    Este tema enquadra-se no âmbito de um projeto de doutoramento, desenvolvido através do Centro de Formação de Professores da UFRB/Brasil, enquadrado na área temática - Educação, Desenvolvimento e Expressões Artísticas. Propõe atividades vinculadas ao estudo da Cultura corporal, a partir das práticas culturais do recôncavo baiano, na formação de pessoas com deficiência/doença mental e/ou em situação de risco social e pessoal, com intuito de responder às dificuldades e perspetivas da ação pedagógica, considerando o impacto educativo da musicalidade, movimento corporal e a dinamica das relações interpessoais. Explora uma educação inclusiva a partir da reflexão sobre alternativas no trato com a capoeira, samba, maculele, entre outras, para melhoria de questões que variam desde a cognição até de auto-estima e identitárias, consignadas numa proposta de implementação de uma atividade de enriquecimento curricular, em articulação com o currículo formal. Com este interesse foi traçada uma metodologia centrada numa perspectiva qualitativa, a partir de um estudo de caso, considerando a realidade de uma escola municipal. Assim, além de se observar significativos impactos na perspetiva de inclusão destas pessoas, promovem-se práticas culturais e articula-se pesquisa, ensino e extensão, garantindo o papel formativo e social da UFRB junto da comunidade da cidade de Amargosa e a possibilidade de experimentar uma intervenção pedagógica criativa inclusiva com estudantes de Educação.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

    Overview on the antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility of sputtered carbon-based coatings

    Due to their outstanding properties, carbon-based structures have received much attention from the scientific community. Their applications are diverse and include use in coatings on self-lubricating systems for anti-wear situations, thin films deposited on prosthetic elements, catalysis structures, or water remediation devices. From these applications, the ones that require the most careful testing and improvement are biomedical applications. The biocompatibility and antibacterial issues of medical devices remain a concern, as several prostheses still fail after several years of implantation and biofilm formation remains a real risk to the success of a device. Sputtered deposition prevents the introduction of hazardous chemical elements during the preparation of coatings, and this technique is environmentally friendly. In addition, the mechanical properties of C-based coatings are remarkable.     Physical vapor deposition technology in personal protective equipment production: improved antibacterial and hydrophobic character of textiles

    Personal protective equipment (PPE) has been adapted as biological threats have emerged, such as increasingly drug-resistant bacteria and the emergence of new viruses such as COVID-19. PPE must be increasingly resilient to prevent the proliferation of pathogens, but using sustainable raw materials and environmentally friendly technologies. The aim of this study is to show a new way of modifying the surface of various types of fabrics to enable their efficient use as PPE. The Ag/DLC coating was successfully deposited by sputtering onto several types of textiles using different chemical compositions of Ag/DLC (0, 8, 10, and 12Ag). As a crucial parameter, wettability was evaluated, showing that silver addition increases the hydrophobicity character of the coated fabrics, namely in cotton, changing from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity were evaluated on all coatings, revealing that they are efficient in eliminating the spread of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae) and pose no risk to the human body. The results presented here are promising in protecting healthcare workers, with the next steps being to study the efficiency of these coatings against viruses.     Systematic evaluation of the antioxidant potential of different parts of Foeniculum vulgare Mill. from Portugal

    Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) is a widespread perennial umbeliferous (Apiaceae) herb, traditionally used for medicinal purposes and human consumption. It is highly recommended for diabetes, bronchitis and chronic coughs, and for the treatment of kidney stones; some of those chronic diseases are related to the production of radical species involved in the oxidative stress. Therefore, the antioxidant potential of this herb might explain some of their empirical uses in folk medicine. This is the first time that a systematic study on different parts of fennel is performed, in order to understand differences in the antioxidant potential of shoots, leaves, steams, and inflorescences, particularly related to their composition in antioxidant compounds such as vitamins (ascorbic acid and tocopherols) and phenolics. The shoots seems to have the highest radical-scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation inhibition capacity (EC50 values < 1.4 mg/ml), which is in agreement with the highest content in phenolics (65.85 ± 0.74 mg/g) and ascorbic acid (570.89 ± 0.01 lg/g) found in this part. The shoots also revealed high concentration of tocopherols (34.54 ± 1.28 lg/g) and were the only part with flavonoids

    Lamiaceae often used in Portuguese folk medicine as a source of powerful antioxidants: vitamins and phenolics

    Three Lamiaceae often used in Portuguese folk medicine: Ground ivy (Glechoma hederaceae L.), oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. virens (Hoffmanns. & Link) Ietswaart) and mastic thyme (Thymus mastichina L.), revealed to be good sources of powerful antioxidants such as vitamins (ascorbic acid and tocopherols) and phenolics. The HPLC methodology developed for tocopherols analysis proved to be, after validation assays, sensitive and accurate. Ground ivy showed the highest levels of vitamins: ascorbic acid (168 2 mg/g dry weight) and tocopherols (3692 57 mg/g dry weight). The phenolics extraction was optimized using mastic tyme, and different conditions (water and ethanol:water 50% v/v, 30 min at 25 C and boiling temperature; ethanol and methanol, 24 h at 25 C). The best methodology (25 C, 50 ml of methanol, 24 h) was further applied to the other Lamiaceae. Oregano proved to have the highest radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibition capacity. Particularly, the very low EC50 value (0.01 mg/ml) obtained for TBARS inhibition in brain homogenates is very promising, considering that brain is highly sensitive to oxidative damage. Significantly negative linear correlations were observed between phenolics, including flavonoids, and antioxidant activity EC50 values of the three Lamiaceae

    Key aspects of cropping systems are described in terms of their impacts on soil, water and air resources. The importance of microbial symbiotic relations with crop plants are briefly considered in the context of nutrient resource use efficiency and the resilience of plants to biotic and abiotic stress. It is argued that cropping systems need to include crops with fibrous root systems and legumes in the rotation to ensure sustainable use of resources. Three series of experiments are discussed that considered how the efficacy of rhizobia and indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi could be enhanced in sustainable cropping systems. Evidence is presented to demonstrate that there are potential benefits to crop production from improved management of soil resources through the adoption of reduced tillage practices coupled with suitable crop rotation and weed control

    Hole-in-One Mutant Phenotypes Link EGFR/ERK Signaling to Epithelial Tissue Repair in Drosophila

    Background: Epithelia act as physical barriers protecting living organisms and their organs from the surrounding environment. Simple epithelial tissues have the capacity to efficiently repair wounds through a resealing mechanism. The known molecular mechanisms underlying this process appear to be conserved in both vertebrates and invertebrates, namely the involvement of the transcription factors Grainy head (Grh) and Fos. In Drosophila, Grh and Fos lead to the activation of wound response genes required for epithelial repair. ERK is upstream of this pathway and known to be one of the first kinases to be activated upon wounding. However, it is still unclear how ERK activation contributes to a proper wound response and which molecular mechanisms regulate its activation. Methodology/Principal Findings: In a previous screen, we isolated mutants with defects in wound healing. Here, we describe the role of one of these genes, hole-in-one (holn1), in the wound healing process. Holn1 is a GYF domain containing protein that we found to be required for the activation of several Grh and Fos regulated wound response genes at the wound site. We also provide evidence suggesting that Holn1 may be involved in the Ras/ERK signaling pathway, by acting downstream of ERK. Finally, we show that wound healing requires the function of EGFR and ERK signaling. Conclusions/Significance: Based on these data, we conclude that holn1 is a novel gene required for a proper wound healing response.
