Evaluation of selected strapdown inertial instruments and pulse torque loops, volume 1
Design, operational and performance variations between ternary, binary and forced-binary pulse torque loops are presented. A fill-in binary loop which combines the constant power advantage of binary with the low sampling error of ternary is also discussed. The effects of different output-axis supports on the performance of a single-degree-of-freedom, floated gyroscope under a strapdown environment are illustrated. Three types of output-axis supports are discussed: pivot-dithered jewel, ball bearing and electromagnetic. A test evaluation on a Kearfott 2544 single-degree-of-freedom, strapdown gyroscope operating with a pulse torque loop, under constant rates and angular oscillatory inputs is described and the results presented. Contributions of the gyroscope's torque generator and the torque-to-balance electronics on scale factor variation with rate are illustrated for a SDF 18 IRIG Mod-B strapdown gyroscope operating with various pulse rebalance loops. Also discussed are methods of reducing this scale factor variation with rate by adjusting the tuning network which shunts the torque coil. A simplified analysis illustrating the principles of operation of the Teledyne two-degree-of-freedom, elastically-supported, tuned gyroscope and the results of a static and constant rate test evaluation of that instrument are presented
Nonequilibrium quantum phase transition in itinerant electron systems
We study the effect of the voltage bias on the ferromagnetic phase transition
in a one-dimensional itinerant electron system. The applied voltage drives the
system into a nonequilibrium steady state with a non-zero electric current. The
bias changes the universality class of the second order ferromagnetic
transition. While the equilibrium transition belongs to the universality class
of the uniaxial ferroelectric, we find the mean-field behavior near the

Constructive Field Theory and Applications: Perspectives and Open Problems
In this paper we review many interesting open problems in mathematical
physics which may be attacked with the help of tools from constructive field
theory. They could give work for future mathematical physicists trained with
the constructive methods well within the 21st century
Axial and pseudoscalar current correlators and their couplings to eta and etaprime mesons
Correlators of singlet and octet axial currents, as well as anomaly and
pseudoscalar densities have been studied using QCD sum rules. Several of these
sum rules are used to determine the couplings f^8_eta, f^0_eta, f^8_etaprime
and f^0_etaprime. We find mutually consistent values which are also in
agreement with phenomenological values obtained from data on various decay and
production rates. While most of the sum rules studied by us are independent of
the contributions of direct instantons and screening correction, the
singlet-singlet current correlator and the anomaly-anomaly correlator improve

Review of Recent Searches for Rare and Forbidden Dilepton Decays of Charmed Mesons
I briefly review the results of recent searches for flavor-changing neutral
current and lepton-flavor and lepton-number violating decays of D+, Ds, and D0
mesons (and their antiparticles) into modes containing muons and electrons. The
primary focus is the results from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment
E791. E791 examined 24 pi,l,l and K,l,l decay modes of D+ and Ds and l+l- decay
modes of D0. Limits presented by E791 for 22 rare and forbidden dilepton decays
of D mesons were more stringent than those obtained from previous searches, or

RESIK observations of He-like Ar X-ray line emission in solar flares
The Ar XVII X-ray line group principally due to transitions 1s2 - 1s2l (l=s,
p) near 4 Anstroms was observed in numerous flares by the RESIK bent crystal
spectrometer aboard CORONAS-F between 2001 and 2003. The three line features
include the Ar XVII w (resonance line), a blend of x and y (intercombination
lines), and z (forbidden line), all of which are blended with Ar XVI
dielectronic satellites. The ratio G, equal to [I(x+y) + I(z)]/I(w), varies
with electron temperature Te mostly because of unresolved dielectronic
satellites. With temperatures estimated from GOES X-ray emission, the observed
G ratios agree fairly well with those calculated from CHIANTI and other data.
With a two-component emission measure, better agreement is achieved. Some S XV
and S XVI lines blend with the Ar lines, the effect of which occurs at
temperatures greater than 8MK, allowing the S/Ar abundance ratio to be
determined. This is found to agree with coronal values. A nonthermal
contribution is indicated for some spectra in the repeating-pulse flare of 2003

A solar spectroscopic absolute abundance of argon from RESIK
Observations of He-like and H-like Ar (Ar XVII and Ar XVIII) lines at 3.949
Angstroms and 3.733 Angstroms respectively with the RESIK X-ray spectrometer on
the CORONAS-F spacecraft, together with temperatures and emission measures from
the two channels of GOES, have been analyzed to obtain the abundance of Ar in
flare plasmas in the solar corona. The line fluxes per unit emission measure
show a temperature dependence like that predicted from theory, and lead to
spectroscopically determined values for the absolute Ar abundance, A(Ar) = 6.44
pm 0.07 (Ar XVII) and 6.49 pm 0.16 (Ar XVIII) which are in agreement to within
uncertainties. The weighted mean is 6.45 pm 0.06, which is between two recent
compilations of the solar Ar abundance and suggest that the photospheric and
coronal abundances of Ar are very similar.Comment: 4 figure
Lattice dynamics and reduced thermal conductivity of filled skutterudites
The great reduction in thermal conductivity of skutterudites upon filling the
``void'' sites with Rare Earth (RE) ions is key to their favorable
thermoelectric properties but remains to be understood. Using lattice dynamic
models based on first principles calculations, we address the most popular
microscopic mechanism, reduction via rattling ions. The model withstands
inelastic neutron scattering and specific heat measurements, and refutes
hypotheses of an anharmonic RE potential and of two distinct localized RE
vibrations of disparate frequencies. It does indicate a strong hybridization
between bare La vibrations and certain Sb-like phonon branches, suggesting
anharmonic scattering by harmonic RE motions as an important mechanism for

Nearly optimal solutions for the Chow Parameters Problem and low-weight approximation of halfspaces
The \emph{Chow parameters} of a Boolean function
are its degree-0 and degree-1 Fourier coefficients. It has been known
since 1961 (Chow, Tannenbaum) that the (exact values of the) Chow parameters of
any linear threshold function uniquely specify within the space of all
Boolean functions, but until recently (O'Donnell and Servedio) nothing was
known about efficient algorithms for \emph{reconstructing} (exactly or
approximately) from exact or approximate values of its Chow parameters. We
refer to this reconstruction problem as the \emph{Chow Parameters Problem.}
Our main result is a new algorithm for the Chow Parameters Problem which,
given (sufficiently accurate approximations to) the Chow parameters of any
linear threshold function , runs in time \tilde{O}(n^2)\cdot
(1/\eps)^{O(\log^2(1/\eps))} and with high probability outputs a
representation of an LTF that is \eps-close to . The only previous
algorithm (O'Donnell and Servedio) had running time \poly(n) \cdot
2^{2^{\tilde{O}(1/\eps^2)}}.
As a byproduct of our approach, we show that for any linear threshold
function over , there is a linear threshold function which
is \eps-close to and has all weights that are integers at most \sqrt{n}
\cdot (1/\eps)^{O(\log^2(1/\eps))}. This significantly improves the best
previous result of Diakonikolas and Servedio which gave a \poly(n) \cdot
2^{\tilde{O}(1/\eps^{2/3})} weight bound, and is close to the known lower
bound of (1/\eps)^{\Omega(\log \log (1/\eps))}\} (Goldberg,
Servedio). Our techniques also yield improved algorithms for related problems
in learning theory
A novel platform for isotype-specific testing of autoantibodies.
The objective of this study was to test if a novel platform could be used for isotype-specific autoantibody testing in humans. Further, we evaluated if testing with this novel platform enables earlier detection of insulin autoantibodies in individuals that have first-degree relatives with type-1 diabetes than currently used approaches. Longitudinal serum samples from participants were collected before and after they converted to become positive for insulin autoantibodies by the current standardly used assays. Using a novel plasmonic gold chip platform, we tested these samples for IgM isotype-specific autoantibodies. Serial serum samples from individuals without diabetes were also tested as a comparison control cohort. Our results demonstrate proof-of-concept that a plasmonic gold chip can specifically detect the IgM insulin autoantibody. Five out of the six individuals that converted to being positive for insulin autoantibodies by standard testing had significant IgM autoantibodies on the plasmonic chip platform. The plasmonic chip platform detected IgM autoantibodies earlier than standard testing by up to 4 years. Our results indicate that the plasmonic gold platform can specifically detect the IgM isotype autoantibodies and suggest that combining isotype-specific testing with currently used approaches enables earlier detection of insulin autoantibodies in individuals that have first-degree relatives with type 1 diabetes
