The Problem of Lighting in Underground Domes, Vaults, and Tunnel-Like Structures of Antiquity; An Application to the Sustainability of Prominent Asian Heritage (India, Korea, China)
Lighting in heritage is complex because of the forms intervening in it. The historical
evolution of cultures has not been analytical and therefore, the shapes involved di er greatly from
the cuboids typically found in 21st century architecture. As a vector, light inevitably attaches to
surface sources. In this research, we focused on 3D curved geometries. Following a di erent trail
to radiative transfer by virtue of detailed knowledge of the spatiality of volumes, we present new
expressions, previously undefined in the literature, that are derived from a combination of surfaces
that we have found in many archaeological sites around Asia. In the discussion, we start from the
particularities of spherical surfaces where a normal vector has to pass through the center. By means
of easy calculations, we deducted innovative laws. These in turn, allowed us to formulate several
new expressions for configuration factors based on the adroit use of spherical fragments. The method
easily extends to organic shapes that are often contained in the sustainable architecture of the past.
The method finishes with suitable algorithms to assess the reflections in such curved forms. Finally,
we implemented the results in our creative software. In this way, we enhanced the sustainable
paradigms for heritage structures in Asia that we present as a conclusion of the article
A generic persistence model for CLP systems (and two useful implementations)
This paper describes a model of persistence in (C)LP languages and two different and practically very useful ways to implement this model in current systems. The fundamental idea is that persistence is a characteristic of certain dynamic predicates (Le., those which encapsulate
state). The main effect of declaring a predicate persistent is that the dynamic changes made to such predicates persist from one execution to the next one. After proposing a syntax for declaring persistent predicates, a simple, file-based implementation of the concept is presented and
some examples shown. An additional implementation is presented which stores persistent predicates in an external datábase. The abstraction of the concept of persistence from its implementation allows developing applications
which can store their persistent predicates alternatively in files or databases with only a few simple changes to a declaration stating the location and modality used for persistent storage. The paper presents the model, the implementation approach in both the cases of using files
and relational databases, a number of optimizations of the process (using information obtained from static global analysis and goal clustering), and performance results from an implementation of these ideas
Evaluation of an organo-layered double hydroxide and two organic residues as amendments to immobilize metalaxyl enantiomers in soils: A comparative study
Many pollutants released into the environment as a result of human activities are chiral. Pollution control strategies generally consider chiral compounds as if they were achiral and rarely consider enantiomers separately. We compared the performance of three different materials, an organically-modified anionic clay (HT-ELA) and two organic agro-food residues (ALP and ALPc), as amendments to immobilize the chiral fungicide metalaxyl in two soils with different textures, addressing the effects of the amendments on the sorption, persistence, and leaching of each of the two enantiomers of metalaxyl (R-metalaxyl and S-metalaxyl) separately. The effects of the amendments were both soil- and amendment-dependent, as well as enantiomer-selective. The organo-clay (HT-ELA) was much more efficient in increasing the sorption capacity of the soils for the two enantiomers of metalaxyl than the agro-food residues (ALP and ALPc), even when applied at a reduced application rate. The enhanced sorption in HT-ELA-amended soils reduced the bioavailability of metalaxyl enantiomers and their leaching in the soils, mitigating the particularly high leaching potential of the more persistent S enantiomer. The immobilizing capacity of the agro-food residues was more variable, mainly because their addition did not greatly ameliorate the sorption capacity of the soils and had variable effects on the enantiomers degradation rates. HT-ELA showed potential to reduce the bioavailability and mobility of metalaxyl enantiomers in soil and to mitigate the contamination problems particularly associated with the higher leaching potential of the more persistent enantiomer.

A numerical investigation of changes in lens shape during accommodation
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the mechanical properties and geometry of the lens influence the changes in lens shape during accommodation. To do so, ex vivo stretching tests of the isolated lens were simulated via finite element analysis. In these tests, the lens is stretched from the accommodated state to the non-accommodated state. Several key characteristics of the lens were studied: the stiffness gradient of the lens material, the distribution of the capsule thickness, the mechanical properties of the capsule and the material comprising the lens, nucleus and cortex, and the influence of two different age-related lens geometries (17 and 29 y/o subjects). To determine the effects on the changes in lens shape during accommodation, changes in the anterior and posterior radius, the lens and nucleus thicknesses and the equatorial lens diameter were analysed. The results suggest that multiple factors exert statistically significant influences on how the lens changes its shape, but two factors predominate over the rest: the stiffness ratio between the nucleus and cortex and the stiffness of the capsule, specifically the posterior surface
Assessing the effectiveness of a national protected area network for carnivore conservation
Protected areas (PAs) are essential to prevent further biodiversity loss yet their effectiveness varies largely with governance and external threats. Although methodological advances have permitted assessments of PA effectiveness in mitigating deforestation, we still lack similar studies for the impact of PAs on wildlife populations. Here we use an innovative combination of matching methods and hurdle-mixed models with a large-scale and long-term dataset for Finland's large carnivore species. We show that the national PA network does not support higher densities than non-protected habitat for 3 of the 4 species investigated. For some species, PA effects interact with region or time, i.e., wolverine densities decreased inside PAs over the study period and lynx densities increased inside eastern PAs. We support the application of matching methods in combination of additional analytical frameworks for deeper understanding of conservation impacts on wildlife populations. These methodological advances are crucial for preparing ambitious PA targets post-2020. Assessing the effectiveness of protected areas for wildlife conservation is challenging. Here, Terraube et al. combine statistical matching and hurdle mixed-effects models to show that PAs have limited impact on population densities of large carnivores across Finland.Peer reviewe
