Exact solutions of a restricted ballistic deposition model on a one-dimensional staircase
Surface structure of a restricted ballistic deposition(RBD) model is examined
on a one-dimensional staircase with free boundary conditions. In this model,
particles can be deposited only at the steps of the staircase. We set up
recurrence relations for the surface fluctuation width using generating
function method. Steady-state solutions are obtained exactly given system size
. In the infinite-size limit, diverges as with the scaling
exponent . The dynamic exponent
is also found to be by solving the recurrence relations
numerically. This model can be viewed as a simple variant of the model which
belongs to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class . Comparing its deposition time scale
with that of the single-step model, we argue that must be the same as

Effect of Long-Range Interactions in the Conserved Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Equation
The conserved Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the presence of long-range
nonlinear interactions is studied by the dynamic renormalization group method.
The long-range effect produces new fixed points with continuously varying
exponents and gives distinct phase transitions, depending on both the
long-range interaction strength and the substrate dimension . The long-range
interaction makes the surface width less rough than that of the short-range
interaction. In particular, the surface becomes a smooth one with a negative

The market efficiency in the stock markets
We study the temporal evolution of the market efficiency in the stock markets
using the complexity, entropy density, standard deviation, autocorrelation
function, and probability distribution of the log return for Standard and
Poor's 500 (S&P 500), Nikkei stock average index, and Korean composition stock
price index (KOSPI). Based on the microscopic spin model, we also find that
these statistical quantities in stock markets depend on the market efficiency.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Binary spreading process with parity conservation
Recently there has been a debate concerning the universal properties of the
phase transition in the pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD) . Although some of the critical exponents seem to coincide with
those of the so-called parity-conserving universality class, it was suggested
that the PCPD might represent an independent class of phase transitions. This
point of view is motivated by the argument that the PCPD does not conserve
parity of the particle number. In the present work we pose the question what
happens if the parity conservation law is restored. To this end we consider the
the reaction-diffusion process . Surprisingly this
process displays the same type of critical behavior, leading to the conclusion
that the most important characteristics of the PCPD is the use of binary

Korean Ginseng-Induced Occupational Asthma and Determination of IgE Binding Components
A number of case reports on occupational asthma caused by herbal medicines have been issued, for example, on Sanyak, Chunkung, Banha, and Brazilian ginseng. Recently, cases of occupational asthma induced by Sanyak and Korean ginseng have been reported, but the pathogenic mechanisms involved are unknown. This study was carried out to evaluate the immunologic mechanism underlying Korean ginseng-induced occupational asthma. A patient engaged in Korean ginseng wholesale was referred for recurrent dyspnea, wheezing, and nasal symptoms, which were aggravated at work. Allergen bronchial provocation testing to Korean ginseng extract showed a typical immediate response, and skin prick testing to Korean ginseng extract also showed a strong positive response. Moreover, serum-specific IgE levels to Korean ginseng extract were significantly higher than in controls. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) inhibition tests showed a dose-dependent inhibition by Korean ginseng, but not by Dermatophagoides farinae, wheat flour, or Chinese balloon flower. Sodium dodecylsulfate-poly-acrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblotting revealed four specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) binding components at 26, 30, 47, and 60 kDa, which were not bound by control sera. These results strongly suggest that occupation asthma induced by Korean ginseng is induced via an IgE-mediated mechanism
Characteristics, Outcomes and Predictors of Long-Term Mortality for Patients Hospitalized for Acute Heart Failure: A Report From the Korean Heart Failure Registry
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Acute heart failure (AHF) is associated with a poor prognosis and it requires repeated hospitalizations. However, there are few studies on the characteristics, treatment and prognostic factors of AHF. The aims of this study were to describe the clinical characteristics, management and outcomes of the patients hospitalized for AHF in Korea.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We analyzed the clinical data of 3,200 hospitalization episodes that were recorded between June 2004 and April 2009 from the Korean Heart Failure (KorHF) Registry database. The mean age was 67.6±14.3 years and 50% of the patients were female.
RESULTS: Twenty-nine point six percent (29.6%) of the patients had a history of previous HF and 52.3% of the patients had ischemic heart disease. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was reported for 89% of the patients. The mean LVEF was 38.5±15.7% and 26.1% of the patients had preserved systolic function (LVEF ≥50%), which was more prevalent in the females (34.0% vs. 18.4%, respectively, p<0.001). At discharge, 58.6% of the patients received beta-blockers (BB), 53.7% received either angiotensin converting enzyme-inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ACEi/ARB), and 58.4% received both BB and ACEi/ARB. The 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-year mortality rates were 15%, 21%, 26% and 30%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that advanced age {hazard ratio: 1.023 (95% confidence interval: 1.004-1.042); p=0.020}, a previous history of heart failure {1.735 (1.150-2.618); p=0.009}, anemia {1.973 (1.271-3.063); p=0.002}, hyponatremia {1.861 (1.184-2.926); p=0.007}, a high level of serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) {3.152 (1.450-6.849); p=0.004} and the use of BB at discharge {0.599 (0.360-0.997); p=0.490} were significantly associated with total death.
CONCLUSION: We present here the characteristics and prognosis of an unselected population of AHF patients in Korea. The long-term mortality rate was comparable to that reported in other countries. The independent clinical risk factors included age, a previous history of heart failure, anemia, hyponatremia, a high NT-proBNP level and taking BB at discharge.ope
CDX1 and CDX2 Expression in Intestinal Metaplasia, Dysplasia and Gastric Cancer
Intestinal metaplasia (IM) has been regarded as a premalignant condition. However, the pathogenesis of IM is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of CDX1 and CDX2 in the formation of IM and the progression to dysplasia and gastric cancer (GC). A total of 270 subjects included 90 with GC, dysplasia and age- and sex-matched controls. Real-time PCR (RT-PCR) was performed with body specimens for CDX1 and CDX2. The expression of CDX2 was significantly higher in H. pylori positive group than H. pylori negative group (P = 0.045). CDX1 and CDX2 expression increased proportional to the IM grade of the body (P < 0.001). CDX2 expression was significantly higher in incomplete type of IM than in complete type (P = 0.045). The expression of CDX1 in dysplasia group was significantly higher than in the control group (P = 0.001); in addition, CDX1 and CDX2 in cancer group was significantly higher than control group (P < 0.001, and P < 0.001, respectively). Aberrant expression of CDX1 and CDX2 correlated with H. pylori infection and grade of IM in the body. Furthermore, the results suggest that CDX1 and CDX2 play a role in the progression to GC and dysplasia
Enhancement of Gastric Ulcer Healing and Angiogenesis by Cochinchina Momordica Seed Extract in Rats
Cochinchina momordica seed is the dried ripe seed of Momordica cochinchinensis, a perennial vine. The antiulcer effect of an extract from cochinchina momordica seeds (SK-MS10) was evaluated in a rat model of acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers. Gastric ulcers were produced by subserosal injection of acetic acid. SK-MS10 (200 mg/kg) or vehicle was administered orally once per day for 14 days after the acetic acid injection. The stomach was removed and the ulcer size measured at day 7 and 14 of the treatment. Expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was assessed by real-time RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. In addition, the microvasculature density (MVD) adjacent to the ulcer margin was examined by immunohistochemistry. The treatment with SK-MS10 for 7 and 14 days significantly accelerated ulcer healing and increased the expression of mRNA (at day 7) as well as VEGF protein (at day 14) compared to the vehicle-treated rats. The MVD for factor VIII was also higher in the SK-MS10 treatment group compared to the vehicle-treated rats; however, these differences were not statistically significant. These results suggest that SK-MS10 treatment accelerates the healing of gastric ulcers via upregulation of VEGF and angiogenesis in an acetic acid rat model
Metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma presenting as facial nerve palsy and facial pain
Facial nerve palsy due to temporal bone metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has rarely been reported. We experienced a rare case of temporal bone metastasis of HCC that initially presented as facial nerve palsy and was diagnosed by surgical biopsy. This patient also discovered for the first time that he had chronic hepatitis B and C infections due to this facial nerve palsy. Radiation therapy greatly relieved the facial pain and facial nerve palsy. This report suggests that hepatologists should consider metastatic HCC as a rare but possible cause of new-onset cranial neuropathy in patients with chronic viral hepatitis
