Paintings and Calligraphy of The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Yosa Buson
This paper looks at the artistic works of The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Yosa Buson (1716-1783). Three scrolls and one folding screen are extant. Buson completed these works, which were inspired by the famous prose and verse collection by Matsuo Basho (1644-1694), The Narrow Road to the Deep North, in the late 18th century, when a revival movement of Basho\u27s poetic style was flourishing. There has unfortunately been a dearth of serious or detailed academic discussion on the relationship between Buson\u27s paintings and his accompanying calligraphy. This research paper puts forward the proposition that these works differ from other artists\u27 output, with particular emphasis being placed on his "The Trio of Poetry Calligraphy Drawing" in the Edo Era. Through a painstaking examination of each work, this paper seeks to clarify how the composition of the paintings and the calligraphy help form a harmonious whole.東アジアの言語と表象 (East Asian languages and Representations
Derived categories of Burniat surfaces and exceptional collections
We construct an exceptional collection of maximal possible length
6 on any of the Burniat surfaces with , a 4-dimensional family of
surfaces of general type with . We also calculate the DG algebra of
endomorphisms of this collection and show that the subcategory generated by
this collection is the same for all Burniat surfaces.
The semiorthogonal complement of is an "almost
phantom" category: it has trivial Hochschild homology, and K_0(\mathcal

A construction of Calabi-Yaus as quotients of products of lower-dimensional
spaces in the context of weighted hypersurfaces is discussed, including
desingularisation. The construction leads to Calabi-Yaus which have a fiber
structure, in particular one case has K3 surfaces as fibers. These Calabi-Yaus
are of some interest in connection with Type II -heterotic string dualities in
dimension 4. A section at the end of the paper summarises this for the

Numerical Ricci-flat metrics on K3
We develop numerical algorithms for solving the Einstein equation on
Calabi-Yau manifolds at arbitrary values of their complex structure and Kahler
parameters. We show that Kahler geometry can be exploited for significant gains
in computational efficiency. As a proof of principle, we apply our methods to a
one-parameter family of K3 surfaces constructed as blow-ups of the T^4/Z_2
orbifold with many discrete symmetries. High-resolution metrics may be obtained
on a time scale of days using a desktop computer. We compute various geometric
and spectral quantities from our numerical metrics. Using similar resources we
expect our methods to practically extend to Calabi-Yau three-folds with a high
degree of discrete symmetry, although we expect the general three-fold to

Development of the analog ASIC for multi-channel readout X-ray CCD camera
We report on the performance of an analog application-specific integrated
circuit (ASIC) developed aiming for the front-end electronics of the X-ray
CCDcamera system onboard the next X-ray astronomical satellite, ASTRO-H. It has
four identical channels that simultaneously process the CCD signals.
Distinctive capability of analog-to-digital conversion enables us to construct
a CCD camera body that outputs only digital signals. As the result of the
front-end electronics test, it works properly with low input noise of =<30 uV
at the pixel rate below 100 kHz. The power consumption is sufficiently low of
about 150 mW/chip. The input signal range of 720 mV covers the effective energy
range of the typical X-ray photon counting CCD (up to 20 keV). The integrated
non-linearity is 0.2% that is similar as those of the conventional CCDs in
orbit. We also performed a radiation tolerance test against the total ionizing
dose (TID) effect and the single event effect. The irradiation test using 60Co
and proton beam showed that the ASIC has the sufficient tolerance against TID
up to 200 krad, which absolutely exceeds the expected amount of dose during the
period of operating in a low-inclination low-earth orbit. The irradiation of Fe
ions with the fluence of 5.2x10^8 Ion/cm2 resulted in no single event latchup
(SEL), although there were some possible single event upsets. The threshold
against SEL is higher than 1.68 MeV cm^2/mg, which is sufficiently high enough
that the SEL event should not be one of major causes of instrument downtime in

Quantization and Compressive Sensing
Quantization is an essential step in digitizing signals, and, therefore, an
indispensable component of any modern acquisition system. This book chapter
explores the interaction of quantization and compressive sensing and examines
practical quantization strategies for compressive acquisition systems.
Specifically, we first provide a brief overview of quantization and examine
fundamental performance bounds applicable to any quantization approach. Next,
we consider several forms of scalar quantizers, namely uniform, non-uniform,
and 1-bit. We provide performance bounds and fundamental analysis, as well as
practical quantizer designs and reconstruction algorithms that account for
quantization. Furthermore, we provide an overview of Sigma-Delta
() quantization in the compressed sensing context, and also
discuss implementation issues, recovery algorithms and performance bounds. As
we demonstrate, proper accounting for quantization and careful quantizer design

Geometric Phantom Categories
In this paper we give a construction of phantom categories, i.e. admissible
triangulated subcategories in bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on
smooth projective varieties that have trivial Hochschild homology and trivial
Grothendieck group. We also prove that these phantom categories are phantoms in
a stronger sense, namely, they have trivial K-motives and, hence, all their

Expression of a Cryptic Secondary Sigma Factor Gene Unveils Natural Competence for DNA Transformation in Staphylococcus aureus
It has long been a question whether Staphylococcus aureus, a major human pathogen, is able to develop natural competence for transformation by DNA. We previously showed that a novel staphylococcal secondary sigma factor, SigH, was a likely key component for competence development, but the corresponding gene appeared to be cryptic as its expression could not be detected during growth under standard laboratory conditions. Here, we have uncovered two distinct mechanisms allowing activation of SigH production in a minor fraction of the bacterial cell population. The first is a chromosomal gene duplication rearrangement occurring spontaneously at a low frequency [≤10−5], generating expression of a new chimeric sigH gene. The second involves post-transcriptional regulation through an upstream inverted repeat sequence, effectively suppressing expression of the sigH gene. Importantly, we have demonstrated for the first time that S. aureus cells producing active SigH become competent for transformation by plasmid or chromosomal DNA, which requires the expression of SigH-controlled competence genes. Additionally, using DNA from the N315 MRSA strain, we successfully transferred the full length SCCmecII element through natural transformation to a methicillin-sensitive strain, conferring methicillin resistance to the resulting S. aureus transformants. Taken together, we propose a unique model for staphylococcal competence regulation by SigH that could help explain the acquisition of antibiotic resistance genes through horizontal gene transfer in this important pathogen
