On The Hecke Eigenforms of Half-Integral Weight and Dedekind-Eta Products

Systematic choice of the Hecke eigenforms of half-integral weight is an interesting problem in the theory of modular forms. In this paper, we find all Dedekind-eta products of half-integral weight which are Hecke eigenforms up to weight 15/2 with varying levels. Proof is based on the Shimura lift

Impact of the Context of Socioscientific Issues on Discourse Patterns Used in Science Classes

    Get PDF
This study is a qualitative study conducted to examine the effect of socioscientific issues (SSI) on discourse patterns used in the classroom. The research was conducted with four elementary science teachers working in a public school. The research was designed as case studies of these four teachers and data resources were video recordings of these teachers’ routine and SSI based lessons. The data was analyzed through discourse analysis. The discourse patterns used by teachers were examined in terms of adjacent the utterance, triadic, and chain discourse patterns. The results indicated that the discourse patterns used by the teachers in their routine lessons changed dramatically in the context of SSI and the chain discourse pattern came to the fore in the courses processed in the context of the SSI

The effect of brief mindfulness training on distress tolerance, heart rate variability and alcohol consumption

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the effectiveness of brief experimental mindfulness training in reducing alcohol craving and consumption in relation to distress tolerance and heart rate variability (HRV) among harmful/hazardous drinkers. Part one presents a literature review examining the effects of mindfulness on HRV. The review of 16 studies concluded that mindfulness is associated with HRV and increased HRV in a high frequency range was observed in both healthy individuals and in patient groups. Methodological limitations of the current literature and recommendations for future research are discussed. Part two is an empirical study involving a randomized controlled design examining the effects of brief mindfulness training on distress tolerance, heart rate variability and alcohol consumption. The results indicated that there was a significant increase in HRV in the relaxation group but no significant change in the mindfulness group. Participants who had increased HRV consumed less alcohol immediately after training, but interestingly only the participants in the mindfulness group consumed less alcohol after seven days. The increase in distress tolerance was similar between groups. This paper is part of a joint theses project with another Trainee Clinical Psychologist, Shirley Serfaty (2016). Her study involved a cue reactivity procedure to examine the effects of mindfulness on craving and negative affect. Part three provides a critical appraisal of the empirical study. It discusses methodological issues such as challenges with developing mindfulness/relaxation scripts, choice of behavioural and physiological measures and maintaining superior follow up rates. It also includes a brief discussion of my interest in the field of mindfulness and my experiences of conducting this research

Representations of the Nature of Scientific Knowledge in Turkish Biology Textbooks

    Get PDF
Considering the impact of textbooks on learning, this study set out to assess representations of the nature of scientific knowledge in Turkish 9th grade biology textbooks. To this end, the ten most commonly used 9th grade biology textbooks were analyzed. A qualitative research approach was utilized and the textbooks were analyzed using ethnographic content analysis. Results indicated that the majority of textbooks, despite recent science curriculum reforms in Turkey, failed to cover or present adequate information about the majority of the aspects of scientific knowledge considered in this study. The finding that the majority of textbooks reviewed in this study were misleading or had inadequate descriptions of science is worrying and has serious implications for promoting science literacy in Turkey. If the scientific literacy reform efforts of 2007 and 3013 are to be realized, these shortcomings must be addressed

Examining of the effects of aerobic dance and step dance exercises on some hematological parameters and blood lipids

    Get PDF
The aim of the study was to examine the the effects of aerobic and step dance exercises on hematological and blood lipids parameters. 32 university students were voluntarily participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to aerobic dance (N=16) and step dances (N=16). All groups were participated an hour aerobic or step dance exercise session 2 times in a week during 3 months. Wilcoxon Sign test was used to analyze pretest and posttest results of variables. As results, significant differences were found in the pre- and post-intervention scores for triglycerides (TC), red blood cell (RBC), and hematocrit (HCT) in Step dance group. Although there were decreases in triglycerides levels for both aerobic dance and step dance groups, only significant reduction was found in step dance group. Step dance exercises was better than aerobic dance in terms of increasing RBC and decreasing cholesterol, low density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol level. Aerobic dance exercises were better than step dance in terms of increasing high density lipoproteins (HDL). Moreover, when comparing the level of decreasing of Hemoglobin (HGB) significantly, aerobic dance group were better than step dance group. HCT increased significantly more in step dance group as compared with aerobic dance group. Step dance cause more increment than aerobic dance in terms of platetes (PLT) level. The data of this study indicates that step dance is more effective than aerobic dance in terms of decreasing LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and cholesterol for university students

Fracture toughness analysis of epoxy-recycled rubber-based composite reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets for structural applications in automotive and aeronautics

    Get PDF
This study proposes a new design of lightweight and cost-efficient composite materials for the aeronautic industry utilizing recycled fresh scrap rubber, epoxy resin, and graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs). After manufacturing the composites, their bending strength and fracture characteristics were investigated by three-point bending (3PB) tests. Halpin-Tsai homogenization adapted to composites containing GnPs was used to estimate the moduli of the composites, and satisfactory agreement with the 3PB test results was observed. In addition, 3PB tests were simulated by finite element method incorporating the Halpin-Tsai homogenization, and the resulting stress-strain curves were compared with the experimental results. Mechanical test results showed that the reinforcement with GnPs generally increased the modulus of elasticity as well as the fracture toughness of these novel composites. Toughening mechanisms were evaluated by SEM fractography. The typical toughening mechanisms observed were crack deflection and cavity formation. Considering the advantageous effects of GnPs on these novel composites and cost efficiency gained by the use of recycled rubber, these composites have the potential to be used to manufacture various components in the automotive and aeronautic industries as well as smart building materials in civil engineering applications

The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of usage of ‘’the physical activity cards’ on teacher behaviors to maintain students as physically active in Physical Education classes. Total 384 students (first, second and third grades elementary school students) and 24 teachers from 7 elementary schools from Mugla center were observed by SOFIT (System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time) is a direct systematic observation method. Pretest and posttest results of variables were analyzed by using Paired T test.It was found that physical activity cards have an effect on teachers’ behavior. Teachers motivated students to exercise in their class and they gave much lesser free time and they engaged much lesser other things during lesson time.As a result, the physical activity cards are useful materials for development of skill in physical education lessons. There will be positive improvements in physical activity levels, lesson context and teacher behavior if some factors like appropriate group size, enough materials and efficient class management of teachers would be make better.
