Massive glosso-cervical arteriovenous malformation: the rationale for a challenging surgical resection
Massive arterivenous malformations (AVM) in the cervico-facial area are rare but potentially life-threatening.
Treatment protocols are not well-established. A 41-year old man presented large painless rubber-like mass within
the entire neck, which also extended intraorally through the floor of the mouth, showing a slow growing pattern
for 5 years. Angiography diagnosed it as cervicofacial AVM. Treatment approach consisted on the embolization
of the right upper thyroid, lingual and facial arteries under intravenous sedation. Three days later, bilateral radical
neck dissection and subtotal glossectomy was performed. A musculo-cutaneous pectoralis major pedicled flap was
harvested to reconstruct the floor of the mouth. Treatment of massive AVMs in the cervico-facial area is challenging due to the associated disfigurement and frequent recurrence rate due to incomplete resection. Also, massive
bleeding may be present despite pre-operative super-selective embolization. A new case is presented with focus on
surgical treatment considerations

The European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics Policy Statement No. 10.1: Recommended Guidelines on National Schemes for Continuing Professional Development of Medical Physicists
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is vital to the medical physics profession if it is to embrace the pace of change occurring in medical practice. As CPD is the planned acquisition of knowledge, experience and skills required for professional practice throughout one's working life it promotes excellence and protects the profession and public against incompetence. Furthermore, CPD is a recommended prerequisite of registration schemes (Caruana et al. 2014 [1]; [2]) and is implied in the Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM (EU BSS) [3] and the International Basic Safety Standards (BSS) [4]. It is to be noted that currently not all national registration schemes require CPD to maintain the registration status necessary to practise medical physics. Such schemes should consider adopting CPD as a prerequisite for renewing registration after a set period of time. This EFOMP Policy Statement, which is an amalgamation and an update of the EFOMP Policy Statements No. 8 and No. 10, presents guidelines for the establishment of national schemes for CPD and activities that should be considered for CPD
Nutritional regulation of glucose-6-phosphatase gene expression in liver of the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata)
To examine the role of glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) in glucose homeostasis in the diabeteslike experimental model of carnivorous fish, we analysed postprandial variations and the effect of starvation, ration size and diet composition on the regulation of G6Pase expression at the enzyme activity and mRNA level in the liver of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata ). G6Pase expression increased in long-term starved or energy-restricted fish. In contrast to data reported for other fish species, short-term regulation of G6Pase expression was found in regularly fed S. aurata. G6Pase mRNA levels were lowest between 4 and 15 h after food intake, whereas minimal enzyme activity was observed 10-15 h postprandially. Alterations of plasma glucose levels affect G6Pase in mammals. However, the carbohydrate content of the diet did not affect hepatic expression of G6Pase in S. aurata, suggesting that a different molecular mechanism is involved in the control of G6Pase expression in fish. Although G6Pase was unaffected, highcarbohydrate low-protein diets increased glucokinase (GK) expression and thus allowed a metabolic adaptation favouring glycolysis over gluconeogenesis. Interestingly, only the nutritional conditions that promoted variations in the blood glucose levels resulted in changes in the hepatic expression of G6Pase. These findings indicate a concerted regulation of G6Pase and GK expression and suggest that the direction and rate of the glucose-glucose-6-phosphate substrate cycle flux is finely regulated in the liver of S. aurata, challenging the role attributed to deficient regulation of G6Pase or GK expression in the low ability of carnivorous fish to metabolize glucose
Oestrid myiasis in European Mouflon from Spain
From February 1992 to March 1997, 245 European mouflon (Ovis orientalis musimon) from Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park (southern Spain) were surveyed for oestrid larvae in order to estimate prevalence and mean intensity of parasitism by Oestrus ovis. Over 46 percent of the animals surveyed were infected, with a mean intensity of 9.6 larvae/host parasitized. No significant differences in prevalence rates between host sexes were observed, but older mouflons were infected with more larvae than younger ones.Peer Reviewe
