[Verse 1]Soon you will meet Folks on the street, And you’ll want to know the little tune They croon, I’m one who knows Just how it goes. I will sing that little thing that You’re missin’, Now, listen: [Chorus]Tee-ood-le-um-bum-bo That’s how it goes. Tee-ood-le-um-bum-bo The tune that grows More chummy and hummy ev’ry day: So snappy, each happy Man and miss’ll Learn to whistle Tee-ood-le-um-bum-bo And then you’ll see No matter where you go That tune will be. I’ll bet you it gets you When it becomes The tune that ev’rybody hums (hum) The tune that ev’rybody hums

    Solvothermal Synthesis of Ternary Sulfides of Sb2 − xBixS3(x = 0.4, 1) with 3D Flower-Like Architectures

Flower-like nanostructures of Sb2 − xBixS3(x = 0.4, 1.0) were successfully prepared using both antimony diethyldithiocarbamate [Sb(DDTC)3] and bismuth diethyldithiocarbamate [Bi(DDTC)3] as precursors under solvothermal conditions at 180 °C. The prepared Sb2 − xBixS3 with flower-like 3D architectures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The flower-like architectures, with an average diameter of ~4 μm, were composed of single-crystalline nanorods with orthorhombic structures. The optical absorption properties of the Sb2 − xBixS3 nanostructures were investigated by UV–Visible spectroscopy, and the results indicate that the Sb2 − xBixS3 compounds are semiconducting with direct band gaps of 1.32 and 1.30 eV for x = 0.4 and 1.0, respectively. On the basis of the experimental results, a possible growth mechanism for the flower-like Sb2 − xBixS3 nanostructures is suggested

Whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) after local treatment of brain metastases in melanoma patients: Statistical Analysis Plan

    Get PDF
Background: The WBRTMel trial is a multinational, open-label, phase III randomised controlled trial comparing whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) to observation following local treatment of one to three melanoma brain metastases with surgery and/or stereotactic irradiation. The primary trial endpoint was to determine the effect of adding WBRT to local treatment on distant intracranial control, and the secondary endpoints were neurocognitive function, quality of life (QoL), performance status, overall survival, death from intracranial causes, death from melanoma and cost-effectiveness. Objective: The objective of this update is to outline and publish the pre-determined statistical analysis plan (SAP) before the database lock and the start of analysis. Methods: The SAP describes basic analysis principles, methods for dealing with a range of commonly encountered data analysis issues and the specific statistical procedures for analysing efficacy and safety outcomes. The SAP was approved after closure of recruitment and before completion of patient follow-up. It outlines the planned primary analyses and a range of subgroup and sensitivity analyses regarding the clinical and QoL outcomes. Health economic outcomes are not included in this plan but will be analysed separately. The SAP will be adhered to for the final data analysis of this trial to avoid analysis bias arising from knowledge of the data. Results: The resulting SAP is consistent with best practice and will allow open and transparent reporting. Conclusion: We have developed a SAP for the WBRTMel trial which will be followed to ensure high-quality standards of internal validity to minimise analysis bias

The Changing of the Guard: The New American Labor Leader

This article analyzes recent changes in the leadership of international unions. There has been a trend toward leaders who are lifetime bureaucrats rather than rank-and-file members with charisma. This change toward more technocratic leadership is due to the different environment and new challenges that labor currently faces. The United Mine Workers is a good example of a union that has had many changes in the type of person who has become president, from the labor giant John L. Lewis to the 33-year-old lawyer Richard Trumka. The United Auto Workers is an example of a union whose leadership has been consistently drawn from the union hierarchy. The AFL-CIO has made a change in leadership from George Meany to the labor bureaucrat Lane Kirkland. There will probably be an increase in the number of women and minorities in top leadership positions in unions, but this will be a gradual increase.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66627/2/10.1177_000271628447300107.pd

When Qualitative Teachers Care: A Roundtable

When Qualitative Teachers Care: A Roundtable Cynthia Lubin Langtiw, PsyD Associate Professor The Chicago School of Professional Psychology Nancy Bothne, PhD Assistant Professor The Chicago School of Professional Psychology To educate as the practice of freedom is a way of teaching that anyone can learn. That learning process comes easiest to those of us who teach who also believe that there is an aspect of our vocation that is sacred; who believe that our work is not merely to share information but to share in the intellectual and spiritual growth of our students. To teach in a manner that respects and cares for the souls of our students is essential if we are to provide the necessary conditions where learning can most deeply and intimately begin. Throughout my years as student and professor, I have been most inspired by those teachers who have had the courage to transgress those boundaries that would confine each pupil to a rote, assembly-line approach to learning. (hooks ,1994 p. 13) It takes deep courage to embark on the transformational journey of teaching. The murky waters of qualitative research make the teaching journey even more tenuous. As teachers of qualitative research we are tasked with teaching research from a paradigm with which many students are not familiar. Students often approach qualitative research with misgivings, misconceptions and high hopes. And as teachers of qualitative research we help them navigate the murky waters. We shift the paradigm. We peel back the curtain. We sit with them in their moments of uncertainty. We help them tell their story to the institutional review boards so they can tell their participants’ stories. We entertain their lofty ideas and help them bring them to fruition. We care for them. In this roundtable we will explore the strategies that we use to care for our students, and ourselves, as we teach qualitative research. Bring your syllabi, creative assignments, foibles and successes and we will delve into the depths of caring and teaching, together. Reference hooks, b. (1994).
