Towards the deformation quantization of linearized gravity
We present a first attempt to apply the approach of deformation quantization
to linearized Einstein's equations. We use the analogy with Maxwell equations
to derive the field equations of linearized gravity from a modified Maxwell
Lagrangian which allows the construction of a Hamiltonian in the standard way.
The deformation quantization procedure for free fields is applied to this
Hamiltonian. As a result we obtain the complete set of quantum states and its
discrete spectrum.Comment: 13 pages, no figures **preliminary entry **
Dumping inflaton energy density out of this world
We argue that a brane world with a warped, infinite extra dimension allows
for the inflaton to decay into the bulk so that after inflation, the effective
dark energy disappears from our brane. This is achieved by the redshifting of
the decay products into infinity of the 5th dimension. As a consequence, all
matter and CMB density perturbations could have their origin in the decay of a
MSSM flat direction rather than the inflaton. We also discuss a string
theoretical model where reheating after inflation may not affect the observable
brane.Comment: 16 page
This report describes a case of knee septic arthritis in a 69-year-old diabetic patient. At
the time of admission he was receiving local treatment for a chronic skin ulcer in the same extremity and
inespecific oral antibiotherapy because of an urinary tract infection. Synovial fluid cultures showed a Streptococcus
agalactiae (group B streptococcus). The infection had no response to specific parenteral antibiotherapy
and repeated joint irrigations-aspirations, and therefore surgical desbridement and synovectomy was required.
Despite of an intensive rehabilitation program, the affected knee developed ankylosis. In a review
of literature, it is remarkable the association between group B streptococcal arthritis and chronic skin ulcers
in diabetic patients and the potential severity of these infections
resultados satisfactoriosWe review 10 cases of ipsilateral hip and femoral shaft fractures. Operative treatment
was performed in all cases, with an average delay of 12 days (range: 3 to 22 days). Nine
femoral shaft fractures were stabilizated with an AO plate, and one, where the associated hip
fracture was initially missed, with a Küntscher rod. Hip fractures were fixed with cancellous
screws (8 cases) or Richards compression screw (2 cases). An early rehabilitation program was
carried out in all patients. The average follow-up was 31 months (range: 12 to 84 months). All
fractures healed. Complications were a case of femoral shortening an a case of post-traumatic
hip osteoarthritis. In our study, the combination of AO plate for the shaft fracture with cancellous
screws or Richards compression screw for the hip fracture provides good results
The Non-Canonical Wnt/PKC Pathway Regulates Mitochondrial Dynamics through Degradation of the Arm-Like Domain-Containing Protein Alex3
The regulation of mitochondrial dynamics is vital in complex cell types, such as neurons, that transport and localize mitochondria in high energy-demanding cell domains. The Armcx3 gene encodes a mitochondrial-targeted protein (Alex3) that contains several arm-like domains. In a previous study we showed that Alex3 protein regulates mitochondrial aggregation and trafficking. Here we studied the contribution of Wnt proteins to the mitochondrial aggregation and dynamics regulated by Alex3. Overexpression of Alex3 in HEK293 cells caused a marked aggregation of mitochondria, which was attenuated by treatment with several Wnts. We also found that this decrease was caused by Alex3 degradation induced by Wnts. While the Wnt canonical pathway did not alter the pattern of mitochondrial aggregation induced by Alex3, we observed that the Wnt/PKC non-canonical pathway regulated both mitochondrial aggregation and Alex3 protein levels, thereby rendering a mitochondrial phenotype and distribution similar to control patterns. Our data suggest that the Wnt pathway regulates mitochondrial distribution and dynamics through Alex3 protein degradation
Cosmology and two-body problem of D-branes
In this paper, we investigate the dynamics and the evolution of the scale
factor of a probe Dp-brane which move in the background of source Dp-branes.
Action of the probe brane is described by the Born-Infeld action and the
interaction with the background R-R field. When the probe brane moves away from
the source branes, it expands by power law, whose index depends on the
dimension of the brane. If the energy density of the gauge field on the brane
is subdominant, the expansion is decelerating irrespective of the dimension of
the brane. On the other hand, when the probe brane is a Nambu-Goto brane, the
energy density of the gauge field can be dominant, in which case accelerating
expansion occurs for . The accelerating expansion stops when the
brane has expanded sufficiently so that the energy density of the gauge field
become subdominant.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, reference added, accepted for publication in PR
Staphylococcus aureus nasal colonization in Spanish children. The COSACO nationwide surveillance study
Objective: To assess the prevalence and risk factors for S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) nasal colonization in Spanish children.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of patients <14 years from primary care centers all over Spain. Clinical data and nasal aspirates were collected from March to July 2018.
Results: A total of 1876 patients were enrolled. Prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA colonization were 33% (95% CI 30.9–35.1) and 1.44% (95% CI 0.9–2), respectively. Thirtythree percent of the children (633/1876) presented chronic conditions, mainly atopic dermatitis, asthma and/or allergy (524/633). Factors associated with S. aureus colonization were age =5 years (OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.07–1.12), male sex (OR 1.43, 95% CI 1.17–1.76), urban setting (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.08–1.97) and the presence of asthma, atopic dermatitis or allergies (OR 1.25; 95% CI: 1.093–1.43). Rural residence was the only factor associated with MRSA colonization (OR 3.62, 95% CI 1.57–8.36). MRSA was more frequently resistant than methicillin-susceptible S. aureus to ciprofloxacin [41.2% vs 2.6%; p<0.0001], clindamycin [26% vs 16.9%; p=0.39], and mupirocin [14.3% vs 6.7%; p=0.18]. None of the MRSA strains was resistant to tetracycline, fosfomycin, vancomycin or daptomycin.
Conclusions: The main risk factors for S. aureus colonization in Spanish children are being above five years of age, male gender, atopic dermatitis, asthma or allergy, and residence in urban areas. MRSA colonization is low, but higher than in other European countries and is associated with rural settings
Astrophysical and Cosmological Implications of Large Volume String Compactifications
We study the spectrum, couplings and cosmological and astrophysical
implications of the moduli fields for the class of Calabi-Yau IIB string
compactifications for which moduli stabilisation leads to an exponentially
large volume V ~ 10^{15} l_s^6 and an intermediate string scale m_s ~
10^{11}GeV, with TeV-scale observable supersymmetry breaking. All K\"ahler
moduli except for the overall volume are heavier than the susy breaking scale,
with m ~ ln(M_P/m_{3/2}) m_{3/2} ~ (\ln(M_P/m_{3/2}))^2 m_{susy} ~ 500 TeV and,
contrary to standard expectations, have matter couplings suppressed only by the
string scale rather than the Planck scale. These decay to matter early in the
history of the universe, with a reheat temperature T ~ 10^7 GeV, and are free
from the cosmological moduli problem (CMP). The heavy moduli have a branching
ratio to gravitino pairs of 10^{-30} and do not suffer from the gravitino
overproduction problem. The overall volume modulus is a distinctive feature of
these models and is an M_{planck}-coupled scalar of mass m ~ 1 MeV and subject
to the CMP. A period of thermal inflation can help relax this problem. This
field has a lifetime ~ 10^{24}s and can contribute to dark matter. It may be
detected through its decays to 2\gamma or e^+e^-. If accessible the e^+e^-
decay mode dominates, with Br(\chi \to 2 \gamma) suppressed by a factor
(ln(M_P/m_{3/2}))^2. We consider the potential for detection of this field
through different astrophysical sources and find that the observed gamma-ray
background constrains \Omega_{\chi} <~ 10^{-4}. The decays of this field may
generate the 511 keV emission line from the galactic centre observed by
INTEGRAL/SPI.Comment: 31 pages, 2 figures; v2. refs adde
