    Improved targeted outdoor advertising based on geotagged social media data

    With as many as 4 million passenger journeys within the London Underground system every weekday, the advertisement spaces across the stations hold considerable potential. However, the planning of specific advertisements across time and space is difficult to optimize as little is known about passers-by. Therefore, in order to generate detailed and quantifiable spatio-temporal information which is particular to each station area, we have explored local social media data. This research demonstrates how local interests can be mined from geotagged Tweets by using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, an unsupervised topic modelling method. The relative popularity of each of the key topics is then explored spatially and temporally between the station areas. Overall, this research demonstrates the value of using Geographical Information System and text-mining techniques to generate valuable spatio-temporal information on popular interests from Twitter data

    Using linked consumer registers to estimate residential moves in the United Kingdom

    This paper argues that frequently updated data on the nature of residential moves and the circumstances of movers in the United Kingdom are insufficient for many research purposes. Accordingly, we develop previous research reported in this Journal to re-purpose consumer and administrative data in order to develop annual estimates of residential mobility between all UK neighbourhoods. We use a unique digital corpus of linked individual and household-level consumer registers compiled by the UK Consumer Data Research Centre, comprising over 143 million unique address records pertaining to the entire UK adult population over the period 1997–2016. We describe how records pertaining to individuals vacating a property can be assigned to their most probable residential destination, based on novel methods of matching names, assessing household composition, and using information on the date and probable distance of residential moves. We believe that the results of this analysis contribute highly granular, frequently updated estimates of residential moves that can be used to chart population-wide outcomes of residential mobility and migration behaviour, as well as the socio-spatial characteristics of the sedentary population

    Bacterial Infection Elicits Heat Shock Protein 72 Release from Pleural Mesothelial Cells

    Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) has been implicated in infection-related processes and has been found in body fluids during infection. This study aimed to determine whether pleural mesothelial cells release HSP70 in response to bacterial infection in vitro and in mouse models of serosal infection. In addition, the in vitro cytokine effects of the HSP70 isoform, Hsp72, on mesothelial cells were examined. Further, Hsp72 was measured in human pleural effusions and levels compared between non-infectious and infectious patients to determine the diagnostic accuracy of pleural fluid Hsp72 compared to traditional pleural fluid parameters. We showed that mesothelial release of Hsp72 was significantly raised when cells were treated with live and heat-killed Streptococcus pneumoniae. In mice, intraperitoneal injection of S. pneumoniae stimulated a 2-fold increase in Hsp72 levels in peritoneal lavage (p<0.01). Extracellular Hsp72 did not induce or inhibit mediator release from cultured mesothelial cells. Hsp72 levels were significantly higher in effusions of infectious origin compared to non-infectious effusions (p<0.05). The data establish that pleural mesothelial cells can release Hsp72 in response to bacterial infection and levels are raised in infectious pleural effusions. The biological role of HSP70 in pleural infection warrants exploration

    Subarachnoid haemorrhage guidelines and clinical practice: a cross-sectional study of emergency department consultants' and neurospecialists' views and risk tolerances

    OBJECTIVES: To establish if emergency medicine and neuroscience specialist consultants have different risk tolerances for investigation of suspected spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), and to establish if their risk-benefit appraisals concur with current guidelines. SETTING: 4 major neuroscience centres in London. PARTICIPANTS: 58 consultants in emergency medicine and neuroscience specialities (neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology) participated in an anonymous survey. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome measure was the highest stated acceptable risk of missing SAH in the neurologically intact patient presenting with sudden onset headache. Secondary outcome measures included agreement with guideline recommendations, risk/benefit appraisal and required performance of diagnostic tests, including lumbar puncture. RESULTS: Emergency department clinicians accepted almost 3 times the risk of a missed SAH diagnosis compared with the neuroscience specialists (2.8% vs 1.1%; p=0.02), were more likely to accept a higher risk of missed diagnosis for the benefit of a non-invasive test (p=0.04) and were more likely to disagree with current published guidelines stipulating the need for LP in all CT-negative cases (p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Divergence from recognised procedures for SAH investigation is often criticised and attributed to a lack of knowledge of guidelines. This study indicates that divergence from guidelines may be explained by alternative risk-benefit appraisals made by doctors with their patients. Guideline recommendations may gain wider acceptance if they accommodate the requirements of the doctors and patients using them. Further study of clinical risk tolerance may help explain patterns of diagnostic test use and other variations in healthcare delivery

    Challenges to representing the population from new forms of consumer data

    A large share of human activity is now routinely captured and stored by commercial organisations as consumer data. These new forms of data have provided many new and exciting opportunities for understanding population trends at fine spatial scales. In many settings, they have reduced our dependence on theory and traditional modelling approaches and fundamentally changed how geographers approach producing representations of the population. However, consumer data are typically created for commercial benefit and do not have academic standard data quality controls, and so, in repurposing the data for social research, we encounter inherent issues of veracity. Without an understanding of uncertainty, social scientists can risk overstretching consumer datasets beyond the specific populations or phenomena they directly pertain to. Moreover, the technical characteristics of large and complex datasets also make it challenging to generate valid information efficiently. Therefore, this paper reviews the major challenges to harnessing consumer data to produce valid spatial representations of the population at large

    This paper describes the steps involved to prepare the largest ever quantitative analysis of the distribution of surnames in Great Britain. We describe the method to estimate approximately 1.2 million surname distributions using Kernel Density Estimates (KDEs) for seven years of historic census data and twenty years of contemporary Consumer Registers. We argue that these surname distributions could offer valuable insight into processes of contagious and hierarchical diffusion of populations as well as the regional distinctiveness of demographic change and stasis

    Geocoding historical census records in England and Wales

    This paper describes efforts to geo-reference addresses from the 1901 Census of Population of England and Wales by linking them to the contemporary OS AddressBase. The results indicate that it is feasible to standardise and geocode a large share of unique addresses from the historic database. Roughly 38% of addresses from 1901 could be linked to contemporary address coordinates. A further 25% of records could be allocated to a road. Geographic trends in the proportion of properties that could be matched were then explored to reveal fascinating insights about how housing has changed since 1901

    Design, Implementation and First Measurements with the Medipix Neutron Camera in CMS

    The Medipix detector is the first device dedicated to measuring mixed-field radiation in the CMS cavern and able to distinguish between different particle types. Medipix2-MXR chips bump bonded to silicon sensors with various neutron conversion layers developed by the IEAP CTU in Prague were successfully installed for the 2008 LHC start-up in the CMS experimental and services caverns to measure the flux of various particle types, in particular neutrons. They have operated almost continuously during the 2010 run period, and the results shown here are from the proton run between the beginning of July and the end of October 2010. Clear signals are seen and different particle types have been observed during regular LHC luminosity running, and an agreement in the measured flux rate is found with the simulations. These initial results are promising, and indicate that these devices have the potential for further and future LHC and high energy physics applications as radiation monitoring devices for mixed field environments, including neutron flux monitoring. Further extensions are foreseen in the near future to increase the performance of the detector and its coverage for monitoring in CMS.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, submitted to JINS

In this era of growth, much of the research literature is primarily sourced from academics with little contribution from applied and industry stakeholders. As such, the editors have sought to offer practitioners a platform to share novel projects, perspectives and preliminary intervention evaluation findings. This applied article intends to share evaluation and insight from applied practice, to encourage closer debate between the academic community and applied industry
