    We employ a turbulence transport theory to the radial evolution of the solar wind at both low and high latitudes. The theory includes cross helicity, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, and driving by shear and pickup ions. The radial decrease of cross helicity, observed in both low and high latitudes, can be accounted for by including sufficient shear driving to overcome the tendency of MHD turbulence to produce Alfvénic states. The shear driving is weaker at high latitudes leading to a slower evolution. Model results are compared with observations from Ulysses and Voyager

    A visual programming model to implement coarse-grained DSP applications on parallel and heterogeneous clusters

    International audienceThe digital signal processing (DSP) applications are one of the biggest consumers of computing. They process a big data volume which is represented with a high accuracy. They use complex algorithms, and must satisfy a time constraints in most of cases. In the other hand, it's necessary today to use parallel and heterogeneous architectures in order to speedup the processing, where the best examples are the su-percomputers "Tianhe-2" and "Titan" from the top500 ranking. These architectures could contain several connected nodes, where each node includes a number of generalist processor (multi-core) and a number of accelerators (many-core) to finally allows several levels of parallelism. However, for DSP programmers, it's still complicated to exploit all these parallelism levels to reach good performance for their applications. They have to design their implementation to take advantage of all heteroge-neous computing units, taking into account the architecture specifici-ties of each of them: communication model, memory management, data management, jobs scheduling and synchronization . . . etc. In the present work, we characterize DSP applications, and based on their distinctive-ness, we propose a high level visual programming model and an execution model in order to drop down their implementations and in the same time make desirable performances

    Human-Centered Design Components in Spiral Model to Improve Mobility of Older Adults

    As humans grow older, their cognitive needs change more frequently due to distal and proximal life events. Designers and developers need to come up with better designs that integrate older users’ needs in a short period of time with more interaction with the users. Therefore, the positioning of human end users in the center of the design itself is not the key to the success of design artifacts while designing applications for older adults to use a smartphone as a promising tool for journey planner while using public transportation. This study analyzed the use of human-centered design (HCD) components, the spiral model, and the design for failure (DfF) approach to improve the interactions between older users and designers/developers in gathering usability needs in the concept stage and during the development of the app with short iterative cycles. To illustrate the importance of the applied approach, a case study with particular focus on older adults is presented.The results presented in this study are based on “Assistant” project funded by AAL JP, co-funded by the European Union.     Ileal immune tonus is a prognosis marker of proximal colon cancer in mice and patients

    Ileal epithelial cell apoptosis and the local microbiota modulate the effects of oxaliplatin against proximal colon cancer by modulating tumor immunosurveillance. Here, we identified an ileal immune profile associated with the prognosis of colon cancer and responses to chemotherapy. The whole immune ileal transcriptome was upregulated in poor-prognosis patients with proximal colon cancer, while the colonic immunity of healthy and neoplastic areas was downregulated (except for the Th17 fingerprint) in such patients. Similar observations were made across experimental models of implanted and spontaneous murine colon cancer, showing a relationship between carcinogenesis and ileal inflammation. Conversely, oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy could restore a favorable, attenuated ileal immune fingerprint in responders. These results suggest that chemotherapy inversely shapes the immune profile of the ileum-tumor axis, influencing clinical outcome

    Enzymatically crosslinked Tyramine-Gellan gum hydrogels as drug delivery system for rheumatoid arthritis treatment

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by joint synovial inflammation, as well as cartilage and bone tissue destruction. Current strategies for the treatment of RA can reduce joint inflammation, but the treatment options still represent stability concerns since they are not sufficient and present a fast clearing. Thus, several drug delivery systems (DDS) have been advanced to tackle this limitation. Injectable gellan gum (GG) hydrogels, reduced by physical crosslinking methods, also being proposed as DDS, but this kind of crosslinking can produce hydrogels that become weaker in physiological conditions. Nevertheless, enzymatic crosslinking emerged as an alternative to increase mechanical strength, which can be adjusted by the degree of enzymatic crosslinking. In this study, tyramine-modified gellan gum (Ty-GG) hydrogels were developed via horseradish peroxidase (HRP) crosslinking; and betamethasone was encapsulated within, to increase the specificity and safety in the treatment of patients with RA. Physicochemical results showed that it was possible to modify GG with tyramine, with a degree of substitution of approximately 30%. They showed high mechanical strength and resistance, presenting a controlled betamethasone release profile over time. Ty-GG hydrogels also exhibited no cytotoxic effects and do not negatively affected the metabolic activity and proliferation of chondrogenic primary cells. Furthermore, the main goal was achieved since betamethasone-loaded Ty-GG hydrogels demonstrated to have a more effective therapeutic effect when compared with the administration of betamethasone alone. Therefore, the developed Ty-GG hydrogels represent a promising DDS and a reliable alternative to traditional treatments in patients with RANorte2020 project (“NORTE-08-5369-FSE-000044”), REMIX project (G.A. 778078 — REMIX — H2020-MSCA-RISE-2017), and Gilson Lab, Chonbuk National University, Republic of Korea.     Alginate-nanohydroxyapatite hydrogel system: Optimizing the formulation for enhanced bone regeneration

    Ceramic/polymer-based biocomposites have emerged as potential biomaterials to fill, replace, repair or regenerate injured or diseased bone, due to their outstanding features in terms of biocompatibility, bioactivity, injectability, and biodegradability. However, these properties can be dependent on the amount of ceramic component present in the polymer-based composite. Therefore, in the present study, the influence of nanohydroxyapatite content (30 to 70 wt%) on alginate-based hydrogels was studied in order to evaluate the best formulation for maximizing bone tissue regeneration. The composite system was characterized in terms of physic-chemical properties and biological response, with in vitro cytocompatibility assessment with human osteoblastic cells and ex vivo functional evaluation in embryonic chick segmental bone defects. The main morphological characteristics of the alginate network were not affected by the addition of nanohydroxyapatite. However, physic-chemical features, like water-swelling rate, stability at extreme pH values, apatite formation, and Ca2+ release were nanoHA dose-dependent. Within in vitro cytocompatibility assays it was observed that hydrogels with nanoHA 30% content enhanced osteoblastic cells proliferation and expression of osteogenic transcription factors, while those with higher concentrations (50 and 70%) decreased the osteogenic cell response. Ex vivo data underlined the in vitro findings, revealing an enhanced collagenous deposition, trabecular bone formation and matrix mineralization with Alg-nanoHA30 composition, while compositions with higher nanoHA content induced a diminished bone tissue response.
