    Get PDF
Abstract: Floods are frequent events occur in Malaysia and cause loss of life, human suffering and widespread damages to buildings, crops and infrastructure. Effort to understanding on this phenomenon is an interesting research. The objectives of this study are to determine the stage-discharge relationship, roughness coefficient and streamwise velocity distribution in a vegetated straight compound channel. The effects of two-line emergent vegetation along the edge of floodplain are studied by using a flume in the Hydraulics Laboratory, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The results on stage-discharge relationship, Manning’s n and velocity distribution for overbank flows are presented in this paper. From the analysis, it is found that the vegetation influences stage-discharge where retardation of flow takes place. The maximum velocity zone is observed to be in the main channel and less fluid momentum transfer takes place in the presence of vegetation. Vegetated floodplain also influence the increases of channel roughness

We report on an investigation of the magnetic properties of nanocomposite ferrite via different technique. Magnetic hard and soft ferrite, SrFe12O19/ Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanocomposites with mass ratio 4:1 were synthesised by using the mechanical alloying (750 rpm) method, physical mixing and high energy ball milling method. The nanocomposite ferrite was calcined at different temperatures from 500°C to 800°C to study the effect of calcination temperature on the magnetic properties of nanocomposite ferrite. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) result shows the double phase SrFe12O19 and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 existed. The Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) image shows the particlesize is agglomerated, due to the attractive force. The magnetisation measurement was obtained at room temperature by using a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). For mixing by mechanical alloying, nanocomposite ferrite at 800°C gives the larger value of magnetisation, Ms 46 emu/g which is higher than the Ms of a single phase of SrFe12O19, 37 emu/g. The remanence ratio, Mr/Ms of nanocomposite ferrite at 800°C gives the value more than 0.5, this proves that the exchange coupling exists with the higher value of Ms. For physical mixing, the highest magnetisation obtains are 51 emu/g at a temperature of 750°C. From this simple technique, we are able to attain good magnetic properties of nanocomposite ferrite nanoparticles with a particle size below 50 nm

Our study empirically examines the effect of student activities on Facebook and religion on academic performance. We extend prior research in this area in a number of ways. First, given the paucity of the research in this area particularly from the Asian context, we provide the evidence from developing country like Malaysia. Second, our sample drawn from Sultan Idris Education University in Malaysia, where graduates from these universities are unique since they are expected to be able to work in both education and industry environment, and presumed to play significant roles in shaping the development of future student’s intellectual at the Malaysian secondary school and Malaysian economy in general. Third, we control for religiosity aspect when examining the association between Facebook and academic performance, something that has been predominantly neglected by the prior studies. Fourth, unlike prior studies that circulating around the Christian sphere in measuring religiosity, we provide evidence from the Islamic perspective where the act of worships and practices are much more comprehensive rather than the Christian counterparts. Fifth, we examine whether Facebook activities and religiosity are complementary or substitutive each other in improving student’s academic performance. Our sample comprise of 60 undergraduates. Our result exhibit that students with high number of friends on Facebook and frequent engagement on Facebook activities, such as sharing links, send message, posting photo, tagging video as well as spending long hours on Facebook generally are associated with lower academic performance. Our results also reported that student’s engagement in religious activities promotes better academic performance. When we examine the potential interaction effect between Facebook and religiosity, our result revealed that religiosity is effective in reducing student’s interest on Facebook, hence lead to better academic achievement. In other words, religious student will be less interested in joining activities on Facebook and make them more perform than their counterparts. Our findings from this study should be able to assist the university management in shaping university policies and curriculum to regulate and manage student’s activities in order to enhance overall student’s quality. Moreover, the findings from this study are also of use to the policy maker such as Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commissions to regulate the policy on the student’s access and activities on Facebook

Learning difficulties in Mathematics causes students to struggle with the numbers, formulas, calculations, concepts and related shapes because it takes student’s patience and persistence. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the learning difficulties encountered by students in ‘Shape and Space’ topic. The contributing factors for such difficulties are also studied. Forty Standard Two (2) students from a primary schools in Kuala Selangor participated in this case study. Purposive sampling technique is used in this study. It was found that there are a few difficulties and its contributing factors encountered by the respondents. A test and semistructured interview were the instruments used for the data collection. The research findings show that 70% of the respondents are having difficulty in understanding and answering the questions related to the subtopics involving types of straight and curved surfaces, and the number of shape surfaces. Additionally, 80% of the respondents are having difficulty in the subtopic of 3-dimensional stretch of shape and how to draw them. The difficulties faced by the students are because of the inability to imagine the shape and the stretch (imagination), and inability to understand the stretch of the combined basic shape. Therefore, this study proposes the steps and initiatives for teachers in planning suitable learning activities to help the students in overcoming their difficulties
