    Coherence in laser-induced Compton scattering

    The concept of the electron mass dressing by a powerful laser pulse is discussed. It is shown, by considering the coherent frequency combs generated out of the Compton radiation, how the electron dressed mass can be determined experimentally. This also opens a possibility to measure properties of extremely intense pulses for which the previously developed methods, working at moderate intensities, are not applicable. Namely, one can determine these properties from the properties of coherent Compton radiation

    The Medical Oncology resident mentor: situation and workload

Materials and methods: The current situation and opinion regarding the activity of MO resident mentors was analyzed by reviewing the standing national and autonomic community regulations and via an online survey targeting mentors, residents, and physicians who are not MO mentors. The project was supervised by a specially designated group that agreed on a proposal containing recommendations for improvement. Results: Of the MO mentors, 90% stated that they did not have enough time to perform their mentoring duties. An estimated 172 h/year on average was dedicated to mentoring, which represents 10.1% of the total time. MO mentors dedicate an average of 6.9 h/month to these duties outside their workday. Forty-five percent of the mentors feel that their role is scantly recognized, if at all. Conclusions: The study reveals the substantial dedication and growing complexity of MO resident mentoring. A series of recommendations are issued to improve the conditions in which it is carried out, including the design of systems that adapt to the professional activity in those departments that have time set aside for mentoring tasks.This study was funded as an unrestricted grant by Servier.     Evaluating trifluridine + tipiracil hydrochloride in a fixed combination (TAS-102) for the treatment of colorectal cancer

    Introduction: Despite major progress in treating advanced colorectal cancer (CRC), prognosis in this population after progression on standard treatment remains dismal and the development of new drugs represents an unmet need. Historically, fluoropyrimidines have played a major role in the treatment of metastatic CRC. TAS-102, a novel combination of trifluridine and tipiracil hydrochloride, has demonstrated improvement in overall survival in the refractory CRC setting, with a safe toxicity profile. Areas covered: A literature review of published clinical studies was performed. Herein, the authors review the pharmacological and clinical data of TAS-102 when used in metastatic CRC, both as a single agent as well as in novel combinations under investigation. Expert opinion: The addition of TAS-102 to the therapeutic armamentarium of metastatic CRC is an encouraging breakthrough considering the demonstrated survival benefit and favorable tolerability profile. Combinations with other agents are under clinical investigation in different settings in an attempt to widen its use. To optimize treatment in today’s era of molecular oncology, efforts should be focused on understanding primary and secondary resistance mechanisms, along with the identification of potential biomarkers of response

    Significance of molecular diagnostics in human papilloma virus (HPV) determination

    HPV infection is considered to be the most important etiologic factor in cervical cancer development. In this retrospective study, which included the period from 2000 to 2012, the results of two molecular techniques used in the detection of HPV infection among women of the South Bačka District were analyzed. By using the technique of in situ hybridization and the rPCR method, the proportion of high-risk HPV among women with normal cytology was determined to be 19.8% and 32.7%, respectively, and among women with abnormal cytology 43.1% and 61%, respectively. Among the analyzed women, HPV type 16 was the most prevalent, followed by HPV types 31, 51 and 18. Application of molecular HPV diagnosis is valuable because it increases the sensitivity of the screening test, so that the application of both tests to detect cervical cancer is a true prevention of malignancy

    Gender influence on work satisfaction and leadership for medical oncologists: a survey of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM)

The Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) undertook a survey to investigate gender disparity in the Spanish oncology context. Design An online survey was made available to SEOM medical oncologists between February and May 2019. It included demographics, professional context and achievements, parenthood and family conciliation issues, workplace gender bias, and approaches to address disparities. Results Of the 316 eligible respondents, 71.5% were women, 59.5% were aged 45 or younger, and 66.1% had children. Among women, 12.4% were division or unit heads, compared with 45.5% of men, with most women (74.3%) being attending medical oncologists, compared with 45.5% of men. More males were professors (34.4% versus 14.2% of females), had a PhD (46.7% versus 28.8%), and/or had led clinical research groups (41.1% versus 9.7%). Spending time overseas after completing a residency was also more common for men than women (34.4% versus 20.4%). Professional satisfaction was similar between genders, driven primarily by patient care and intellectual stimulation. More women (40.7%) considered parenthood to have a strong negative impact on their career, compared with men (9.0%). Main perceived barriers to gender equality included a lack of work–life balance (72.6% women, 44.4% men), bias of peers and superiors (50.0% women, 18.9% men), and different career goals (41.2% women, 24.4% men). Preferred solutions included educational programs and scholarships (52.9%), communication and leadership training (35.8%), childcare at conferences (33.2%), and postmaternity return-to-work incentives (32.0%). Conclusion There is a clear paucity of equal opportunities for female oncologists in Spain. This can be addressed by encouraging professional development and merit recognition particularly for younger female oncologists, and empowering women to be involved in management and leadership of institutions and professional societies.This study was funded by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) (no grant number)

    Influenza A and B viruses in the population of Vojvodina, Serbia

    At present, two influenza A viruses, H1N1pdm09 and H3N2, along with influenza B virus co-circulate in the human population, causing endemic and seasonal epidemic acute febrile respiratory infections, sometimes with life-threatening complications. Detection of influenza viruses in nasopharyngeal swab samples was done by real-time RT-PCR. There were 60.2% (53/88) positive samples in 2010/11, 63.4% (52/82) in 2011/12, and 49.9% (184/369) in 2012/13. Among the positive patients, influenza A viruses were predominant during the first two seasons, while influenza B type was more active during 2012/13. Subtyping of influenza A positive samples revealed the presence of A (H1N1)pdm09 in 2010/11, A (H3N2) in 2011/12, while in 2012/13, both subtypes were detected.     Structure and kinematics of the Ayora-Cofrentes Diapir (eastern Betics). Role of basement faulting in the salt and suprasalt deformation of the Mesozoic cover

    The Ayora-Cofrentes Diapir is a 34 km long N-trending salt wall cutting the Valencian Domain that is made by Middle to Upper Triassic salt. On both sides, it is flanked by parallel half grabens offsetting the subtabular strata of the Jurassic to Cretaceous suprasalt carbonate successions. Based on detailed geological mapping and cross-sections, one of them supported by a new magnetotelluric profile, this study analyses the structure and kinematics of this salt wall with the purpose of establishing the role played by the subsalt structure in its development; and, thus, help in the interpretation of diapirs currently incorporated in fold and thrust belts. In this regard, the study evidences the presence of a subsalt basement fault (the Ayora Fault), active as extensional during the Early Jurassic, and reactivated with a reverse throw sometime between the latest Cretaceous and middle Miocene. Both motions are older than the salt wall growth (middle-late Miocene). This strongly suggest that the Ayora-Cofrentes Diapir was not triggered by the vertical motion of the underlying Ayora basement fault but by thin-skinned processes for which this pre-existing basement fault appears to have played a crucial role as salt/suprasal strain localizer
