    Price Drops, Fluctuations, and Correlation in a Multi-Agent Model of Stock Markets

    In this paper we compare market price fluctuations with the response to fundamental price drops within the Lux-Marchesi model which is able to reproduce the most important stylized facts of real market data. Major differences can be observed between the decay of spontaneous fluctuations and of changes due to external perturbations reflecting the absence of detailed balance, i.e., of the validity of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem.     Comparison of The Kois Dento-Facial Analyzer System with an Earbow for Mounting a Maxillary Cast

    Statement of problem: The Kois Dento-Facial Analyzer System (KDFA) is used by clinicians to mount maxillary casts and evaluate and treat patients. Limited information is available for understanding whether the KDFA should be considered as an alternative to an earbow. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate maxillary casts mounted using the KDFA with casts mounted using Panadent\u27s Pana-Mount Facebow (PMF). Both articulation methods were compared against a lateral cephalometric radiograph. Material and methods: Fifteen dried human skulls were used. Lateral cephalometric radiographs and 2 maxillary impressions were made of each skull. One cast from each skull was mounted on an articulator by means of the KDFA and the other by using the PMF. A standardized photograph of each articulation was made, and the distance from the articular center to the incisal edge position and the occlusal plane angle were measured. The distance from condylar center to the incisal edge and the occlusal plane angle were measured from cephalometric radiographs. Finally, the 3-dimensional position of each articulation was determined with a Panadent CPI-III. A randomized complete block design analysis of variance (RCBD) and post hoc tests (Tukey-Kramer HSD) (α=.05) were used to evaluate the occlusal plane angle and axis-central incisor distance. A paired 2-sample t test for means (α=.05) was used to compare the X, Y, and Z distance at the right and left condyle. Results: The KDFA and PMF mounted the maxillary cast in a position that was not statistically different from the skull when comparing the occlusal plane angle (P=.165). Both the KDFA and the PMF located the maxillary central incisor edge position in a significantly different position compared with the skull (P=.001) but were not significantly different from each other. The 3-dimensional location of the maxillary casts varied at the condyles by approximately 9 to 10.3 mm. Conclusion: The KDFA mounted the maxillary cast in a position that was not statistically different from the PMF when comparing the incisal edge position and the occlusal plane angle. Both the KDFA and the PMF located the maxillary incisal edge position in a significantly different position compared with the anatomic position on dried human skulls

    TiB_2 and ZrB_2 diffusion barriers in GaAs Ohmic contact technology

    The transition metal diboride compounds, ZrB_2 and TiB_2, interposed between Ni/Ge/Au Ohmic contact metallization on n‐type GaAs wafers and an overlying thick Au contact layer, have been investigated to evaluate their effectiveness in stabilizing the Ohmic contact by limiting the in‐diffusion of Au. All of the metal layers were e‐beam deposited except the ZrB_2 which was rf‐diode sputtered. The barrier layer thicknesses were 50 and 100 nm for the TiB_2 and the ZrB_2, respectively. Postdeposition alloying of the contacts was performed at 400, 425, or 450 °C. Auger electron spectroscopy depth profiling of the resultant Ohmic contacts demonstrates that the barrier layers effectively preclude penetration of Au to the Ohmic contact structure. Specific contact resistivities for such contacts are in the low 10^(−7) Ω cm^2 range; although some degradation of the contact resistivity is observed after long term annealing, the values of resistivities do not exceed 1.5×10^(−6) Ω cm^2 after 92 h at 350 °C

    The exhibition which combines sculpture and photography and a lithograph was curated by Simonetta Lux and Stella Santacatterina. The lithograph, H.I.S.T.O.R.Y M.A.T.T.E.R.S, sited in the museums’s entrance, has now become a permanent exhibit at the MLAC Museum in Rome. The installation ‘From life ‘ drew on political images from her personal archive of newspaper cuttings and her research into oral history during a study visit to the International Marionette Museum, Sicily. 'From life' derived from research into the temporality of space using the conventions and language of theatre, such as lighting, audience, stage, scenery. Selected newspaper images of significant political events were distilled into a single gesture and re-enacted by a model whose cast legs revealed the tension of the original moment.     Drag reductions obtained by modifying a box-shaped ground vehicle

    A box-shaped ground vehicle was used to simulate the aerodynamic drag of high volume transports, that is, delivery vans, trucks, or motor homes. The coast-down technique was used to define the drag of the original vehicle, having all square corners, and several modifications of the vehicle. Test velocities ranged up to 65 miles per hour, which provided maximum Reynolds numbers of 1 times 10 to the 7th power based on vehicle length. One combination of modifications produced a reduction in aerodynamic drag of 61 percent as compared with the original square-cornered vehicle

    To determine if undergraduate student information desk assistants were effectively staffing the library\u27s chat reference service, librarians at Bowling Green State University embarked on a chat transcript analysis project, comparing the performance of librarians to student assistants. Although student desk assistants generally did not perform as well as librarians, it was concluded that with a renewed emphasis on continual oversight and training, students were a very viable option for staffing a chat reference service

    Despite a general decline in recent years in academic libraries’ reference desk statistics, research indicates that library users continue to have complex research questions but are largely unaware that librarians are waiting and ready to assist them. The challenge for librarians is to connect with users at their point of need. At Bowling Green State University, we are making a move in this direction with proactive (pop-up) chat widgets embedded within our library Web pages, catalog, and databases. Since implementation, the number of chat reference questions received has more than doubled, helping us reach additional users from on-and off-campus

    Genome-wide phylogenetic analysis of the pathogenic potential of Vibrio furnissii

Available from Frontiers Media via the DOI in this record.We recently reported the genome sequence of a free-living strain of Vibrio furnissii (NCTC 11218) harvested from an estuarine environment. V. furnissii is a widespread, free-living proteobacterium and emerging pathogen that can cause acute gastroenteritis in humans and lethal zoonoses in aquatic invertebrates, including farmed crustaceans and molluscs. Here we present the analyses to assess the potential pathogenic impact of V. furnissii. We compared the complete genome of V. furnissii with 8 other emerging and pathogenic Vibrio species. We selected and analyzed more deeply 10 genomic regions based upon unique or common features, and used 3 of these regions to construct a phylogenetic tree. Thus, we positioned V. furnissii more accurately than before and revealed a closer relationship between V. furnissii and V. cholerae than previously thought. However, V. furnissii lacks several important features normally associated with virulence in the human pathogens V. cholera and V. vulnificus. A striking feature of the V. furnissii genome is the hugely increased Super Integron, compared to the other Vibrio. Analyses of predicted genomic islands resulted in the discovery of a protein sequence that is present only in Vibrio associated with diseases in aquatic animals. We also discovered evidence of high levels horizontal gene transfer in V. furnissii. V. furnissii seems therefore to have a dynamic and fluid genome that could quickly adapt to environmental perturbation or increase its pathogenicity. Taken together, these analyses confirm the potential of V. furnissii as an emerging marine and possible human pathogen, especially in the developing, tropical, coastal regions that are most at risk from climate change.This research was funded by a grant from Shell Research Ltd
