The impact of Chinese import penetration on the South African manufacturing sector
This article uses a Chenery-type decomposition and econometric estimation to evaluate the impact of Chinese trade on production and employment in South African manufacturing from 1992 to 2010. The results suggest that increased import penetration from China caused South African manufacturing output to be 5 per cent lower in 2010 than it otherwise would have been. The estimated reduction of total employment in manufacturing as a result of trade with China is larger – in 2010 about 8 per cent – because the declines in output were concentrated on labour-intensive industries and because the increase in imports raised labour productivity within industries
Nonclassical shallow water flows
This paper deals with violent discontinuities in shallow water flows with large Froude number .
On a horizontal base, the paradigm problem is that of the impact of two fluid layers in situations where the flow can be modelled as two smooth regions joined by a singularity in the flow field. Within the framework of shallow water theory we show that, over a certain timescale, this discontinuity may be described by a delta-shock, which is a weak solution of the underlying conservation laws in which the depth and mass and momentum fluxes have both delta function and step functioncomponents. We also make some conjectures about how this model evolves from the traditional model for jet impacts in which a spout is emitted.
For flows on a sloping base, we show that for flow with an aspect ratio of \emph{O}() on a base with an \emph{O(1)} or larger slope, the governing equations admit a new type of discontinuous solution that is also modelled as a delta-shock. The physical manifestation of this discontinuity is a small `tube' of fluid bounding the flow. The delta-shock conditions for this flow are derived and solved for a point source on an inclined plane. This latter delta-shock framework also sheds light on the evolution of the layer impact on a horizontal base
A study of low energy particles in cosmic rays
A large aperture, scintillation counter telescope capable of efficient mass discrimination against muons (and protons if desired) has been operated in a search for low energy (B 1.6 c in the cosmic rays at sea level. This limit refers to tachyons able to penetrate the spectrometer and deposit > l.8MeV in each scintillator
Parallel density matrix propagation in spin dynamics simulations
Several methods for density matrix propagation in distributed computing
environments, such as clusters and graphics processing units, are proposed and
evaluated. It is demonstrated that the large communication overhead associated
with each propagation step (two-sided multiplication of the density matrix by
an exponential propagator and its conjugate) may be avoided and the simulation
recast in a form that requires virtually no inter-thread communication. Good
scaling is demonstrated on a 128-core (16 nodes, 8 cores each) cluster.Comment: Submitted for publicatio
Flow instabilities in transonic small disturbance theory
The dynamics of unsteady transonic small disturbance flows about two-dimensional airfoils is examined, with emphasis on the behavior in the region where the steady state flow is nonunique. It is shown that nonuniqueness results from an extremely long time scale instability which occurs in a finite Mach number and angle of attack range. The similarity scaling rules for the instability are presented and the possibility of similar behavior in the Euler equations is discussed
Universal Scaling of the Chiral Condensate in Finite-Volume Gauge Theories
We confront exact analytical predictions for the finite-volume scaling of the
chiral condensate with data from quenched lattice gauge theory simulations.
Using staggered fermions in both the fundamental and adjoint representations,
and gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3), we are able to test simultaneously all of the
three chiral universality classes. With overlap fermions we also test the
predictions for gauge field sectors of non-zero topological charge. Excellent
agreement is found in most cases, and the deviations are understood in the
