The research explains about workplace reform, aimed at improving productivity of General Affairs and Policy Planning department of Seiyo officeby changing management through the user participation workshop at 4th floor of Seiyo city office and on the changes of workplace reform. The purpose of this research is to find the changes that are worker's behaviour and worker’s awareness of workplace through workplace reform. The researchers surveyed changes, worker's behaviour and worker's awareness of workplace using workplace reform at 4th floor of Seiyo office as case study. In workplace reform, in order to create a place where new work style can be practiced, the researchers conducted the user participation workshops with workers a total of 6 times. Through the workshops, concept of work style and plan of renovation were proposed. In addition, the researchers did a survey using two methods which were a set of questionnaire and 3 observationsthat is before the workplace renovation, 3 months after the renovation, and 1 year and 3 months after the renovation. The findings obtained from the questionnaire in the first three months after the renovation showed that the opinions of the workers were divided between pros and cons against workplace reform. However, the survey of 1 year and three months after the renovation showed that almost all workers are satisfied with the new environment. In addition, the researchers found that a positive correlation exist between participation rate of workshops and the satisfaction level. The findings suggest the worth of workshops for workplace reform. In the Observation Survey, the workers needed to select a place freely where they can work comfortably after the workplace reform. For example, they chose to work in refresh space. In addition, the findings from the survey showed that the floor became livelier when the participation rate increses at that workplace. Additionally, the participants became more conscious of the work style such as features of work style, after workplace renovation; they are able to clearly differentiate between short intermittent works separated by conversation and phone and personal work on concentration

Graduate school programs are short term, so it is important for first-year graduate students to adapt to the environment as soon as they begin their first semester. As part of peer support activities, we conducted support group activities to assist in early adaptation of new graduate students. In this paper, we examined the effect of the support group. We found that the first-year graduate students who joined the support group had reduced negative emotions (POMS shortened version) such as anxiety, fatigue, confusion, and depression. In addition, depression in students transferring from other universities was reduced and the sense of belonging to the university had increased

Conservation of ecosystem engineers, which modulates the surrounding habitat by causing physical state changes in biotic or abiotic materials, is important for maintaining the functional integrity of ecosystems. This study examined the effects of endangered freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera laevis and M. togakushiensis) on channel morphology and flow in a low-gradient sandy river. For this, we performed a field removal experiment of mussels using three treatments in twelve 10-m reaches. Mussel abundance and biomass, and three physical variables were measured before, immediately after, and two months to one year after the treatments. Mussel removal resulted in channel degradation with a 60% increase in flow depth, a 30% decrease in current velocity, and a 50% reduction in the width-to-depth ratio two months after the treatments, whereas minimal changes were measured in reaches with mussels. The results indicated that pearl mussels act as an ecosystem engineer affecting the channel morphology and flow of sandy rivers. The conservation of the pearl mussel populations is key to preserving their far-reaching benefits in ecosystem integrity including habitats for other various organisms

Requirement of Apelin-Apelin Receptor System for Oxidative Stress-Linked Atherosclerosis

The recently identified endogenous peptide apelin and its specific apelin receptor (APJ) are currently being considered as potential regulators in vascular tissue. Previously, we reported apelin mediates phosphorylation of myosin light chain and elicits vasoconstriction in vascular smooth muscle. In this study, physiological roles of the apelin-APJ system were investigated on atherosclerosis. In APJ and apolipoprotein E double-knockout (APJ−/−ApoE−/−) mice fed a high-cholesterol diet, atherosclerotic lesions were dramatically reduced when compared with APJ+/+ ApoE−/− mice, in the absence of an effect of cholesterol levels. Immunohistochemical detection of smooth muscle cells, using a smooth muscle α-actin antibody, showed greatly reduced staining for these cells in lesions of APJ−/−ApoE−/− mice fed a high-cholesterol diet. Vascular production of superoxide radicals and the expression of nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase subunits were decreased in APJ−/−ApoE−/− mice compared with APJ+/+ApoE−/− mice fed a standard normal diet. In vascular smooth muscle cells, apelin induced nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase subunit expression. Apelin also induced vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, which was inhibited by superoxide dismutase or diphenylene iodonium. The apelin-APJ system is a mediator of oxidative stress in vascular tissue, and thus we propose it to be a critical factor in atherogenesis under high-cholesterol dietary conditions. APJ deficiency is preventative against oxidative stress-linked atherosclerosis
