Innovation and entrepreneurship in Malaysian mobile-phone-applications industry: implications for technology intelligence

    Get PDF
The integration of technology intelligence within an innovation process can significantly contribute to the recognition, development, and exploitation of new business opportunities. In this study, we examined the innovation and entrepreneurship process within small firms in the Malaysian mobile-phone applications industry. The Malaysian mobile-phone industry presents huge opportunities to new businesses, yet its development is hindered by the highly monopolistic telecommunication industry structure and by Malaysia's largely underdeveloped supportive business contexts. It was found that product ideas originated from founders' own perceptive ability and/or interactions with industry experts, and they involved rigorous technology intelligence efforts

Nerve growth factor signaling through p75 induces apoptosis in Schwann cells via a Bcl-2-independent pathway

Apoptosis is involved in the regulation of Schwann cell numbers during normal development and after axonal damage, but the molecular regulation of Schwann cell death remains unknown. We have used stably transfected rat Schwann cell lines to study the potential roles of nerve growth factor (NGF), the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 and the cytokine response modifier A (CrmA) in modulating Schwann cell death in vitro. Bcl-2 inhibited Schwann cell apoptosis induced by survival factor withdrawal, whereas CrmA did not. In contrast, Bcl-2-transfected Schwann cells were susceptible to apoptosis in response to exogenous NGF, whereas CrmA-expressing cell lines were resistant. Demonstration of high levels of the low-affinity neurotrophin receptor p75 but not the high-affinity TrkA receptor on the Bcl-2-transfected cell lines suggested that the NGF-induced killing was mediated by p75. This was confirmed by resistance of Schwann cells isolated from p75 knockout mice to the NGF-induced cell death. Nerve growth factor also promoted the death of wild-type mouse and rat Schwann cells in the absence of survival factor withdrawal. Endogenous Bcl-2 mRNA was expressed by wild-type Schwann cells in all conditions that promoted survival but was downregulated to undetectable levels after survival factor withdrawal. In conclusion, our results demonstrate the existence of two separate pathways that expedite apoptosis in Schwann cells: a Bcl-2-blockable pathway initiated on loss of trophic support, and a Bcl-2-independent, CrmA-blockable pathway mediated via the p75 receptor

Soliton-like Spin State in the A-like Phase of 3He in Anisotropic Aerogel

We have found a new stable spin state in the A-like phase of superfluid 3He confined to intrinsically anisotropic aerogel. The state can be formed by radiofrequency excitation applied while cooling through the superfluid transition temperature and its NMR properties are different from the standard A-like phase obtained in the limit of very small excitation. It is possible that this new state is formed by textural domain walls pinned by aerogel.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to J. of Low Tem. Phys. (QFS2007 Proceedings

Universal Behaviour of the Superfluid Fraction and Tc of He-3 in 99.5% Open Aerogel

We have investigated the superfluid transition of He-3 in a 99.5% porosity silica aerogel. This very dilute sample shows behaviour intermediary between bulk He-3 and He-3 confined to the denser aerogels previously studied. We present data on both the superfluid transition temperature and the superfluid density and compare our results with previous measurements. Finally, we show that the suppression of the superfluid transition temperature and suppression of the superfluid density of He-3 in aerogel follow a universal relation for a range of aerogel samples.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures; 1 new figure, minor change

Olive phenology as a sensitive indicator of future climatic warming in the Mediterranean

Experimental and modelling work suggests a strong dependence of olive flowering date on spring temperatures. Since airborne pollen concentrations reflect the flowering phenology of olive populations within a radius of 50 km, they may be a sensitive regional indicator of climatic warming. We assessed this potential sensitivity with phenology models fitted to flowering dates inferred from maximum airborne pollen data. Of four models tested, a thermal time model gave the best fit for Montpellier, France, and was the most effective at the regional scale, providing reasonable predictions for 10 sites in the western Mediterranean. This model was forced with replicated future temperature simulations for the western Mediterranean from a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model (GCM). The GCM temperatures rose by 4·5 °C between 1990 and 2099 with a 1% per year increase in greenhouse gases, and modelled flowering date advanced at a rate of 6·2 d per °C. The results indicated that this long-term regional trend in phenology might be statistically significant as early as 2030, but with marked spatial variation in magnitude, with the calculated flowering date between the 1990s and 2030s advancing by 3–23 d. Future monitoring of airborne olive pollen may therefore provide an early biological indicator of climatic warming in the Mediterranean

Evolution of the Velocity Ellipsoids in the Thin Disk of the Galaxy and the Radial Migration of Stars

Data from the revised Geneva--Copenhagen catalog are used to study the influence of radial migration of stars on the age dependences of parameters of the velocity ellipsoids for nearby stars in the thin disk of the Galaxy, assuming that the mean radii of the stellar orbits remain constant. It is demonstrated that precisely the radial migration of stars, together with the negative metallicity gradient in the thin disk, are responsible for the observed negative correlation between the metallicities and angular momenta of nearby stars, while the angular momenta of stars that were born at the same Galactocentric distances do not depend on either age or metallicity. A national crowdsourcing-based tick collection campaign was organized in 2015 with the objective of producing novel data on tick distribution and tick-borne pathogens in Finland. Nearly 20 000 Ixodes ticks were collected. The collected material revealed the nationwide distribution of I. persulcatus for the first time and a shift northwards in the distribution of I. ricinus in Finland. A subset of 2038 tick samples containing both species was screened for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (the prevalence was 14.2% for I. ricinus and 19.8% for I. persulcatus), B. miyamotoi (0.2% and 0.4%, respectively) and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV; 0.2% and 3.0%, respectively). We also report new risk areas for TBEV in Finland and, for the first time, the presence of B. miyamotoi in ticks from mainland Finland. Most importantly, our study demonstrates the overwhelming power of citizen science in accomplishing a collection effort that would have been impossible with the scientific community alone.Peer reviewe

Relationship between the Velocity Ellipsoids of Galactic-Disk Stars and their Ages and Metallicities

The dependences of the velocity ellipsoids of F-G stars of the thin disk of the Galaxy on their ages and metallicities are analyzed based on the new version of the Geneva-Copenhagen Catalog. The age dependences of the major, middle, and minor axes of the ellipsoids, and also of the dispersion of the total residual veltocity, obey power laws with indices 0.25,0.29,0.32, and 0.27 (with uncertainties \pm 0.02). Due to the presence of thick-disk objects, the analogous indices for all nearby stars are about a factor of 1.5 larger. Attempts to explain such values are usually based on modeling relaxation processes in the Galactic disk. With increasing age, the velocity ellipsoid increases in size and becomes appreciably more spherical, turns toward the direction of the Galactic center, and loses angular momentum. The shape of the velocity ellipsoid remains far from equilibrium. With increasing metallicity, the velocity ellipsoid for stars of mixed age increases in size, displays a weak tendency to become more spherical, and turns toward the direction of the Galactic center (with these changes occurring substantially more rapidly in the transition through the metallicity [Fe/H]= -0.25). Thus, the ellipsoid changes similarly to the way it does with age; however, with decreasing metallicity, the rotational velocity about the Galactic center monotonically increases, rather than decreases(!). Moreover, the power-law indices for the age dependences of the axes depend on the metallicity, and display a maximum near [Fe/H]=-0.1. The age dependences of all the velocity-ellipsoid parameters for stars with equal metallicity are roughly the same. It is proposed that the appearance of a metallicity dependence of the velocity ellipsoids for thin-disk stars is most likely due to the radial migration of stars.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted 2009, Astronomy Reports, Vol. 53 No. 9, P.785-80

Start-up, growth and internationalisation of entrepreneurial ventures by the use of service families.

his article uses a single case study methodology that draws from the process-based life cycle models of (a) product development (b) product family development and (c) new venture development. It analyses e-Pay Asia's efforts to pioneer an electronic prepaid airtime reload delivery system and subsequently develop it into a comprehensive payment service family. This research resulted in the identification of close linkages between new services development and service family extension, especially as they regard internationalisation and new venture development. Both new service development/extension and internationalisation contributed to the development and rapid growth of the case company, thereby confirming the Uppsala model of internationalisation
