    Self-Sustainable Key Generation: Strategies and Performance Bounds under DoS Attacks

    Denial-of-Service (DoS) threats pose a major challenge to the idea of physical-layer key generation as the underlying wireless channels for key extraction are usually public. Identifying this vulnerability, we study the effect of DoS threats on relay-assisted key generation, and show that a reactive jamming attack on the distribution phase of relay-assisted key generation can forbid the nodes from extracting secret keys. To circumvent this problem, we propose a self-sustainable key generation model, wherein a frequency-hopping based distribution phase is employed to evade the jamming attack even though the participating nodes do not share prior credentials. A salient feature of the idea is to carve out a few bits from the key generation phase and subsequently use them to pick a frequency band at random for the broadcast phase. Interesting resource-allocation problems are formulated on how to extract maximum number of secret bits while also being able to evade the jamming attack with high probability. Tractable low-complexity solutions are also provided to the resource-allocation problems, along with insights on the feasibility of their implementation in practice.Comment: 7 page

    Current Understanding of Extracellular Vesicle Homing/Tropism

    Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-enclosed packets that are released from cells and subsequently transfer bioactive molecules between cells without directly contacting the target cells. This transfer of molecules can activate consequential processes in recipient cells, including cell differentiation and migration, thus maintaining tissue homeostasis or promoting tissue pathology. A controversial but therapeutically promising aspect of EV biology is their ability to engage defined cells at specific sites. On the one hand, persuasive studies have shown that EVs express surface molecules that ensure EV tissue localization and enable cell-specific interactions, as demonstrated by in vitro and in vivo analyses. This feature of EV biology is being investigated in translational studies to control malignancies, and deliver chemicals and bioactive molecules to combat several diseases. On the other hand, several studies have shown that EVs fail to traffic in hosts in a targeted manner, thus calling the potential roles of EVs as vehicles in drug delivery and cell-free biomodulation into question. In this review, the biology of EV homing/tropism in mammalian hosts is discussed, including the biological characteristics that may explain the controversial aspects of the EV tropism

    MVCSLAM: Mono-Vision Corner SLAM for Autonomous Micro-Helicopters in GPS Denied Environments

    We present a real-time vision navigation and ranging method (VINAR) for the purpose of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) using monocular vision. Our navigation strategy assumes a GPS denied unknown environment, whose indoor architecture is represented via corner based feature points obtained through a monocular camera. We experiment on a case study mission of vision based SLAM through a conventional maze of corridors in a large building with an autonomous Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV). We propose a method for gathering useful landmarks from a monocular camera for SLAM use. We make use of the corners by exploiting the architectural features of the manmade indoors

    Automated LULC Map Production using Deep Neural Networks

    Preprint version.This article presents an approach to automating the creation of land-use/land-cover classification (LULC) maps from satellite images using deep neural networks that were developed to perform semantic segmentation of natural images. This work is important since the production of accurate and timely LULC maps is becoming essential to government and private companies that rely on them for large-scale monitoring of land resource changes. In this work, deep neural networks are trained to classify each pixel of a satellite image into one of a number of LULC classes. The presented deep neural networks are all pre-trained using the ImageNet Large-Scale Visual Recognition Competition (ILSVRC) datasets and then fine-tuned using approximately 19,000 Landsat 5/7 satellite images of resolution 224×224 taken of the Province of Manitoba in Canada. The result is an automated solution that can produce LULC maps images significantly faster than current semi-automated methods. The contributions of this article are the observation that deep neural networks developed for semantic segmentation can be used to automate the task of producing LULC maps; the use of these networks to produce LULC maps; and a comparison of several popular semantic segmentation architectures for solving the problem of automated LULC map production."This work was funded by a research contract with GeoManitoba, which is a department in the Manitoba provincial government.     Estimation of Steam Turbine Shafts Fatigue Damage Caused by Torsional Vibrations

    В Україні 74 енергоблоки потужністю 150-800 МВт теплових електростанцій із 102 перебувають на межі перевищення паркового ресурсу (220 тис. Годин). З них 17 енергоблоків наближаються до кінця ресурсу парку, а 11 енергоблоків досягли передбачуваного ресурсу (100 тис. Годин). Статистика аварій на електростанціях у різних країнах показує, що більшість з них спричинені тривалим накопиченням збитків від втоми. Серед основних причин пошкодження втоми - пульсація високотемпературних потоків пари в циліндрах турбіни, поперечні та крутильні коливання валів при тривалій експлуатації тощо. Це обумовлює розробку обчислювальних та експериментальних методів визначення втомних пошкоджень вали турбінних установок при динамічних навантаженнях. Оцінка втомних пошкоджень вала парової турбіни К-200-130 базується на 3D-моделі кінцевих елементів. Розрахунки враховують експериментально визначені втомні властивості роторної сталі. Розраховано втомну пошкодження в результаті крутильних коливань валу турбіни, спричинених аномальною роботою турбінного генератора. Зони концентрації напружень в обертових елементах парової турбіни типу К-200-130 встановлені для різних режимів роботи. Запропоновано процедуру прогнозування впливу втоми від пошкоджень на розрахунковий ресурс турбінного агрегату.In Ukraine, 74 power units with a capacity of 150-800 MW of thermal power plants out of 102 are on the verge of exceeding the park resource (220 thousand hours). Of these, 17 power units are close to the end the park resource, and 11 units have reached their estimated resource (100 thousand hours). Statistics of power plants accidents in different countries indicates that most of them are caused by the long term accumulation of fatigue damage. Among the main causes of fatigue damage are the pulsating of high-temperature steam flows in the turbine cylinders, transverse and torsional vibrations of shafts during long-term operation etc. This causes the development of computational and experimental methods for the determination of fatigue damage of turbine units’ shafts under dynamic loads. The evaluation of fatigue damage of steam turbine K-200-130 shaft is based on the 3D finite element model. The calculations take into account experimentally determined fatigue properties of rotor steel. The fatigue damage as a result of torsional vibrations of turbine shaft caused by the abnormal operation of turbine generator is calculated. Zones of stress concentration in the rotating elements of the steam turbine type K-200-130 are established for various operating modes.     Fusion between Leishmania amazonensis and Leishmania major Parasitophorous Vacuoles: Live Imaging of Coinfected Macrophages

    Protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania alternate between flagellated, elongated extracellular promastigotes found in insect vectors, and round-shaped amastigotes enclosed in phagolysosome-like Parasitophorous Vacuoles (PVs) of infected mammalian host cells. Leishmania amazonensis amastigotes occupy large PVs which may contain many parasites; in contrast, single amastigotes of Leishmania major lodge in small, tight PVs, which undergo fission as parasites divide. To determine if PVs of these Leishmania species can fuse with each other, mouse macrophages in culture were infected with non-fluorescent L. amazonensis amastigotes and, 48 h later, superinfected with fluorescent L. major amastigotes or promastigotes. Fusion was investigated by time-lapse image acquisition of living cells and inferred from the colocalization of parasites of the two species in the same PVs. Survival, multiplication and differentiation of parasites that did or did not share the same vacuoles were also investigated. Fusion of PVs containing L. amazonensis and L. major amastigotes was not found. However, PVs containing L. major promastigotes did fuse with pre-established L. amazonensis PVs. In these chimeric vacuoles, L. major promastigotes remained motile and multiplied, but did not differentiate into amastigotes. In contrast, in doubly infected cells, within their own, unfused PVs metacyclic-enriched L. major promastigotes, but not log phase promastigotes - which were destroyed - differentiated into proliferating amastigotes. The results indicate that PVs, presumably customized by L. major amastigotes or promastigotes, differ in their ability to fuse with L. amazonensis PVs. Additionally, a species-specific PV was required for L. major destruction or differentiation – a requirement for which mechanisms remain unknown. The observations reported in this paper should be useful in further studies of the interactions between PVs to different species of Leishmania parasites, and of the mechanisms involved in the recognition and fusion of PVs

    Identification of Leishmania Proteins Preferentially Released in Infected Cells Using Change Mediated Antigen Technology (CMAT)

    Although Leishmania parasites have been shown to modulate their host cell's responses to multiple stimuli, there is limited evidence that parasite molecules are released into infected cells. In this study, we present an implementation of the change mediated antigen technology (CMAT) to identify parasite molecules that are preferentially expressed in infected cells. Sera from mice immunized with cell lysates prepared from L. donovani or L. pifanoi-infected macrophages were adsorbed with lysates of axenically grown amastigotes of L. donovani or L. pifanoi, respectively, as well as uninfected macrophages. The sera were then used to screen inducible parasite expression libraries constructed with genomic DNA. Eleven clones from the L. pifanoi and the L. donovani screen were selected to evaluate the characteristics of the molecules identified by this approach. The CMAT screen identified genes whose homologs encode molecules with unknown function as well as genes that had previously been shown to be preferentially expressed in the amastigote form of the parasite. In addition a variant of Tryparedoxin peroxidase that is preferentially expressed within infected cells was identified. Antisera that were then raised to recombinant products of the clones were used to validate that the endogenous molecules are preferentially expressed in infected cells. Evaluation of the distribution of the endogenous molecules in infected cells showed that some of these molecules are secreted into parasitophorous vacuoles (PVs) and that they then traffic out of PVs in vesicles with distinct morphologies. This study is a proof of concept study that the CMAT approach can be applied to identify putative Leishmania parasite effectors molecules that are preferentially expressed in infected cells. In addition we provide evidence that Leishmania molecules traffic out of the PV into the host cell cytosol and nucleus

    The use of complementary and alternative medicine by 7427 Australian women with cyclic perimenstrual pain and discomfort: A cross-sectional study

Background: To assess the prevalence of cyclic perimenstrual pain and discomfort and to detail the pattern of complementary and alternative (CAM) use adopted by women for the treatment of these symptoms. Methods: Data from the 2012 national Australian Longitudinal Study of Women's Health (ALSWH) cross-sectional survey of 7427 women aged 34-39 years were analysed to estimate the prevalence of endometriosis, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), irregular or heavy periods and severe dysmenorrhoea and to examine the association between their symptoms and their visits to CAM practitioners as well as their use of CAM therapies and products in the previous 12 months. Results: The prevalence of endometriosis was 3.7 % and of the perimenstrual symptoms assessed, PMS was most prevalent at 41.2 % whilst irregular bleeding (22.2 %), heavy periods (29.8 %) and severe period pain (24.1 %) were reported at lower levels. Women with endometriosis were more likely than non-sufferers to have consulted with a massage therapist or acupuncturist and to have used vitamins/minerals, yoga/meditation or Chinese medicines (p < 0.05). PMS sufferers were more likely to consult with an osteopath, massage therapist, naturopath/herbalist or alternative health practitioner and to have used all forms of CAM therapies except Chinese medicines than women who had infrequent PMS (all p < 0.05). Women with irregular periods did not have different patterns of CAM use from non-sufferers and those with heavy periods did not favour any form of CAM but were less likely to visit a massage therapist or use yoga/meditation than non-sufferers (p < 0.05). For women with severe dysmenorrhoea there was no difference in their visits to CAM practitioners compared to non-sufferers but they were more likely to use aromatherapy oils (p < 0.05) and for more frequent dysmenorrhoea also herbal medicines, Chinese medicines and other alternative therapies compared to non-sufferers (all p < 0.05). Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of cyclic perimenstrual pain and discomfort amongst women in this age group. Women were using CAM differentially when they had specific symptoms of cyclic perimenstrual pain and discomfort. The use of CAM needs to be properly assessed to ensure their safe, effective use and to ascertain their significance as a treatment option enabling women with menstrual problems and their care providers to improve their quality of life
