    The article describes an assessment tool which adult educators could use to measure professional competences acquired in the scope of their initial training. The developed instrument — a competence pass-serves objective competence identification and creation of competence profiles. Acceptance of competences by the European educational community enables a comparison of required and achieved professional skills and is the prerequisite for recognition and certification of the practitioners

    Inversion of stellar fundamental parameters from Espadons and Narval high-resolution spectra

    The general context of this study is the inversion of stellar fundamental parameters from high-resolution Echelle spectra. We aim indeed at developing a fast and reliable tool for the post-processing of spectra produced by Espadons and Narval spectropolarimeters. Our inversion tool relies on principal component analysis. It allows reduction of dimensionality and the definition of a specific metric for the search of nearest neighbours between an observed spectrum and a set of observed spectra taken from the Elodie stellar library. Effective temperature, surface gravity, total metallicity and projected rotational velocity are derived. Various tests presented in this study, and done from the sole information coming from a spectral band centered around the Mg I b-triplet and with spectra from FGK stars are very promising.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures (accepted A&A). arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1401.108

    Pulsation-Initiated Mass Loss in Luminous Blue Variables: A Parameter Study

    Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are characterized by semi-periodic episodes of enhanced mass-loss, or outburst. The cause of these outbursts has thus far been a mystery. One explanation is that they are initiated by kappa-effect pulsations in the atmosphere caused by an increase in luminosity at temperatures near the so-called ``iron bump'' (T ~ 200,000 K), where the Fe opacity suddenly increases. Due to a lag in the onset of convection, this luminosity can build until it exceeds the Eddington limit locally, seeding pulsations and possibly driving some mass from the star. We present some preliminary results from a parameter study focusing on the conditions necessary to trigger normal S-Dor type (as opposed to extreme eta-Car type) outbursts. We find that as Y increases or Z decreases, the pulsational amplitude decreases and outburst-like behavior, indicated by a large, sudden increase in photospheric velocity, becomes likes likely.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to be published in the Proceedings of Massive Stars as Cosmic Engines, IAU Symp 250, ed.     Excitation of stellar p-modes by turbulent convection: 1. Theoretical formulation

    Stochatic excitation of stellar oscillations by turbulent convection is investigated and an expression for the power injected into the oscillations by the turbulent convection of the outer layers is derived which takes into account excitation through turbulent Reynolds stresses and turbulent entropy fluctuations. This formulation generalizes results from previous works and is built so as to enable investigations of various possible spatial and temporal spectra of stellar turbulent convection. For the Reynolds stress contribution and assuming the Kolmogorov spectrum we obtain a similar formulation than those derived by previous authors. The entropy contribution to excitation is found to originate from the advection of the Eulerian entropy fluctuations by the turbulent velocity field. Numerical computations in the solar case in a companion paper indicate that the entropy source term is dominant over Reynold stress contribution to mode excitation, except at high frequencies.Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in A&

    Stimulation of Nicotiana tabacum pollen tube growth by γ-irradiation

    Irradiation of pollen grains from Nicotiana tabacum with 60Co-γ-irradiation in the dose range of 1–6Gy stimulates growth of the pollen tube up to 50% above control level. Further increase of the irradiation dose to 12Gy reduces pollen growth approximately to control level. Pollen tube growth was measured photometrically by determination of the turbidity of a suspension of the fragmented pollen tubes. The sensitivity of Nicotiana tabacum pollen to γ-irradiation is higher than that of pollen from pine and Douglas-fir. The biological and environmental implications are discussed

    HyperLoom possibilities for executing scientific workflows on the cloud

    We have developed HyperLoom - a platform for defining and executing scientific workflows in large-scale HPC systems. The computational tasks in such workflows often have non-trivial dependency patterns, unknown execution time and unknown sizes of generated outputs. HyperLoom enables to efficiently execute the workflows respecting task requirements and cluster resources agnostically to the shape or size of the workflow. Although HPC infrastructures provide an unbeatable performance, they may be unavailable or too expensive especially for small to medium workloads. Moreover, for some workloads, due to HPCs not very flexible resource allocation policy, the system energy efficiency may not be optimal at some stages of the execution. In contrast, current public cloud providers such as Amazon, Google or Exoscale allow users a comfortable and elastic way of deploying, scaling and disposing a virtualized cluster of almost any size. In this paper, we describe HyperLoom virtualization and evaluate its performance in a virtualized environment using workflows of various shapes and sizes. Finally, we discuss the Hyperloom potential for its expansion to cloud environments.61140639

    On the 2-categories of weak distributive laws

    A weak mixed distributive law (also called weak entwining structure) in a 2-category consists of a monad and a comonad, together with a 2-cell relating them in a way which generalizes a mixed distributive law due to Beck. We show that a weak mixed distributive law can be described as a compatible pair of a monad and a comonad, in 2-categories extending, respectively, the 2-category of comonads and the 2-category of monads. Based on this observation, we define a 2-category whose 0-cells are weak mixed distributive laws. In a 2-category K which admits Eilenberg-Moore constructions both for monads and comonads, and in which idempotent 2-cells split, we construct a fully faithful 2-functor from this 2-category of weak mixed distributive laws to K^{2 x 2}.Comment: 15 pages LaTeX source, final version to appear in Comm.
