    The concept of Itqan and its role in Muslim professional life

    Professional Ethics which concern one's conduct of behavior and practice when carrying out professional work needs Itqan. The word itqan is an Arabic word which has a close meaning to the English word pelfection. Islam as a perfect and comprehensive religion set the bases for quality work. The order, discipline, accuracy, beautiful work, well thought out tasks and justice are all part of quality Islamic work and performance. Quran as the final divine revelation from Allah provides a code of conduct for every believer and is the commandment and warrant for him to be committed in hislher work and be sincere about it [5]. Adhering to the Quranic teachings on itqan equips the Muslim professional an effective approach to problem-solving preceded by steady and thorough examination before undertaking an activity and enables the Muslim to tackle problems in an orderly and disciplined manner. This prompts us to the institutionalization of Codes of Conduct and Codes of Practice which are common in many professional bodies for their members to observe. This paper attempts to investigate the importance of this concept and its role in the Muslim life

    The way to ultrafast, high-throughput enantioseparations of bioactive compounds in liquid and supercritical fluid chromatography

    Until less than 10 years ago, chiral separations were carried out with columns packed with 5 or 3 μm fully porous particles (FPPs). Times to resolve enantiomeric mixtures were easily larger than 30 min, or so. Pushed especially by stringent requirements from medicinal and pharmaceutical industries, during the last years the field of chiral separations by liquid chromatography has undergone what can be defined a “true revolution”. With the purpose of developing ever faster and efficient method of separations, indeed, very efficient particle formats, such as superficially porous particles (SPPs) or sub-2 μm FPPs, have been functionalized with chiral selectors and employed in ultrafast applications. Thanks to the use of short column (1–2 cm long), packed with these extremely efficient chiral stationary phases (CSPs), operated at very high flow rates (5–8 mL/min), resolution of racemates could be accomplished in very short time, in many cases less than 1 s in normal-, reversed-phase and HILIC conditions. These CSPs have been found to be particularly promising also to carry out high-throughput separations under supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) conditions. The most important results that have been recently achieved in terms of ultrafast, high-throughput enantioseparations both in liquid and supercritical fluid chromatography with particular attention to the very important field of bioactive chiral compounds will be reviewed in this manuscript. Attention will be focused not only on the latest introduced CSPs and their applications, but also on instrumental modifications which are required in some cases in order to fully exploit the intrinsic potential of new generation chiral columns

    Persistence of carbofuran in two Malaysian soils

    Persistence of carbofuran in two Malaysian soils namely the Bagan Datoh and Labu soils was studied under laboratory conditions at a constant temperature of 30°C. Air-dried soil was sieved and then spiked with 10 µg g-1 of carbofuran at three different moisture levels, namely 100%, 90% and 60% field capacity. It was observed that the half-lives of carbofuran in the Labu soil samples (which are low in organic matter content) at 100%, 90% and 60% field capacity were 57.28, 38.51 and 115.52 days respectively. However the corresponding half-lives of carbofuran in the Bagan Datoh samples (which are high in organic matter content) at 100%, 90% and 60% field capacity were 192.54, 141.46 and 203.87 days respectively. The half-life recording of carbofuran in autoclaved Bagan Datoh and Labu soil samples were 147.5 days and 301.37 days respectively at 100% field capacity and at a constant temperature of 30°C. The degradation of carbofuran followed a first order kinetic reaction. The results of this study showed that soil moisture content, micro-organisms and the organic matter content (OM) affected the degradation of carbofuran in both soils studied

    Study on the downward movement of carbofuran in two Malaysian soils

    The downward movement of carbofuran in two Malaysian soil types was studied using soil columns. The columns were filled with disturbed and undisturbed soils of either the Bagan Datoh soil (clay) or the Labu soil (sandy clay). The average total percentage of carbofuran in the leachate of the undisturbed Labu soil after 14 days of watering (80.8%) was approximately similar to that of the total amount from the disturbed soil (81.4%). However, carbofuran leaching was observed in the disturbed soil after the fourth day of watering whereas for the undisturbed soil, leaching occurred after the first watering. A similar trend was observed in the Bagan Datoh soil where the residue of carbofuran was detected after the first day of watering in the undisturbed soil column but only at the eighth day of watering in the disturbed soil column. The total percentage carbofuran in the leachate of disturbed and undisturbed soil columns from Bagan Datoh after 14 days of watering was 3.6% and 41.7%, respectively. The study showed that less leaching occurred in soil columns with high organic content such as the Bagan Datoh soil and especially so in disturbed soils where the organic matter was homogeneously mixed in all layers

    Design and development of plasma antenna for wi-fi application

    The term plasma is often referred to as the fourth state of matter. When sufficient ionized, plasma can be a conductor element. Plasma antenna is a type of radio antenna that represents the use of ionized gas as a conducting medium instead of metal conductors. The main objective in this research is to design plasma antenna at 2.4 GHz by using commercial fluorescent tube. In this work the commercial fluorescent lamp was chosen because it was low cost to produce plasma element. The plasma antenna in this research was made from fluorescent lamp that functioned as a radiating element with target frequency at 2.4 GHz for Wi-Fi application. The commercial fluorescent lamp consisted of argon gas and mercury vapor with a diameter of 28 mm and a length 589.8 mm. The result showed that a fluorescent tube, can be used to work as a plasma antenna for Wi-Fi application.Keywords: plasma antenna; plasma element; coupling sleeve; Wi-fi applicatio

    Glucose detection in blood using near-infrared spectroscopy: significant wavelength for glucose detection

    World Health Organization (WHO) stated in 2004, about 347 million people suffered from diabetes and from this statistic, about 3.4 million died from the complication of kidney failure, heart attack, body part amputation and adequately reported suffered from blindness. There are several non-invasive techniques in measuring the blood glucose level developed nowadays and among the popular technique is the near-infrared (NIR) measurement, ultrasonic sensor implementation, multisensory systems, absorbance of transmittance, bio-impedance, voltage intensity, and thermography. Among these techniques, there are several approaches that displayed a lot of potential, nonetheless some of them have produced unsatisfying results. The NIR technique has been applied in some of previous research, however the wavelength used vary for different researcher. There are several points of views on the significant wavelength range that contains suitable information regarding the peaks of glucose in blood. This paper is focusing on the experimental data collection using the near-infrared spectroscopy technique. This paper furthermore discussing on determine the significant peaks of glucose that is suitable to be used as the indicator of the glucose in blood. The highest significant peaks of blood glucose detected from the range around 1450nm and 1930nm

    Co-curricular management practices among novice teachers in Malaysia

    This article aims to identify the level of knowledge and preparedness among novice teachers in the implementation of co-curricular activities in secondary schools in the state of Kedah, Malaysia.A total of 162 novice teachers deployed to teach in secondary schools throughout the state of Kedah answered the questionnaire completely.The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and statistical inference including mean, percentage, independent samples t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation.The results, based on six different academic disciplines, show that novice teachers in the humanities, sciences and technical were higher than novice teachers of language areas in the level of knowledge in managing as well as their willingness to plan teaching and learning co-curricular activities in school.A comparison of novice teachers based on gender showed that there was no significant difference between male and female teachers related to level of knowledge and preparedness in managing co-curricular activities. The Pearson correlation analysis showed positive and significant correlation between teachers' readiness in planning teaching and learning and the teachers’ knowledge in managing co-curricular activities.Furthermore, novice teachers who had attended the extra-curricular course during the first degree acquired higher levels of knowledge in managing extra-curricular activities after teaching in schools

    Tolerance of High Inorganic Mercury of Perna Viridis : Laboratory Studies of Its Accumulation, Depuration and Distribution

    The tolerance of Perna Viridis to a high inorganic mercury (Hg) exposure was determined based on its accumulation, depuration and distribution. The Hg accumulation of the mussel was conducted for a 4-day semi-static exposure at a \u2018very\u2019 high Hg concentration (100 \u3bcg/L). None of the mussels died after the experimental period, indicating that the elevated level of inorganic Hg exposure was not toxic to P. viridis. Following the 4-day exposure, the Hg concentrations were higher in the gill and byssus than in the mantle, foot, gonad and muscle (with bioconcentration factor values being between 13 and 625). The Hg distribution among the different soft tissues after 11 days of depuration was almost similar with that after Hg exposure. The high Hg levels found in the byssus and different soft tissues after the depuration indicated that Hg accumulated in the different ST was tightly bound to metallothionein and it was not easily mobilized. The Hg distribution in the byssus and in the different soft tissues could be due to their differing capacities for Hg accumulation and depuration. Since the soft tissues of P. viridis can accumulate inorganic Hg in high concentrations after exposing to a \u2018very\u2019 high level of inorganic Hg, it has a high bioaccumulative capability and a high tolerance to inorganic Hg. The mussel byssus was found to have the highest depuration rate coefficient, indicating that it could act as one of the excretion routes for Hg and it can be proposed as a sensitive biomonitoring material for Hg. The fecal materials released by the mussel had elevated levels of Hg, indicating that the mussels acted as a Hg retention mechanism in the coastal ecosystem
