    Suspended particulate matter in the Chesapeake Bay entrance and adjacent shelf waters

    Approximately 400 samples were collected from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay for various analyses, including 138 for suspended solids. Characteristics of suspended solids that were analyzed included: total suspended matter; total suspended inorganics, total suspended organics; percent organics; particle size distribution; and presence or absence of 11 of the most prominent particle types

    The Labeler as an Influence on Labeling Outcomes

    Focusing upon labeling processes at the level of interpersonal relations, this paper points out the general inattention to the labeler as an influence on labeling outcomes. In addition, recent empirical findings suggest not only that labeler variables may be associated with outcomes, but that different labelers are influenced in different ways by different factors in their interpersonal labeling. Consequently, an effort is made to incorporate knowledge from social perception theory into the labeling perspective in order to enhance our understanding of interpersonal labeling processes. Several labeler related variables which might be expected to influence labeling outcomes are suggested

    Instructional Coaching and Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices

    This classroom action research project compares the impact of instructional coaching with the focus on effective mathematics teaching strategies as outlined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in the text Principles to Action. Two 3rd grade classrooms were studied with one being a control classroom and the other whose teacher enrolled in a 6-week coaching cycle focusing on student centered goals around two effective mathematics teaching practices. Those effective mathematics teaching practices are posing purposeful questions and facilitating meaningful mathematics discourse. A pretest and posttest from FastBridge’s MCAP was used to determine the growth over the 6-week study period and were also compared to a control group in a classroom where the teacher chose not to enroll in a 6-week instructional coaching cycle. Data from this study indicated students in the class whose teacher participated in the coaching cycle around implementing effective mathematics teaching practices made more instructional gains as compared to the students in the class whose teacher did not participate in any professional development in mathematics instruction

    Effectiveness of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: A Systematic Qualitative Review of Controlled Outcome Studies

    Objective: We review all available controlled outcome studies of solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) to evaluate evidence of its effectiveness. Method: Forty-three studies were located and key data abstracted on problem, setting, SFBT intervention, design characteristics, and outcomes. Results: Thirty-two (74%) of the studies reported significant positive benefit from SFBT; 10 (23%) reported positive trends. The strongest evidence of effectiveness came in the treatment of depression in adults where four separate studies found SFBT to be comparable to well-established alternative treatments. Three studies examined length of treatment and all found SFBT used fewer sessions than alternative therapies. Conclusion: The studies reviewed provide strong evidence that SFBT is an effective treatment for a wide variety of behavioral and psychological outcomes and, in addition, it may be briefer and therefore less costly than alternative approaches

    Practicing mentorship: Graduate-student supervision of undergraduate research assistants

    Many research universities rely on graduate students to supervise undergraduate research assistants (RAs) who collect data and handle research logistics. This experience can be mutually beneficial, as RAs receive hands-on learning, and graduate students practice mentorship in preparation for assuming a faculty role. However, assistantships must be intentionally designed to meet educational (not just practical) goals. What training and support do graduate students receive to take on this mentorship role? In two surveys, RAs reported on their satisfaction, educational benefit, and desired changes; while graduate students reported on their goals, challenges, and the support they receive

    New early Eocene tapiromorph perissodactyls from the Ghazij Formation of Pakistan, with implications for mammalian biochronology in Asia

    Early Eocene mammals from Indo-Pakistan have only recently come under study. Here we describe the first tapiromorph perissodactyls from the subcontinent. Gandheralophus minor n. gen. and n. sp. and G. robustus n. sp. are two species of Isectolophidae differing in size and in reduction of the anterior dentition. Gandheralophus is probably derived from a primitive isectolophid such as Orientolophus hengdongensis from the earliest Eocene of China, and may be part of a South Asian lineage that also contains Karagalax from the middle Eocene of Pakistan. Two specimens are referred to a new, unnamed species of Lophialetidae. Finally, a highly diagnostic M3 and a molar fragment are described as the new eomoropid chalicothere Litolophus ghazijensis sp. nov. The perissodactyls described here, in contrast to most other mammalian groups published from the early Eocene of Indo-Pakistan, are most closely related to forms known from East and Central Asia. Tapiromorpha are diverse and biochronologically important in the Eocene there and our results allow the first biochronological correlation between early Eocene mammal faunas in Indo-Pakistan and the rest of Asia. We suggest that the upper Ghazij Formation of Pakistan is best correlated with the middle or late part of the Bumbanian Asian Land-Mammal Age, while the Kuldana and Subathu Formations of Pakistan and India are best correlated with the Arshantan Asian Land-Mammal Age

    Thermodynamic Stability of Sn4, Sn5, Sn6, and Sn7 Clusters by Knudsen Cell Mass Spectrometry

    The Knudsen cell mass spectrometric method has been employed to measure the partial pressures of Sn[sub n] (n=1-7) under equilibrium conditions above liquid tin or a tin-gold alloy, contained in a graphite Knudsen cell. From the all-gas analyzed equilibria the following atomization enthalpies Δ[sub a]H[sub 0][sup °](Sn[sub n]), and enthalpies of formation, Δ[sub f]H[sub 298.15][sup °](Sn[sub n]), in kJ mol-1, have been obtained: Sn[sub 4], 750.2±14 and 450.6±14; Sn[sub 5], 990.2±22 and 512.3±22; Sn[sub 6], 1349.7±28 and 452.8±28; Sn[sub 7], 1644.2±37 and 460.0±37. The atomization energies are compared with available theoretical values
