    Response to actual and simulated recordings of conventional takeoff and landing jet aircraft

    Comparability between noise characteristics of synthesized recordings of aircraft in flight and actual recordings were investigated. Although the synthesized recordings were more smoothly time-varying than the actual recordings and the synthesizer could not produce a comb-filter effect that was present in the actual recordings, results supported the conclusion that annoyance response is comparable to the synthesized and actual recordings. A correction for duration markedly improved the validity of engineering calculation procedures designed to measure noise annoyance. Results led to the conclusion that the magnitude estimation psychophysical method was a highly reliable approach for evaluating engineering calculation procedures designed to measure noise annoyance. For repeated presentations of pairs of actual recordings, differences between judgment results for identical signals ranged from 0.0 to 0.5 db

    Predictors of LARC Use in High School Adolescent Females in the UnitedStates

    Teen pregnancy is a major public health problem in the United States of America. Among many contraceptive methods, long acting reversible contraception (LARC) is popular and effective. However, there was no adequate research study performed to show if minority teenagers are less likely to use LARC. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between adolescent sexual behavior and activity and the use of LARC in females, ages 14 to 19, in high schools across the United States. The theoretical framework used for this study was the health belief model. The study population was 1,496 White, Black/African American, and Hispanic/Latino adolescent females, ages 14 to 19 years, who attended public and private schools in the United States and who participated in the 2017 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey. A univariate analysis was performed to describe study sample demographic characteristics. A bivariate analysis was conducted to determine whether there was any association between the independent variables and the dependent variable. Finally, a binary logistic regression was conducted to find an association between race and LARC usage. No statistically significant relationship between race and LARC usage was found. However, there was a statistically significant relationship between LARC usage and multiple sex partners. Multiple sex partners were the only significant predictor of LARC usage; for each additional sex partner, the log-odds of someone not using LARC decreased by 0.23 units (OR: 0.77; 95% CI: 0.69 – 0.87). The more sexual partners increased, the odds of LARC usage decreased. This study can contribute to positive social change by providing a framework to inform health providers with better counseling practices and strategies to engage sexually active African American and Hispanic females about LARC methods

    A study of general aviation community noise impact and annoyance

    The method involved the selection of three airports which were dominated by aircraft weighing 12,500 lbs or under and which were also undergoing a change relative to utilization. Also, there was interest in airports with different utilization levels so that effect of number of operations could be considered. In addition, there was a requirement to select airports with communities in the surrounding areas which were exposed to aircraft operations noise. Noise annoyance response data was obtained from available sources. These sources included environmental impact statements, interviews with airport managers, noise complaint information, community meetings concerned with projected changes in airport utilization, and social survey data. As a means of objectively assessing the noise impact due to aircraft operations, noise measurement and computer noise modeling determinations were obtained for each airport. Therefore, those taking HRT should usually be evaluated after 1 year of treatment if bleeding continues. (Grade of recommendation: C, based on case series.) Evaluation of this bleeding should begin with a pelvic examination and Papanicolaou (Pap) test (if not done in the previous 12 months), then transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS), followed by endometrial biopsy or hysteroscopy, if indicated.     Genetic Parameters for Lean Growth Rate and Its Components in U.S. Landrace Pigs

    Records on 65,536 Landrace pigs collected between 1985 and 1999 in herds on the National Swine Registry STAGES program were used to estimate additive genetic (animal), common environmental (litter), and residual variances and covariances for days to 250 lb, backfat, loin eye area, and lean growth rate. Analysis was by the REMLf90 program of I. Misztal using a multiple-trait animal model with fixed effects of contemporary group and sex and random effects of animal, litter, and residual error. Heritability estimates were 0.54, 0.39, 0.49, and 0.48 for days to 250 lb, backfat, loin eye area, and lean growth rate, respectively. Genetic correlations for lean growth rate with days to 250, backfat, and loin eye area were -0.83, -0.38, and 0.40, respectively. Phenotypic correlations for lean growth rate with days to 250 lb, backfat, and loin eye area were -0.80, -0.40, and 0.56, respectively. Litter effects were large only for days to 250 lb. Lean growth rate should be used as an important selection criteria in genetic improvement in pigs
