    Simultaneous Determination of Nitrite and Nitrate in Milk Samples by Ion Chromatography Method and Estimation of Dietary Intake

    The presence of nitrate and nitrite in foods may be considered hazardous after ingestion in the gastrointestinal tract due to their reaction with naturally occurred secondary amines to form potentially carcinogenic nitrosamines. Due to this fact, a new method was developed in this study for the simultaneous determination of nitrite and nitrate in milk samples using by ion chromatography. Proposed mobile phase composed of sodium hydrogen carbonate and sodium carbonate (1.0 and 3.2 mmol/L) with a flow rate of 0.7 ml/min. The average recoveries for nitrate and nitrite were higher than 86 and 88, respectively. The limit of detection for nitrate and nitrite were 0.24 and 0.09 mg/L, respectively. The results of 102 real milk samples showed nitrate was found in all of the samples (100) with a mean of 34 ± 11 mg/L, while nitrite was found in none of the samples. The mean intake of nitrate in all age groups was lower than World Health Organization guideline. The present assessment concludes that the maximum contaminant level was equal to 82.8 mg/L nitrate. This method was fast, sensitive and accurate and is capable of being an alternative method in food control laboratories for investigation of nitrite and nitrate content. This is the first study of the determination and survey of nitrite and nitrate and exposure assessment of the Iranian population to nitrite and nitrate level in milk, which was widely used in infants and adolescents as one of the basic food components.     Revealing signatures of planets migrating in protoplanetary discs with ALMA multi-wavelength observations

    Recent observations show that rings and gaps are ubiquitous in protoplanetary discs. These features are often interpreted as being due to the presence of planets; however, the effect of planetary migration on the observed morphology has not been investigated hitherto. In this work we investigate whether multiwavelength mm/submm observations can detect signatures of planet migration, using 2D dusty hydrodynamic simulations to model the structures generated by migrating planets and synthesising ALMA continuum observations at 0.85 and 3 mm. We identify three possible morphologies for a migrating planet: a slowly migrating planet is associated with a single ring outside the planet's orbit, a rapidly migrating planet is associated with a single ring inside the planet's orbit while a planet migrating at intermediate speed generates one ring on each side of the planet's orbit. We argue that multiwavelength data can distinguish multiple rings produced by a migrating planet from other scenarios for creating multiple rings, such as multiple planets or discs with low viscosity. The signature of migration is that the outer ring has a lower spectral index, due to larger dust grains being trapped there. Of the recent ALMA observations revealing protoplanetary discs with multiple rings and gaps, we suggest that Elias 24 is the best candidate for a planet migrating in the intermediate speed regime.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Vasopressin attenuates ischemia-reperfusion injury via reduction of oxidative stress and inhibition of mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening in rat hearts

    Aim of this study was to investigate the involvement of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) and oxidative stress in the cardioprotective effect of vasopressin (AVP) on ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Anesthetized male wistar rats were subjected to regional 30 min ischemia and 120 min reperfusion and randomly divided into nine groups: (1) Control; saline was administered intravenously before ischemia, (2) vasopressin was administrated 10 min prior to ischemia, (3, 4) Atractyloside as MPTP opener, was injected 5 min prior to reperfusion without and with vasopressin, (5, 6) Cyclosporine A as a MPTP closer, was injected 5 min prior to reperfusion without and with vasopressin, (7) mitochondria were isolated from control group and CaCl2 was added as MPTP opener and swelling inducer, (8) isolated mitochondria from Control hearts was incubated with Cyclosporine A before adding the CaCl2 (9) CaCl2 was added to isolated mitochondria from vasopressin group. Infusion of vasopressin decreased infarct size (18.6±1.7% vs. control group 37.6±2.4%), biochemical parameters [LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase), CK-MB (Creatine Kinase-MB) and MDA (Malondialdehyde) plasma levels, PAB (Prooxidant-antioxidant balance)] compared to control group. Atactyloside suppressed the cardioprotective effect of vasopressin (32.5±1.9% vs. 18.6±1.7%) but administration of the Cyclosporine A without and with vasopressin significantly reduced infarct size to 17.7±4% (P<0.001) and 22.7±3% (P<0.01) respectively, vs. 37.6±2.4% in control group. Also, vasopressin, similar to Cyclosporine A, led to decrease in CaCl2-induced swelling. It seems that vasopressin through antioxidant effect and MPTP inhibition has created a cardioprotection against ischemia/reperfusion injuries. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Phase cascade lattice rectifier array: an exactly solvable nonlinear network circuit

    An exact analysis of a 2-D lattice network consisting of N × N sites with rectifier and AC source elements with controllable phases reveals a method for generating ripple-free DC power without the use of any filtering circuit elements. A phase cascade configuration is described in which the current ripple in a load resistor goes to zero in the large N limit, enhancing the rectification efficiency without requiring any additional capacitor or inductor based filters. The integrated modular configuration is qualitatively different from conventional rectenna arrays in which the source, rectifier and filter systems are physically disjoint. Nonlinear networks in the large N limit of source-rectifier arrays are potentially of interest to a fast evolving field of distributed power networks.MNacknowledges support from a Graduate Fellowship in the ECE department at Boston University.     Oil Displacement by Water in Hauterivian Sandstone Reservoir of Kashkari Oil Field

    This paper evaluates oil displacement by water in Hauterivian sandstone reservoir of Kashkari oil field in North of Afghanistan. The core samples of this oil field were taken out from well No-21st, and the relative permeability and fractional flow are analyzed. Steady state flow laboratory experiments are performed to empirically obtain the fractional flow curves and relative permeability in different water saturation ratio. The relative permeability represents the simultaneous flow behavior in the reservoir. The fractional flow approach describes the individual phases as fractional of the total flow. The fractional flow curve interprets oil displacement by water, and from the tangent of fractional flow curve can find out the average saturation behind the water front flow saturation. Therefore, relative permeability and fractional flow curves are suitable for describing the displacement of oil by water in a petroleum reservoir. The effects of irreducible water saturation, residual oil saturation on the displaceable amount of oil are investigated through Buckley-Leveret analysis

    The unique Wolverine HREE deposit, Browns Range area, Western Australia

    The Wolverine deposit is the largest of a number of REE ore bodies located in the Browns Range area of the Tanami region, Western Australia. These deposits collectively represent one of the worlds’ richest sources of dysprosium and other critical HREE. The Wolverine deposit consists of xenotime [(Y,REE)PO4] and minor florencite [(REEAl3(PO4)2(OH)6] mineralisation in hydrothermal lodes within massive arkosic sandstones. Small alkali granite and pegmatite bodies also intruded the sandstone in the region. Steeply dipping mineralisation is associated with silicification at major fault junctions, and occurs mostly as; 1) high grade, low tonnage lodes with large (>10m long and 1m wide) veins and chaotic breccias of massive, anhedral xenotime (±quartz, ±hematite, ±sericite), and; 2) low grade, probably higher tonnage disseminated mm-scale xenotime-quartz veins and crackle breccias in which xenotime grains occur in a number of morphological types, mainly blade-like and pyramidal overgrowth on pre-existing xenotime grains. U-Pb dating and isotopic analysis of detrital zircon grains from arkose samples from across the district yielded a single age population of ~3.1 (±~0.1) Ga (corrected for lead loss), which is interpreted to be the maximum depositional age of the sandstones. This age is significantly older than the granitic rocks in the region ( ca. 1.8 to 2.5 Ga), indicating that there is (previously unknown) Mesoarchean basement within the North Australian Craton. Highly unradiogenic Hf isotope data for these zircons combined with unradiogenic Nd isotope values for ore xenotime indicate that old (Early Archean or Hadean?) crustal components contributed to the formation of ~3.1 Ga basement rocks and potentially the xenotime ore bodies. Work is ongoing to understand the temporal evolution of the deposit, the source of the REE (i.e., mantle versus old crustal) and the processes of transport and precipitation of HREE to form the deposit

    Compressive strength of tungsten mine waste- and metakaolinbased geopolymers

    Neuro-fuzzy approach has been successfully applied to a wide range of civil engineering problems so far. However, this is limited for geopolymeric specimens. In the present study, compressive strength of different types of geopolymers has been modeled by adaptive neuro-fuzzy interfacial systems (ANFIS). The model was constructed by 395 experimental data collected from the literature and divided into 80% and 20% for training and testing phases, respectively. Curing time, Ca(OH)2 content, NaOH concentration, mold type, aluminosilicate source and H2O/Na2O molar ratio were independent input parameters in the proposed model. Absolute fraction of variance, absolute percentage error and root mean square error of 0.94, 11.52 and 14.48, respectively in training phase and 0.92, 15.89 and 23.69, respectively in testing phase of the model were achieved showing the relatively high accuracy of the proposed ANFIS model. By the obtained results, a comparative study was performed to show the interaction of some selected factors on the compressive strength of the considered geopolymers. The discussions findings were in accordance to the experimental studies and those results presented in the literature

    Seroprevalence of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 infection (HTLV1) in different patients in the north of Iran

    Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV1) is a lymphotropic virus which can contribute to carcinogenesis in adult T-cell leukemia, myleopathy and other disorders. 20 million people are affected by this virus in the world. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of human T-cell lymph tropic virus type 1 infection in patients referred to Emam’s hospital laboratory in Sari. A cross-sectional study was done in 2009 to 2010 based on the different patients that were referred to Emam`s hospital laboratory in Sari. Our samples were selected by simple random selection, after venous blood sample was centrifuged and reserved in -70°C. All the samples were tested by enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA). An ELISA positive result was checked by Western blot (WB) assays. Out of 1200 cases, 776 were female (65%) with ages between 1 and 76 years old. Most of the cases were Mazandaranian (99%); although only one person was recorded as HTLV1 positive (0.08%). He was a 41 years old man, living in Sari, with high school education. He was married (one wife) without any risk factor in past medical history, such as surgery, transfusion and abuse of injection, but he had HBV infection. Most of the females were housewives and most of the males were non-governmental employees; moreover, diabetes was more common among them. The results of the samples show that 122 women were pregnant, 92 cases had transfusion and 642 cases had different surgery. It was observed that the incidence of HTLV1 infection was very rare in the north of Iran (Sari); therefore, the routine HTLV1 screening was not recommended.Key words: Seroprevalence, human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV1), patients, Iran
