On the stability of domestic financial market linkages in the presence of time-varying volatility

We analyze the stability of domestic financial linkages between periods of calm and turbulent market conditions. Our model develops a simultaneous test of shift contagion and bi-directional pure contagion, which is applied to the equity and currency markets of a group of East Asian emerging economies. Our results show a great deal of instability in these markets with widespread evidence of pure contagion in both directions. There is less evidence of shift contagion with the transmission of common shocks unchanged between regimes for the majority of countries.Shift contagion; Pure contagion; Financial market crises; Regime switching

Variation and pigmentation in the milliped, \u3ci\u3eXystocheir brachymacris\u3c/i\u3e Shelley, 1996, from the northern Sierra Nevada foothills, California, USA (Polydesmida: Xystodesmidae: Xystocheirini)

A newly discovered population of Xystocheir brachymacris Shelley, 1996 (Polydesmida: Xystodesmidae: Xystocheirini), in Placer County (Co.), California, exhibits an unusual grayish-black color dorsally with mottled, ovoid patches at paranotal bases; it cons titutes northern generic and specifi c range extensions of ~28.4 km (17.6 mi). The gonopods differ from those in the El Dorado Co. population in having shorter/acuminate prefemoral processes and blade-like, rather than spatulate, processes “B” that angle away from the solenomere instead of overhanging it. Additionally, a strong distomedial prefemoral lobe, absent from the El Dorado population, arises from the stem in Placer Co. males. An invitation to use craigslist ads to recruit respondents from stigmatized groups for qualitative interviews

Craigslist.org is a website devoted to classified advertisements as well as discussion forums with locations in more than 700 sites in 70 countries. At an estimated 30 billion page views per month and more than 50 million new classified ads posted monthly, craigslist ads have the ability to reach a wide audience. Although wildly popular, no studies to date have investigated the use of craigslist ads for qualitative research study recruitment. In this research note, I offer my own experiences from 2011 to 2012 using craigslist ads (N = 77) to recruit obese respondents (N = 38) for qualitative interviews in one major metro area in the southern United States. I also discuss some advantages and limitations of using craigslist as a recruitment tool. The usability of the Judd-Ofelt theory for luminescent thermometry using Eu3+-doped phosphate glass

The Judd-Ofelt theory, which is the most thorough and insightful method to determine theoretically the luminescent properties of the trivalent rare earth dopants, is here tested on Eu3+-doped glasses in the P2O5 – SrO – CaO – Na2O system to assess their usefulness as luminescent thermometers. It is demonstrated that the thermometric sensitivity (change of the emission lines ratio in response to change in temperature) can be estimated using the Judd-Ofelt theory and aligns well with the experimentally obtained values. It is shown here that the addition of B2O3 or SiO2 in a phosphate network increases the absolute sensitivity due to an increase in the phosphate network connectivity while having no significant impact on the site of Eu3+ ions. The applicability of the Judd-Ofelt theory for predicting the thermometric parameters of a glass luminescent material, without the time-consuming measurement of the glasses spectroscopic properties as a function of temperature, is clearly demonstrated and allows for further development of novel efficient luminescent thermal sensors with high sensitivity

Estimation of Daily Air Temperature Based on MODIS Land Surface Temperature Products over the Corn Belt in the US

Air temperature (Ta) is a key input in a wide range of agroclimatic applications. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Ts (Land Surface Temperature (LST)) products are widely used to estimate daily Ta. However, only daytime LST (Ts-day) or nighttime LST (Ts-night) data have been used to estimate Tmax/Tmin (daily maximum or minimum air temperature), respectively. The relationship between Tmax and Ts-night, and the one between Tmin and Ts-day has not been studied. In this study, both the ability of Ts-night data to estimate Tmax and the ability of Ts-day data to estimate Tmin were tested and studied in the Corn Belt during the growing season (May–September) from 2008 to 2012, using MODIS daily LST products from both Terra and Aqua. The results show that using Ts-night for estimating Tmax could result in a higher accuracy than using Ts-day for a similar estimate. Combining Ts-day and Ts-night, the estimation of Tmax was improved by 0.19–1.85, 0.37–1.12 and 0.26–0.93 °C for crops, deciduous forest and developed areas, respectively, when compared with using only Ts-day or Ts-night data. The main factors influencing the Ta estimation errors spatially and temporally were analyzed and discussed, such as satellite overpassing time, air masses, irrigation, etc
