Granular Avalanches in Fluids
Three regimes of granular avalanches in fluids are put in light depending on
the Stokes number St which prescribes the relative importance of grain inertia
and fluid viscous effects, and on the grain/fluid density ratio r. In gas (r >>
1 and St > 1, e.g., the dry case), the amplitude and time duration of
avalanches do not depend on any fluid effect. In liquids (r ~ 1), for
decreasing St, the amplitude decreases and the time duration increases,
exploring an inertial regime and a viscous regime. These regimes are described
by the analysis of the elementary motion of one grain
Changes in Floquet state structure at avoided crossings: delocalization and harmonic generation
Avoided crossings are common in the quasienergy spectra of strongly driven
nonlinear quantum wells. In this paper we examine the sinusoidally driven
particle in a square potential well to show that avoided crossings can alter
the structure of Floquet states in this system. Two types of avoided crossings
are identified: on type leads only to temporary changes (as a function of
driving field strength) in Floquet state structure while the second type can
lead to permanent delocalization of the Floquet states. Radiation spectra from
these latter states show significant increase in high harmonic generation as

On the Influence of Pulse Shapes on Ionization Probability
We investigate analytical expressions for the upper and lower bounds for the
ionization probability through ultra-intense shortly pulsed laser radiation. We
take several different pulse shapes into account, including in particular those
with a smooth adiabatic turn-on and turn-off. For all situations for which our
bounds are applicable we do not find any evidence for bound-state

FXYD2 and Na,K-ATPase Expression in Isolated Human Proximal Tubular Cells: Disturbed Upregulation on Renal Hypomagnesemia?
Autosomal dominant renal hypomagnesemia (OMIM 154020), associated with hypocalciuria, has been linked to a 121G to A mutation in the FXYD2 gene. To gain insight into the molecular mechanisms linking this mutation to the clinical phenotype, we studied isolated proximal tubular cells from urine of a patient and a healthy subject. Cells were immortalized and used to assess the effects of hypertonicity-induced overexpression of FXYD2 on amount, activity and apparent affinities for Na+, K+ and ATP of Na,K-ATPase. Both cell lines expressed mRNA for FXYD2a and FXYD2b, and patient cells contained both the wild-type and mutated codons. FXYD2 protein expression was lower in patient cells and could be increased in both cell lines upon culturing in hyperosmotic medium but to a lesser extent in patient cells. Similarly, hyperosmotic culturing increased Na,K-ATPase protein expression and ATP hydrolyzing activity but, again, to a lesser extent in patient cells. Apparent affinities of Na,K-ATPase for Na+, K+ and ATP did not differ between patient and control cells or after hyperosmotic induction. We conclude that human proximal tubular cells respond to a hyperosmotic challenge with an increase in FXYD2 and Na,K-ATPase protein expression, though to a smaller absolute extent in patient cells

Transiting exoplanets from the CoRoT space mission. XV. CoRoT-15b: a brown dwarf transiting companion
We report the discovery by the CoRoT space mission of a transiting brown
dwarf orbiting a F7V star with an orbital period of 3.06 days. CoRoT-15b has a
radius of 1.12 +0.30 -0.15 Rjup, a mass of 63.3 +- 4.1 Mjup, and is thus the
second transiting companion lying in the theoretical mass domain of brown
dwarfs. CoRoT-15b is either very young or inflated compared to standard
evolution models, a situation similar to that of M-dwarfs stars orbiting close
to solar-type stars. Spectroscopic constraints and an analysis of the
lightcurve favors a spin period between 2.9 and 3.1 days for the central star,
compatible with a double-synchronisation of the system.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted in A&
