On the recombination in high-order harmonic generation in molecules
We show that the dependence of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) on the
molecular orientation can be understood within a theoretical treatment that
does not involve the strong field of the laser. The results for H_2 show
excellent agreement with time-dependent strong field calculations for model
molecules, and this motivates a prediction for the orientation dependence of
HHG from the N_2 3s_g valence orbital. For both molecules, we find that the
polarization of recombination photons is influenced by the molecular
orientation. The variations are particularly pronounced for the N_2 valence
orbital, which can be explained by the presence of atomic p-orbitals.Comment: 6 pages 7 figure
Applications of Magnetic PsiDO Techniques to Space-adiabatic Perturbation Theory
In this review, we show how advances in the theory of magnetic
pseudodifferential operators (magnetic DO) can be put to good use in
space-adiabatic perturbation theory (SAPT). As a particular example, we extend
results of [PST03] to a more general class of magnetic fields: we consider a
single particle moving in a periodic potential which is subjectd to a weak and
slowly-varying electromagnetic field. In addition to the semiclassical
parameter \eps \ll 1 which quantifies the separation of spatial scales, we
explore the influence of additional parameters that allow us to selectively
switch off the magnetic field.
We find that even in the case of magnetic fields with components in
, e. g. for constant magnetic fields, the results of
Panati, Spohn and Teufel hold, i.e. to each isolated family of Bloch bands,
there exists an associated almost invariant subspace of and an
effective hamiltonian which generates the dynamics within this almost invariant
subspace. In case of an isolated non-degenerate Bloch band, the full quantum
dynamics can be approximated by the hamiltonian flow associated to the
semiclassical equations of motion found in [PST03].Comment: 32 page

Magnitude of behavioral deficits varies with job-related chlorpyrifos exposure levels among Egyptian pesticide workers.
Chronic occupational exposure to organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) is consistently associated with deficits on behavioral tests when compared to unexposed comparison groups. However, a dose-response relationship has yet to be established, leading some to doubt an association between occupational OP exposure and behavioral deficits. Pesticide application teams in Egypt who are primarily exposed to one OP, chlorpyrifos (CPF), were recruited into a field assessment. Trail Making A and the more challenging Trail Making B tests were administered to 54 engineers (who supervise the pesticide application process, usually from the side of the field), 59 technicians (who guide the pesticide applicators in the field), 31 applicators (who mix and apply pesticides using knapsack sprayers), and 150 controls (who did not work in the fields) at two different times during the OP application season as well as immediately after applications had ended and 1.5 months later. All participants were males since only males work on pesticide application teams in Egypt. Urinary levels of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), a specific metabolite of CPF, confirmed the pattern of lower to higher CPF exposures from engineers to technicians to applicators, and these were all greater than urinary metabolite levels in controls. A consistent relationship between job title and performance speed on the behavioral task was observed: Controls had the best (fastest) performance on Trail Making A and B tests throughout the application season, and applicators had significantly slower performance than engineers on Trail Making A (p = 0.015) and B (p = 0.003). However, individual urinary TCPy, blood acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) levels did not predict individual performance. This study identifies a dose-related effect based on job title, which serves as a surrogate for chronic exposure in that differing job titles exhibit varying group exposure levels. The results establish that chronic occupational exposure to chlorpyrifos is neurotoxic and suggest that the classic biomarkers of recent CPF exposure are not predictive of chronic exposure effects
Semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization
We present a semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization that
accounts for path interferences of tunnel-ionized electrons in the ionic
potential beyond perturbation theory. Within the framework of a classical
trajectory Monte-Carlo representation of the phase-space dynamics, the model
employs the semiclassical approximation to the phase of the full quantum
propagator in the exit channel. By comparison with the exact numerical solution
of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for strong-field ionization of
hydrogen, we show that for suitable choices of the momentum distribution after
the first tunneling step, the model yields good quantitative agreement with the
full quantum simulation. The two-dimensional photoelectron momentum
distributions, the energy spectra, and the angular distributions are found to
be in good agreement with the corresponding quantum results. Specifically, the
model quantitatively reproduces the fan-like interference patterns in the
low-energy part of the two-dimensional momentum distributions as well as the
modulations in the photoelectron angular distributions.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figure
Pair-distribution functions of the two-dimensional electron gas
Based on its known exact properties and a new set of extensive fixed-node
reptation quantum Monte Carlo simulations (both with and without backflow
correlations, which in this case turn out to yield negligible improvements), we
propose a new analytical representation of (i) the spin-summed
pair-distribution function and (ii) the spin-resolved potential energy of the
ideal two-dimensional interacting electron gas for a wide range of electron
densities and spin polarization, plus (iii) the spin-resolved pair-distribution
function of the unpolarized gas. These formulae provide an accurate reference
for quantities previously not available in analytic form, and may be relevant
to semiconductor heterostructures, metal-insulator transitions and quantum dots
both directly, in terms of phase diagram and spin susceptibility, and
indirectly, as key ingredients for the construction of new two-dimensional spin

Nucleic acid binding agents exert local toxic effects on neurites via a non-nuclear mechanism
The mechanism by which drugs that target nucleic acids cause neurotoxicity is not well described. We characterized the neurotoxicity of Hoechst 33342 (bis-benzimide), a common cell permeable nuclear dye, in primary neuronal cultures. The mechanism of cell death was not apoptotic, as death is rapid, not accompanied by typical nuclear morphological changes, and is insensitive to inhibitors of transcription, translation and caspase activity. In addition, free-radical scavenging agents failed to attenuate cell death, and damage was not accompanied by mitochondrial dysfunction. Neuronal processes of cells exposed to Hoechst 33342 display dramatic fragmentation prior to cell death. When this compound was applied selectively to the distal axons of sympathetic neurons grown in compartmented cultures, the distal axons were destroyed. However, the proximal processes present in the cell body compartment were spared, demonstrating direct axonal toxicity rather than a remote effect of nuclear dysfunction. Other cell-permeable nucleic acid binding dyes similarly caused rapid dendritic and axonal toxicity. The hypothesis that these nucleic acid binding dyes target RNA localized to dendrites and axons is supported by observations that RNase V1 induced similar, rapid neurite fragmentation. Organophosphorus Pesticides Decrease M2 Muscarinic Receptor Function in Guinea Pig Airway Nerves via Indirect Mechanisms
BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies link organophosphorus pesticide (OP) exposures to asthma, and we have shown that the OPs chlorpyrifos, diazinon and parathion cause airway hyperreactivity in guinea pigs 24 hr after a single subcutaneous injection. OP-induced airway hyperreactivity involves M2 muscarinic receptor dysfunction on airway nerves independent of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition, but how OPs inhibit neuronal M2 receptors in airways is not known. In the central nervous system, OPs interact directly with neurons to alter muscarinic receptor function or expression; therefore, in this study we tested whether the OP parathion or its oxon metabolite, paraoxon, might decrease M2 receptor function on peripheral neurons via similar direct mechanisms. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Intravenous administration of paraoxon, but not parathion, caused acute frequency-dependent potentiation of vagally-induced bronchoconstriction and increased electrical field stimulation (EFS)-induced contractions in isolated trachea independent of AChE inhibition. However, paraoxon had no effect on vagally-induced bradycardia in intact guinea pigs or EFS-induced contractions in isolated ileum, suggesting mechanisms other than pharmacologic antagonism of M2 receptors. Paraoxon did not alter M2 receptor expression in cultured cells at the mRNA or protein level as determined by quantitative RT-PCR and radio-ligand binding assays, respectively. Additionally, a biotin-labeled fluorophosphonate, which was used as a probe to identify molecular targets phosphorylated by OPs, did not phosphorylate proteins in guinea pig cardiac membranes that were recognized by M2 receptor antibodies. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These data indicate that neither direct pharmacologic antagonism nor downregulated expression of M2 receptors contributes to OP inhibition of M2 function in airway nerves, adding to the growing evidence of non-cholinergic mechanisms of OP neurotoxicity
Metabolism of profenofos to 4-bromo-2-chlorophenol, a specific and sensitive exposure biomarker.
Profenofos is a direct acting phosphorothioate organophosphorus (OP) pesticide capable of inhibiting β-esterases such as acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, and carboxylesterase. Profenofos is known to be detoxified to the biologically inactive metabolite, 4-bromo-2-chlorophenol (BCP); however, limited data are available regarding the use of urinary BCP as an exposure biomarker in humans. A pilot study conducted in Egyptian agriculture workers, demonstrated that urinary BCP levels prior to application (3.3-30.0 μg/g creatinine) were elevated to 34.5-3,566 μg/g creatinine during the time workers were applying profenofos to cotton fields. Subsequently, the in vitro enzymatic formation of BCP was examined using pooled human liver microsomes and recombinant human cytochrome P-450s (CYPs) incubated with profenofos. Of the nine human CYPs studied, only CYPs 3A4, 2B6, and 2C19 were able to metabolize profenofos to BCP. Kinetic studies indicated that CYP 2C19 has the lowest Km, 0.516 μM followed by 2B6 (Km=1.02 μM) and 3A4 (Km=18.9μM). The Vmax for BCP formation was 47.9, 25.1, and 19.2 nmol/min/nmol CYP for CYP2B6, 2C19, and 3A4, respectively. Intrinsic clearance (Vmax/Km) values of 48.8, 46.9, and 1.02 ml/min/nmol CYP 2C19, 2B6, and 3A4, respectively, indicate that CYP2C19 and CYP2B6 are primarily responsible for the detoxification of profenofos. These findings support the use of urinary BCP as a biomarker of exposure to profenofos in humans and suggest polymorphisms in CYP 2C19 and CYP 2B6 as potential biomarkers of susceptibility

Forty participants were recruited from a voluntary sector domestic abuse service, commissioned by an outer London local authority in the UK. The measurement tools used were the Intimate Partner Violence Strategies Index and the CAADA Domestic Abuse, Stalking and ‘Honour’-Based Violence (DASH) Risk Assessment Checklist. The average age was 33 (SD=7.9, range: 20-57), half reported to be of Asian ethnicity, 37.5% White and 12.5% Black or Mixed ethnicity. The average DASH score was 9.8 (SD=13.2, range: 0-18) and an average of 18 (SD=6.7, range: 1-29) protective strategies were utilised by each participant. All of the most commonly used strategies were from the Placating category. Though Safety Planning strategies were rated as the most helpful by all participants, Placating strategies were also rated as helpful by two-thirds of participants. Stepwise multiple regression showed that Placating was the only significant predictor of DASH score (β=0.375, p<0.05) and accounted for 14% of the variance of DASH score. Findings showed that women utilized a diverse range of protective strategies with placating strategies being most intensely used and rated as helpful. However, placating strategy usage could be a risk factor as opposed to a protective factor. This study has also demonstrated that greater placating strategies were used by White than South Asian women, and women who were employed used more formal strategies. This research has extended the knowledge base of protective strategies that professionals can draw from to underpin decisions and interventions when working with domestic abuse survivors.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
