There are numerous applications, of technological interest, where materials of quasi‐brittle behavior, as in the case of cement‐based composite materials, rocks and composites formed by the mixture of ceramics with other phases, are subjected to oscillating loads and suffer degradation of its properties. To develop analysis tools that allow to understand and to predict this degradation governing mechanisms is an opened problem in modern engineering. In this context, in the present work, it is used a version of the discrete element method formed by beams to explore its possibilities in simulating the degradation mechanisms that occur in quasi‐brittle materials when subjected to fatigue. Simulations over simple geometry test subjects are presented and several aspects of this problem are discussed and among the problems: it is explored the relationship between micro and macro mechanic parameters of the used model and how the scale effect is captured and influences this relationship. The presented preliminary results show the potentiality of the proposed methodology to understand the micro mechanisms of damage that occur in quasi‐brittle materials and also to predict its evolution.Peer Reviewe

    Get PDF
International audienceThermodynamic and dynamic atmospheric stability indices will be analysed in order to classify the rainfall types occurred in western Iberia and provide information about the associated meteorological phenomena and preferred regional instability sources. In this work, instability sources over the western Iberian Peninsula will be characterised by means of radiosonde station data and reanalysis data sets from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), for the period 1971?2002. Dynamic stability indices such as the Q vector divergence (dQ) or the potential vorticity anomaly in the 330 K isentropic surface (PV) have been calculated with the aim of establishing different atmospheric stability scenarios. Furthermore, thermodynamic atmospheric stability contribution has been also evaluated with Total Totals index (TT) and moisture availability was inferred from circulation weather types (CWTs). The first results of this work assess the combined dynamic-thermodynamic preferred conditions, synoptic situations and humidity sources, leading to precipitation events over the western Iberian Peninsula and prove the essential role of CWT patterns on the rainfall genesis

International audienceSynoptic situations producing rainfall at four rawinsonde observatories at eastern Spain are classified as stratiform or convective depending on dynamic and thermodynamic instability indices. Two daily radiosonde and daily-accumulated precipitation data from four observatories in Eastern Spain are used: Madrid-Barajas (MB), Murcia (MU), Palma de Mallorca (PA) and Zaragoza (ZA). We calculated two thermodynamic instability indices from radiosonde data: CAPE and LI. Likewise, from ERA40 reanalysis data we have calculated the Q vector divergence over the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands, as a parameter describing dynamical instability. Synoptic situations producing rainfall were classified as convective or stratiform, satisfying a criterion based on the values of dynamic and thermodynamic indices at each observatory. It is observed that the number of days with stratiform precipitation related to the total number of precipitation days follows a consistent annual pattern

A study by the lattice discrete element method for exploring the fractal nature of scale effects

Nowadays, there are many applications in the field of Engineering related to quasi-brittle materials such as ceramics, natural stones, and concrete, among others. When damage is produced, two phenomena can take place: the damage produced governs the collapse process when working with this type of material, and its random nature rules the nonlinear behavior up to the collapse. The interaction among clouds of micro-cracks generates the localization process that implies transforming a continuum domain into a discontinue one. This process also governs the size effect, that is, the changes of the global parameters as the strength and characteristic strain and energies when the size of the structure changes. Some aspects of the scaling law based on the fractal concepts proposed by Prof Carpinteri are analyzed in this work. On the other hand, the Discrete Method is an interesting option to be used in the simulation collapse process of quasi-brittle materials. This method can allow failures with relative ease. Moreover, it can also help to relax the continuum hypothesis. In the present work, a version of the Discrete Element Method is used to simulate the mechanical behavior of different size specimens until collapse by analyzing the size effect represented by this method. This work presents two sets of examples. Its results allow the researchers to see the connection between the numerical results regarding the size effect and the theoretical law based on the fractal dimension of the parameter studied. Two main aspects appear as a result of the analysis presented here. Understand better some aspects of the size effect using the numerical tool and show that the Lattice Discrete Element Method has enough robustness to be applied in the nonlinear analysis of structures built by quasi-brittle materials

Damage Evolution in Quasi-Brittle Materials: Experimental Analysis by AE and Numerical Simulation

This work investigates the extension of a total-collapse prediction method to include local failures in quasi-brittle materials as they undergo damage processes. The analysis is experimentally conducted with acoustic emission data from a basalt specimen under a prescribed displacement loading test. The proposed failure index is compared with the well-established b-value to evaluate its usefulness; the simulation results are also used to further investigations. In particular, the simulations show that the parameter calculation can be carried out by indirectly estimating the elastic energy released within the system throughout the damage process, which cannot be measured directly. It is concluded that the proposed method is valid, consistently outperforming the b-value as a failure precursor throughout the experimental studies

Modal analysis of the lysozyme protein considering all-atom and coarse-grained finite element models

Proteins are the fundamental entities of several organic activities. They are essential for a broad range of tasks in a way that their shapes and folding processes are crucial to achieving proper biological functions. Low-frequency modes, generally associated with collective movements at terahertz (THz) and sub-terahertz frequencies, have been appointed as critical for the conformational processes of many proteins. Dynamic simulations, such as molecular dynamics, are vastly applied by biochemical researchers in this field. However, in the last years, proposals that define the protein as a simplified elastic macrostructure have shown appealing results when dealing with this type of problem. In this context, modal analysis based on different modelization techniques, i.e., considering both an all-atom (AA) and coarse-grained (CG) representation, is proposed to analyze the hen egg-white lysozyme. This work presents new considerations and conclusions compared to previous analyses. Experimental values for the B-factor, considering all the heavy atoms or only one representative point per amino acid, are used to evaluate the validity of the numerical solutions. In general terms, this comparison allows the assessment of the regional flexibility of the protein. Besides, the low computational requirements make this approach a quick method to extract the protein’s dynamic properties under scrutiny

This paper presents a parametric study of the offset frontal impact on a bus, in which is assessed independently an influence of each variable involved in this accident type. The scenario of offset frontal impact is surely one of the most severe accidents involving buses, once the same has part of your lateral totally damaged and can leave a large number of victims. The numerical simulation model uses an explicit analysis formed by beams elements which uses elastic‐plastic constitutive law, which takes into account the influence of strain rate. With this model a parametric study of global variables that can characterize this type of scenario is realized. Also are evaluated qualitatively real accidents happened on Brazilian roads. The discussion is finally presented, and serves as a first step in the search for improvements to be made to the structures of the bus, aiming to minimize the damage.Peer Reviewe

Damage process in glass fiber reinforced polymer specimens using acoustic emission technique with low frequency acquisition

    Get PDF
The damage process in fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) has been the subject of continuous studies in recent decades using different approaches. In particular, the acoustic emission technique has been proved to be a powerful tool in the monitoring of structures of this type of material due to the large acoustic activity captured when this material is loaded to rupture. The present work explores several indexes that were calculated from the experimental recording of acoustic emission signals, and their efficiency in describing the failure process in structures. One of these indexes, called c value, is originally proposed, and its sensibility it is compared with other classical parameters that are usually employed in the Acoustic Emission analysis. A 3-point bending test has been performed on a glass fiber reinforced polymer plate. Our own methodology was proposed to identify AE signals in semi-automatic manner. This methodology also allowed a faster analysis of the global parameters during the process data of the AE test. The global parameter evolution obtained from the acoustic emission data during the damage process could be considered as precursors of the more meaningful event and as an aid to understand in which way the structure is going to the collapse

Truss-like Discrete Element Method Applied to Damage Process Simulation in Quasi-Brittle Materials

This paper discusses the combined application of the lattice discrete element method (LDEM) and the acoustic emission (AE) technique to analyze damage in quasi-brittle materials. These methods were used to study the damage in a concrete slab under pure-shear stress and a pre-fissured sandstone beam subjected to three-point bending. The first test was restricted to simulation results, whereas the second included experimental data. The discrete element method was used to perform the simulations for both tests, whereas the corresponding results and the information from the experiments were assessed using AE analysis tools. It was shown that the synergistic use of these two methods led to a comprehensive understanding of the two analyzed cases and offered an effective, generalizable approach for assessing damage processes in quasi-brittle materials
