An Electric Thrust Meter Suitable for Flight Investigation of Propellers
A lightweight instrument that utilizes resistance-wire electric strain gases to measure propeller-shaft thrust has been developed. A wind-tunnel investigation on a propeller installed, on a single-engine pursuit airplane showed that the instrument gave a reliable indication of propeller-shaft thrust to an accuracy of +/-2 percent within its calibrated range. No attempt was made to determine the relation of indicated shaft thrust to net propeller thrust
Boundary layer stability on a yawed spinning body of revolution and its effect on the magnus force and moment
The parameters are established which are important to the stability of a boundary layer flow over a yawed spinning cylinder in a uniform stream. It is shown that transition occurs asymmetrically in general and this asymmetry can be important for the prediction of aerodynamic forces and moments (e.g., the Magnus effect). Instability of the steady-state boundary layer flow is determined using small disturbance theory. Although the approach is strictly valid only for the calculation of the conditions for stability in the small, experimental data indicate that in many problems, it provides a good estimate for the transition to turbulence
Pressure and velocity measurements in a three-dimensional wall jet
The effects on the flow fields of varying the ratio of the velocity at the exit plane of the nozzle to the outer tunnel flow are reported. The pressure-velocity correlations are taken and some trends are discussed. Emphasis is placed on comparing the coherence between the fluctuating pressure and velocity fields at various locations in the different flow configurations
The interaction of unidirectional winds with an isolated barchan sand dune
Velocity profile measurements are determined on and around a barchan dune model inserted in the roughness layer on the tunnel floor. A theoretical investigation is made into the factors influencing the rate of sand flow around the dune. Flow visualization techniques are employed in the mapping of streamlines of flow on the dune's surface. Maps of erosion and deposition of sand are constructed for the barchan model, utilizing both flow visualization techniques and friction velocities calculated from the measured velocity profiles. The sediment budget found experimentally for the model is compared to predicted and observed results reported. The comparison shows fairly good agreement between the experimentally determined and predicted sediment budgets
An experimental investigation of an axisymmetric jet in a coflowing airstream
The flow development of an axisymmetric jet exhausting into a moving airstream has been studied. The jet has a Reynolds number of 22,600, and the ratio of the jet velocity to the wind tunnel velocity is 5.1 to 1. The flow field of the axisymmetric jet was examined at locations varying from approximately zero to eight diameters downstream of the orifice. Of primary concern at each downstream location was the mapping of the one point statistical properties of the flow, including mean velocity, turbulent intensity, and intermittency. Autocorrelations and power spectral density curves were determined for both the fluctuating velocity field and the concentration signal at various distances from the jet's center line for different downstream locations. A laser Doppler velocimeter, using a phase locked loop processor, was used to make the desired velocity field measurements which were compared with hot wire anemometer and pressure probe data
Simulation model of erosion and deposition on a barchan dune
Erosion and deposition over a barchan dune near the Salton Sea, California, are modeled by bookkeeping the quantity of sand in saltation following streamlines of transport. Field observations of near surface wind velocity and direction plus supplemental measurements of the velocity distribution over a scale model of the dune are combined as input to Bagnold type sand transport formulas corrected for slope effects. A unidirectional wind is assumed. The resulting patterns of erosion and deposition compare closely with those observed in the field and those predicted by the assumption of equilibrium (downwind translation of the dune without change in size or geometry). Discrepancies between the simulated results and the observed or predicted erosional patterns appear to be largely due to natural fluctuations in the wind direction. The shape of barchan dunes is a function of grain size, velocity, degree of saturation of the oncoming flow, and the variability in the direction of the oncoming wind. The size of the barchans may be controlled by natural atmospheric scales, by the age of the dunes, or by the upwind roughness. The upwind roughness can be controlled by fixed elements or by sand in the saltation. In the latter case, dune scale is determined by grain size and wind velocity
Investigations of scaling laws for jet impingement
The statistical properties of tangential flows over surfaces were investigated by two techniques. In one, a laser-Doppler velocimeter was used in a smoke-laden jet to measure one-point statistical properties, including mean velocities, turbulent intensities, intermittencies, autocorrelations, and power spectral densities. In the other technique, free stream and surface pressure probes connected to 1/8 inch microphones were used to obtain single point rms and 1/3 octave pressures, as well as two point cross correlations, the latter being converted to auto spectra, amplitude ratios, phase lags, and coherences. The results of these studies support the vortex model of jets, give some insights into the effects of surface impingement, and confirm that jet diameter and velocity are the scaling parameters for circular jets, while Reynolds number is relatively unimportant
Factors associated to Amblyomma variegatum presence on farms in Nevis and determination of high risks TBR areas
Tropical Bont Tick (TBT), Amblyomma variegatum, is an invasive tick species of ruminants present in 10 Caribbean islands. TBT and the associated disease dermatophilosis, have been a challenge to livestock development in Nevis, Northern West Indies, for the past 30 years. After the end of a regional eradication program, active surveillance and control was conducted by veterinary services between 2007 and 2009. However, prevalence of dermatophilosis increased with some areas more infested, highlighting the need to determine the factors associated with TBT presence on farms. A case-control study was conducted to identify (1) the risk factors associated with the occurrence of the TBT on Nevis; and (2) the areas at high risk of tick persistence. Cases were selected as farms with clinical signs consistent with dermatophilosis and confirmed to have TBT present between 2007-2009. Control farms, without evidence of TBT presence or dermatophilosis cases during same period, were selected from a regularly maintained list of all active farms on the island, and matched to the cases based on parish. A questionnaire was administered to all cases and controls, which collected information on control practices, awareness level to ticks issues, etc. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression performed to explore the relationship between measured variables and the presence of TBT. Risk factors related to TBT include farmer attitudes toward TBT control and species hold on the farms. After many years of unsuccessfully employing various strategies for the control and eradication for TBT and dermatophilosis, the Veterinary Authority in Nevis anticipate using the results of this study as the scientific foundation for a more sustainable, targeted approach to the control of this pest. The effect of concurrent training organisation in youth elite soccer players
Purpose: This study compared the adaptive responses to two concurrent training programmes frequently used in professional soccer. Methods: Fifteen youth soccer players (17.3 ± 1.6 years, 1.82 ± 0.06 m, 77.0 ± 7.3 kg; VO peak, 62.0 ± 4.7 ml kg min) who compete in the English Premier League volunteered for this study. In addition to completing their habitual training practices, the participants were asked to alter the organisation concurrent training by performing strength (S) training either prior to (S + E, n = 8) or after (E + S, n = 7) soccer-specific endurance training (E) 2d wk for 5 wk. Results: With the exception of 30 m sprint, IMVC PF, quadriceps strength (60°/s, 180°/s, 120°/s) pooled data revealed training effects across all other performances measures (P < 0.05). Whilst ANCOVA indicated no significant interaction effects for training condition, the difference between the means divided by the pooled standard deviation demonstrated large effect sizes in the E + S condition for in HBS 1-RM [S + E vs E + S; −0.54 (9.6 %) vs −1.79 (19.6 %)], AoP-M [−0.72 (7.9 %) vs −1.76 (14.4 %)], SJ [−0.56, (4.4 %), vs −1.08, (8.1 %)], IMVC-LR; [−0.50, (20.3 %) vs −1.05 (27.3 %)], isokinetic hamstring strength 60°/s [−0.64, (12.2 %) vs −0.95 (19.2 %)], 120°/s [−0.78 (27.9 %) vs −1.55 (23.3 %)] and isokinetic quadriceps strength 180°/s [−0.23 (2.5 %) vs −1.52 (13.2 %)]. Conclusion: Results suggest the organisation of concurrent training, recovery time allocated between training bouts and the availability nutrition may be able to modulate small but clinically significant changes in physical performance parameters associated with match-play. This may have practical implications for practitioners who prescribe same day concurrent training protocols
