Prosopis chilensis, Prosopis juliflora, Prosopis pallida, multiple introductions, genetic diversity
