    Calculation of some determinants using the s-shifted factorial

    Several determinants with gamma functions as elements are evaluated. This kind of determinants are encountered in the computation of the probability density of the determinant of random matrices. The s-shifted factorial is defined as a generalization for non-negative integers of the power function, the rising factorial (or Pochammer's symbol) and the falling factorial. It is a special case of polynomial sequence of the binomial type studied in combinatorics theory. In terms of the gamma function, an extension is defined for negative integers and even complex values. Properties, mainly composition laws and binomial formulae, are given. They are used to evaluate families of generalized Vandermonde determinants with s-shifted factorials as elements, instead of power functions.Comment: 25 pages; added section 5 for some examples of application

    Partial order and a T0T_0-topology in a set of finite quantum systems

    A `whole-part' theory is developed for a set of finite quantum systems Σ(n)\Sigma (n) with variables in Z(n){\mathbb Z}(n). The partial order `subsystem' is defined, by embedding various attributes of the system Σ(m)\Sigma (m) (quantum states, density matrices, etc) into their counterparts in the supersystem Σ(n)\Sigma (n) (for mnm|n). The compatibility of these embeddings is studied. The concept of ubiquity is introduced for quantities which fit with this structure. It is shown that various entropic quantities are ubiquitous. The sets of various quantities become T0T_0-topological spaces with the divisor topology, which encapsulates fundamental physical properties. These sets can be converted into directed-complete partial orders (dcpo), by adding `top elements'. The continuity of various maps among these sets is studied

    Thank You, Come Again: Examining the Role of Quality and Trust on eCommerce Repurchase Intentions

    As the pertinence of online consumer shopping continues to grow, more and more e-retailers are erecting websites. In this increasingly competitive environment, building customer loyalty and retaining customers is integral to achieving sustained profitability. While one stream of literature has suggested that e-retailers should concentrate on improving quality, another stream has recommended that the focus should be on building trust with customers. This paper represents an early, working attempt to synthesize these parallel streams, investigating how the interplay between three forms of quality (information, system, and service) and trust help to retain customers. Integrating information systems and marketing research, the results of this paper suggest that trust mediates the relationship between each type of quality and both satisfaction and repurchase intentions. Furthermore, of the three types of quality that are examined, service quality engenders the greatest impact on trust, followed by information quality then system quality. The paper concludes with a discussion of this preliminary model as well as directions for the future development of this project

    Fast-slow asymptotic for semi-analytical ignition criteria in FitzHugh-Nagumo system

    We study the problem of initiation of excitation waves in the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. Our approach follows earlier works and is based on the idea of approximating the boundary between basins of attraction of propagating waves and of the resting state as the stable manifold of a critical solution. Here, we obtain analytical expressions for the essential ingredients of the theory by singular perturbation using two small parameters, the separation of time scales of the activator and inhibitor, and the threshold in the activator's kinetics.     Decoy Effects in Choice Experiments and Contingent Valuation: Asymmetric Dominance

    While a dominated choice involves a situation in which one option clearly dominates another on all relevant dimensions, an asymmetrically dominated choice typically arises where at least two options do not dominate each other and one (but not both) of those options does dominate a third option. We demonstrate that the introduction of such an asymmetrically dominated option can have a significant impact upon choices between non-dominated options within the same choice set for non-market goods.     They Call for Help, But Don\u27t Always Listen: The Development of the User-Help Desk Knowledge Application Model

    The IS help desk function plays a central role in boundary spanning knowledge exchanges within organizations. Help desk employees provide technical support to users in an effort to transfer knowledge and enable users to autonomously apply this knowledge in the future. However, despite their importance, little is known about the factors that affect knowledge application within this context. Adopting interpersonal influence theory, this paper develops a model that examines how dimensions of source credibility - expertise, trustworthiness, and attractiveness impact users’ knowledge application in a help desk environment. The model is tested using a sample of working adults at a large Midwestern hospital who had significant experience requesting help from an IS help desk. Results indicate that all three dimensions of source credibility predict users’ ability to apply the knowledge transferred from a help desk employee. The implications of these results are discussed
