    Coordination Variability after Hip Replacement Surgery: A Case Report

    Patients with unilateral hip replacement surgery have an increased risk for additional joint replacement surgeries in the contralateral limb. Reduced coordination variability (Cvar) is associated with orthopedic disorders. Differences in joint Cvar after hip replacement surgery may provide information regarding the progression to a healthier state. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in surgical and contralateral limb knee and hip Cvar before and after surgery. A male participant completed gait analyses prior to total hip arthroplasty, three weeks following surgery (post-op) and ten months after surgery. He walked at a preferred speed while three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic data were recorded. A modified vector coding technique was used to determine the bilateral Cvar throughout stance for thigh-leg and pelvis-thigh flexion/extension and internal/external rotation coordination. Cvar was averaged for the stance phase of gait at each visit. Effect Size (ES) was calculated to determine clinically significant differences in variability both between the surgical and contralateral limbs and for each visit (Tables 1 and 2). In the surgical limb, variability was similar at all visits for pelvis-thigh and thigh-shank flexion/extension and internal/external rotation (ES\u3c0.5). Differences in (Cvar) between the surgical and contralateral limbs diminished with time. While Cvar in the surgical limb did not change, Cvar in the contralateral limb decreased over time. This may indicate a decline in health and an increased risk for orthopedic disorders in the contralateral limb after hip replacement surgery

    Gating NO Release from Nitric Oxide Synthase

    We have investigated the kinetics of NO escape from Geobacillus stearothermophilus nitric oxide synthase (gsNOS). Previous work indicated that NO release was gated at position 223 in mammalian enzymes; our kinetics experiments include mutants at that position along with measurements on the wild type enzyme. Employing stopped-flow UV–vis methods, reactions were triggered by mixing a reduced enzyme/N-hydroxy-l-arginine complex with an aerated buffer solution. NO release kinetics were obtained for wt NOS and three mutants (H134S, I223V, H134S/I223V). We have confirmed that wt gsNOS has the lowest NO release rate of known NOS enzymes, whether bacterial or mammalian. We also have found that steric clashes at positions 223 and 134 hinder NO escape, as judged by enhanced rates in the single mutants. The empirical rate of NO release from the gsNOS double mutant (H134/I223V) is nearly as rapid as that of the fastest mammalian enzymes, demonstrating that both positions 223 and 134 function as gates for escape of the product diatomic molecule

    Pearling: stroke segmentation with crusted pearl strings

    We introduce a novel segmentation technique, called Pearling, for the semi-automatic extraction of idealized models of networks of strokes (variable width curves) in images. These networks may for example represent roads in an aerial photograph, vessels in a medical scan, or strokes in a drawing. The operator seeds the process by selecting representative areas of good (stroke interior) and bad colors. Then, the operator may either provide a rough trace through a particular path in the stroke graph or simply pick a starting point (seed) on a stroke and a direction of growth. Pearling computes in realtime the centerlines of the strokes, the bifurcations, and the thickness function along each stroke, hence producing a purified medial axis transform of a desired portion of the stroke graph. No prior segmentation or thresholding is required. Simple gestures may be used to trim or extend the selection or to add branches. The realtime performance and reliability of Pearling results from a novel disk-sampling approach, which traces the strokes by optimizing the positions and radii of a discrete series of disks (pearls) along the stroke. A continuous model is defined through subdivision. By design, the idealized pearl string model is slightly wider than necessary to ensure that it contains the stroke boundary. A narrower core model that fits inside the stroke is computed simultaneously. The difference between the pearl string and its core contains the boundary of the stroke and may be used to capture, compress, visualize, or analyze the raw image data along the stroke boundary

    Using Airborne Multispectral Imagery to Evaluate Geomorphic Work Across Floodplains of Gravel-Bed Rivers

    Fluvial processes of cut and fill alluviation and channel abandonment or avulsion are essential for maintaining the ecological health of floodplain ecosystems characteristic of gravel-bed rivers. These dynamic processes shape the floodplain landscape, resulting in a shifting mosaic of habitats, both above and below ground. We present a new and innovative methodology to quantitatively assess the geomorphic work potential necessary to maintain a shifting habitat mosaic for gravel-bed river floodplains. This approach can be used to delineate critical habitats for preservation through land acquisition and conservation easements, often critical elements of river restoration plans worldwide. Spatially explicit modeling of water depth, flow velocity, shear stress, and stream power derived from surface hydraulic measurements was combined with airborne multispectral remote sensing for detailed modeling of floodplain water surfaces over tens to hundreds of square kilometers. The model results were then combined within a GIS framework to determine potential nodes of channel avulsion that delineate spatially explicit zones across the floodplain where the potential for geomorphic work is the greatest. Results of this study demonstrate the utility of integrating existing multispectral remote sensing data coupled with time-lagged ground-based measures of flow hydraulics to model fluvial processes at relatively fine spatial resolutions but over broad regional extents

    Kinetics of CO recombination to the heme in Geobacillus stearothermophilus nitric oxide synthase

    We report the kinetics of CO rebinding to the heme in His134Ser, Ile223Val and His134Ser/Ile223Ser mutants of Geobacillus stearothermophilus nitric oxide synthase (gsNOS). The amplitudes of the two observed kinetics phases, which are insensitive to CO concentration, depend on enzyme concentration. We suggest that two forms of gsNOS are in equilibrium under the conditions employed (6.1–27 ÎŒM gsNOS with 20 or 100% CO atmosphere). The kinetics of CO rebinding to the heme do not depend on the identity of the NO-gate residues at positions 134 and 223

    License prices for financially constrained firms

    It is often alleged that high auction prices inhibit service deployment. We investigate this claim under the extreme case of financially constrained bidders. If demand is just slightly elastic, auctions maximize consumer surplus if consumer surplus is a convex function of quantity (a common assumption), or if consumer surplus is concave and the proportion of expenditure spent on deployment is greater than one over the elasticity of demand. The latter condition appears to be true for most of the large telecom auctions in the US and Europe. Thus, even if high auction prices inhibit service deployment, auctions appear to be optimal from the consumers’ point of view

    Debt Maturity Choices, Multi-stage Investments and Financing Constraints

    We develop a dynamic investment options framework with optimal capital structure and analyze the effect of debt maturity. We find that in the absence of financing constraints short-term debt maximizes firm value. In contrast with most literature results, in the absence of constraints, higher volatility may increase initial debt for firms with low initial revenues, issuing long term debt that expires after the investment option maturity. This effect, which is due to the option value of receiving the value of assets and remaining tax savings, does not hold for short term debt and firms with high profitability, where an increase in volatility reduces the firm value. The importance of short-term debt is reduced in the presence of non-negative equity net worth or debt financing constraints and firms behave more conservatively in the use of initial debt. With non-negative equity net worth, higher volatility has adverse effects on the firm value, while with debt financing constraints higher volatility may enhance firm value for firms with relatively low revenue that have out-of-the-money investment options

    Electronic structure of the MO oxides (M=Mg, Ca, Ti, V) in the GW approximation

    The quasiparticle band structures of nonmagnetic monoxides, MO (M=Mg, Ca, Ti, and V), are calculated by the GW approximation. The band gap and the width of occupied oxygen 2p states in insulating MgO and CaO agree with experimental observation. In metallic TiO and VO, conduction bands originated from metal 3d states become narrower. Then the partial densities of transition metal e_g and t_2g states show an enhanced dip between the two. The effects of static screening and dynamical correlation are discussed in detail in comparison with the results of the Hartree-Fock approximation and the static Coulomb hole plus screened exchange approximation. The d-d Coulomb interaction is shown to be very much reduced by on-site and off-site d-electron screening in TiO and VO. The dielectric function and the energy loss spectrum are also presented and discussed in detail.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Gender Differences in Russian Colour Naming

    In the present study we explored Russian colour naming in a web-based psycholinguistic experiment (http://www.colournaming.com). Colour singletons representing the Munsell Color Solid (N=600 in total) were presented on a computer monitor and named using an unconstrained colour-naming method. Respondents were Russian speakers (N=713). For gender-split equal-size samples (NF=333, NM=333) we estimated and compared (i) location of centroids of 12 Russian basic colour terms (BCTs); (ii) the number of words in colour descriptors; (iii) occurrences of BCTs most frequent non-BCTs. We found a close correspondence between females’ and males’ BCT centroids. Among individual BCTs, the highest inter-gender agreement was for seryj ‘grey’ and goluboj ‘light blue’, while the lowest was for sinij ‘dark blue’ and krasnyj ‘red’. Females revealed a significantly richer repertory of distinct colour descriptors, with great variety of monolexemic non-BCTs and “fancy” colour names; in comparison, males offered relatively more BCTs or their compounds. Along with these measures, we gauged denotata of most frequent CTs, reflected by linguistic segmentation of colour space, by employing a synthetic observer trained by gender-specific responses. This psycholinguistic representation revealed females’ more refined linguistic segmentation, compared to males, with higher linguistic density predominantly along the redgreen axis of colour space
