Vertex Corrections on the Anomalous Hall Effect in Spin-polarized Two-dimensional Electron Gases with Rashba Spin-orbit Interaction

We study the effect of disorder on the intrinsic anomalous Hall (AH) conductivity in a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas with a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction. We find that AH conductivity vanishes unless the lifetime is spin-dependent, similar to the spin Hall (SH) conductivity in the non-magnetic system. In addition, we find that the SH conductivity does not vanish in the presence of magnetic scatterers. We show that the SH conductivity can be controlled by changing the amount of the magnetic impurities.Comment: Tex file only, no figure

We examined estrogen receptor (ER) mRNA expression and molecular subtypes in stage I-III breast cancers that are progesterone receptor (PR) positive but ER and HER2 negative by immunohistochemistry (IHC) or fluorescent in situ hybridization. The ER, PR, and HER2 status was determined by IHC as part of routine clinical assessment (N = 501). Gene expression profiling was done with the Affymetrix U133A gene chip. We compared expressions of ESR1 and MKI67 mRNA, distribution of molecular subtypes by the PAM50 classifier, the sensitivity to endocrine therapy index, and the DLDA30 chemotherapy response predictor signature among ER/PR-positive (n = 223), ER-positive/PR-negative (n = 73), ER-negative/PR-positive (n = 20), and triple-negative (n = 185) cancers. All patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy with an anthracycline and taxane and had adjuvant endocrine therapy only if ER or PR > 10 % positive. ESR1 expression was high in 25 % of ER-negative/PR-positive, in 79 % of ER-positive/PR-negative, in 96 % of ER/PR-positive, and in 12 % of triple-negative cancers by IHC. The average MKI67 expression was significantly higher in the ER-negative/PR-positive and triple-negative cohorts. Among the ER-negative/PR-positive patients, 15 % were luminal A, 5 % were Luminal B, and 65 % were basal like. The relapse-free survival rate of ER-negative/PR-positive patients was equivalent to ER-positive cancers and better than the triple-negative cohort. Only 20-25 % of the ER-negative/PR-positive tumors show molecular features of ER-positive cancers. In this rare subset of patients (i) a second RNA-based assessment may help identifying the minority of ESR1 mRNA-positive, luminal-type cancers and (ii) the safest clinical approach may be to consider both adjuvant endocrine and chemotherapy

SPIN INJECTION INTO FERROMAGNETIC METAL FROM HEAVY METAL OWING TO SPIN HALL EFFECT

When a current flows through a heavy metal (HM), the spin of the current carriers is polarized by the spin Hall effect (SHE). In a junction of a HM and a ferromagnetic metal (FM), the spin current flows into the FM from the HM and gives spin-transfer torque to the magnetic moments of the FM. We calculate the spin current in a layer of HM/FM with the SHE. We use a spin-resolved electrochemical potential including the SHE in the calculation of the spin current. The spin current flowing into the FM depends strongly on the thickness of the HM.This work was supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number JP20H0260

Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) in Colorectal Cancer - Prognostic Significance of Portal Blood Level -

The prognostic significance of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) values in the drainage vein of the tumor (portal blood levels of CEA) of colorectal cancer patients were evaluated by examining the correlation with the peripheral blood levels of CEA and histopathologic findings of the tumor. 1) Portal blood levels of CEA were significantly increased by the operative procedure. Mean values of CEA in portal blood were higher than those in peripheral blood. Portal blood CEA was correlated with Dukes\u27 staging, and revealed higher positive rates than CEA in peripheral blood in each stage. Elevated CEA levels were noted in those who had cancer infiltration extending through the proper muscle layer. There was a close correlation between portal CEA and CEA content in cancerous tissue (ng/g, wet weight) (p<0.05), but no significant correlation between peripheral CEA level and cancerous tissue CEA (r = 0.372). The mean values of portal CEA in aneuploidy were significantly higher than those in diploidy. These findings indicate that circulating CEA in peripheral blood might be influenced by the metabolic process of CEA in the liver as well as cancer progression rather than CEA production of the tumor. 2) The 5 year survival rate of the patient\u27s group with a negative rate of portal CEA (93%) was far better than that with a positive rate (57%). This study suggested that the portal blood level of CEA in colorectal carcinoma may be very useful for assessment of the patient\u27s survival

DEPTH-DEPENDENCE OF MAGNETIZATION AT A FERROMAGNET EDGE UNDER THE INTERFACIAL DZYALOSHINSKII-MORIYA INTERACTION

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (I-DMI) occurs in a ferromagnetic wire on a heavy metal. Magnetic moments (MMs) at the edge of the wire are forcibly canted by the I-DMI. The influence of the canting MM at the wire edge on the wire interior is unclear. Here, we theoretically investigate the MMs under the I-DMI. The effect of the canting of MMs at the edge of the interior is shown to increase with a smaller exchange energy and a larger perpendicular anisotropy. A cosine of the cant angle of the MMs decreases exponentially with distance from the edge.We are grateful to the Kansai University Fund for Supporting Young Scholars 2019.研究課題「スピンホール効果によるスピン注入を用いたナノ磁石磁化反転の高速化に向けた研究

Cytoplasmic RASSF2A is a proapoptotic mediator whose expression is epigenetically silenced in gastric cancer

Gastric cancer cells often show altered Ras signaling, though the underlying molecular mechanism is not fully understood. We examined the expression profile of eight ras-association domain family (RASSF) genes plus MST1/2 and found that RASSF2A is the most frequently downregulated in gastric cancer. RASSF2A was completely silenced in 6 of 10 gastric cancer cell lines as a result of promoter methylation, and expression was restored by treating the cells with 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine. Introduction of RASSF2A into non-expressing cell lines suppressed colony formation and induced apoptosis. These effects were associated with the cytoplasmic localization of RASSF2A and morphological changes to the cells. Complementary DNA microarray analysis revealed that RASSF2A suppresses the expression of inflammatory cytokines, which may in turn suppress angiogenesis and invasion. In primary gastric cancers, aberrant methylation of RASSF2A was detected in 23 of 78 (29.5%) cases, and methylation correlated significantly with an absence of the lymphatic invasion, absence of venous invasion, absence of lymph node metastasis, less advanced stages, Epstein–Barr virus, absence of p53 mutations and the presence of the CpG island methylator phenotype-high. These results suggest that epigenetic inactivation of RASSF2A is required for tumorigenesis in a subset of gastric cancers
