A Survey Of Teacher and Student Beliefs in Singapore's Polytechnics

Abstract: Language teaching has been focused mainly on teachers' classroom actions and behaviours and their effects on learners. It is acknowledged that teacher knowledge and beliefs form the underlying framework guiding a teacher's classroom practices. However, not to be ignored are learners' beliefs about teaching and learning which influence how they approach learning. Thus, teachers need to be informed about learners' beliefs so that they can better understand and manage their teaching as well as their students learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate similarities and differences between teachers' and students' beliefs. Sixty-two English language teachers and 164 students from the four polytechnics in Singapore participated in the study. Data for this study came from these teachers' and students' responses to a survey questionnaire designed to elicit information about some aspects of their beliefs. In this paper, we will report on some pedagogically interesting differences in certain areas of teachers' and students' beliefs (e.g., What constitutes good teachers/learners, why learners fail to learn English). We will also discuss the implications of these differences for language teaching and learning.

Isolated knee pain as a presentation for proximal femur fracture in paediatrics

Proximal femur fracture in paediatric patients are very rare and can easily be missed especially when the history of trauma is so trivial, and associated with pathological fracture. We report a case of 6-year-old girl with a history of left knee pain following a fall from a height of 2 feet. She was treated as a soft tissue injury of the left knee as the left knee radiograph was normal. She was reassessed at day 3 of injury with worsening symptoms. Radiograph of the pelvis and left knee revealed a comminuted intertrochanteric fracture of left femur with an underlying bone cyst. We would like to highlight this case report to avoid missing a proximalfemur fracture where a trivial trauma resulted In the presentation of a non-specific knee pain. Femur fracture in peadiatric age group can result in the significant complication of growth such as osteoporosis

Motion deformation style control technique for 3D humanoid character by using MoCap data

    Get PDF
Realistic humanoid 3D character movement is very important to apply in the computer games, movies, virtual reality and mixed reality environment. This paper presents a technique to deform motion style using Motion Capture (MoCap) data based on computer animation system. By using MoCap data, natural human action style could be deforming. However, the structure hierarchy of humanoid in MoCap Data is very complex. This method allows humanoid character to respond naturally based on user motion input. Unlike existing 3D humanoid character motion editor, our method produces realistic final result and simulates new dynamic humanoid motion style based on simple user interface control. © 2016 Penerbit UTM Press. Isolation and purification of membrane-bound cytochrome c from Proteus mirabilis

    Get PDF
In the present studies, respiratory chain pathogenic bacterium, Proteus mirabilis, was investigated. In the first phase, growth profile study was performed to optimize the P. mirabilis growth. Maximum bacterial growth could be obtained between 10 – 12 h of culturing time. Down-stream processing was performed by using sonication, ultracentrifugation and detergent solubilization techniques. Partially purified respiratory contents were analyzed spectrophotometrically. Pyridine-ferrochrome and redoxspectra showed the presence of heme-c

Fuzzy Soft Shadow in Augmented Reality Systems

    Get PDF
Realistic soft shadows in Augmented Reality (AR) is a fascinating topic in computer graphics. Many researchers are involved to have a significant improvement on this demand. In this paper, we have presented a new technique to produce soft shadows using one of the well-known methods in mathematics called Fuzzy Logic. Fuzzy logic is taken into account to generate the realistic soft shadows in AR. The wide light source is split into some parts that each of them plays the rule of a single light source. The desired soft shadow is generated by splitting the wide light source into multiple parts and considering each part as a single light source. The method which we called Fuzzy Soft Shadow is employed in AR to enhance the quality of semi-soft shadows and soft shadows

THE EFFECT OF ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE, ELECTRICITY AND WATER ON THE GROWTH OF GROSS REGIONAL DOMESTIC PRODUCTS IN GOWA DISTRICT, SOUTH SULAWESI PROVINCE

This study aims to: (1) Know the road infrastructure has a positive and significant effect on GDP growth in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi Province (2) Knowing the electricity infrastructure has a positive and significant effect on GDP growth in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi Province positive and significant impact on GRDP growth in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi Province (4) Knowing which factors predominantly affect GDP in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi Province. Data processing techniques using multiple linear regression through SPSS version 16. This research uses quantitative research methods and is processed with the needs of the model used. The results showed that simultaneously the road, electricity and water variables had a positive and significant effect on GDP growth in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi Province. Partially roads, electricity and water have a positive and significant effect on GDP growth in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi Province

Second trimester uterine rupture: lesson learned

    Get PDF
ntroduction: Uterine rupture is a rare obstetrics catastrophic especially if it occurs during early pregnancy. We experienced three cases of ruptured uterus in the second trimester that first line doctors and obstetrician could learn lessons from. Objectives: To study the presentations and outcome of uterine rupture in the second trimester. Methodology: A retrospective review of uterine rupture in Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan from the 1st of April 2010 to the 1st of April 2011. Data obtained from case records, histopathological and autopsy reports. Result: There were 3 cases of uterine rupture. First case, uterine rupture at 15 weeks post sexual intercourse, undiagnosed until postmortem. Second case: ruptured uterus at 24 week diagnosed at laparotomy with the indication of failed medical termination for fetal anomaly. Third case: ruptured uterus at 21 weeks following abdominal massage with initial diagnosis of acute gastroentritis. The final diagnosis was ruptured uterus secondary to placenta percreta, related to medical induction and interstitial pregnancy respectively. Conclusion: Rupture uterus should be considered with or without any risk factors regardless of the gestational age whenever any impression of hemoperitoneum. Intensive surgical method would be needed for accurate diagnosis and immediate management even in early pregnancy is a life saving

Adverse drug reaction with midazolam use in Emergency Department

    Get PDF
Midazolam is one of the most commonly used drugs for sedation in Emergency Department (ED). This was a retrospective study conducted on 380 patients from December 2012 to May 2014 in ED of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC). The objective was to elicit the frequency of side effects and correlation to various factors i.e. socio-demography, co-morbidities, age groups and underlying illnesses. Out of 380 patients, 35 patients experienced side effects (20 patients with midazolam alone, 15 patients with combination of drugs). The average age was 42 years and the average dose of midazolam was 3.5mg. The most common other drug combined was fentanyl. The overall complication rate for midazolam was 5.3%. The most common side effect recorded was excessive somnolence (1.6%). Other side effects included local skin reactions (1.1%), vomiting (0.8%), headache (0.8%) and hypotension (0.5%). There was no significant association between the socio-demographic factors and drugs combination with the side effects of midazolam on patients. It was concluded that midazolam was a safe drug due to absence of any life-threatening side effects. There are possibilities that most side effects recorded could be caused by other comfounding factors e.g. underlying injuries or disease and combination with other drugs
