    Effects of a job crafting intervention program on work engagement among Japanese employees: a pretest-posttest study

    Abstract Background Job crafting, an employee-initiated job design/redesign, has become important for employees’ well-being such as work engagement. This study examined the effectiveness of a newly developed job crafting intervention program on work engagement (as primary outcome), as well as job crafting and psychological distress (as secondary outcomes), using a pretest-posttest study design among Japanese employees. Methods Participants were managers of a private company and a private psychiatric hospital in Japan. The job crafting intervention program consisted of two 120-min sessions with a two-week interval between them. Outcomes were assessed at baseline (Time 1), post-intervention (Time 2), and a one-month follow-up (Time 3). The mixed growth model analyses were conducted using time (Time 1, Time 2, and Time 3) as an indicator of intervention effect. Effect sizes were calculated using Cohen’s d. Results The program showed a significant positive effect on work engagement (t = 2.20, p = 0.03) in the mixed growth model analyses, but with only small effect sizes (Cohen’s d = 0.33 at Time 2 and 0.26 at Time 3). The program also significantly improved job crafting (t = 2.36, p = 0.02: Cohen’s d = 0.36 at Time 2 and 0.47 at Time 3) and reduced psychological distress (t = −2.06, p = 0.04: Cohen’s d = −0.15 at Time 2 and −0.31 at Time 3). Conclusions The study indicated that the newly developed job crafting intervention program was effective in increasing work engagement, as well as in improving job crafting and decreasing psychological distress, among Japanese managers.     Psychosocial factors at work and inflammatory markers: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Introduction Chronic inflammation may be a mediator for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD), metabolic diseases and psychotic and neurodegenerative disorders. Meta-analytic associations between work-related psychosocial factors and inflammatory markers have shown that work-related psychosocial factors could affect the flexibility and balance of the immune system. However, few systematic reviews or meta-analyses have investigated the association between work-related psychosocial factors and inflammatory markers. Based on prospective studies, the present investigation will conduct a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between work-related psychosocial factors and inflammatory markers.Methods and analysis The systematic review and meta-analysis will include published studies identified from electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Web of Science and Japan Medical Abstracts Society) according to recommendations of the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guideline. Inclusion criteria are studies that: examined associations between work-related psychosocial factors and increased inflammatory markers; used longitudinal or prospective cohort designs; were conducted among workers; provided sufficient data for calculating ORs or relative risk with 95% CIs; were published as original articles in English or Japanese; and were published up to the end of 2017. Study selection, data extraction, quality assessment and statistical syntheses will be conducted by 14 investigators. Any inconsistencies or disagreements will be resolved through discussion. The quality of studies will be evaluated using the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-randomized Studies.Ethics and dissemination The investigation study will be based on published studies, so ethics approval is not required. The results of this study will be submitted for publication in a scientific peer-reviewed journal. The findings may be useful for assessing risk factors for increased inflammatory markers in the workplace and determining future approaches for preventing CVD, metabolic diseases and psychotic and neurodegenerative disorders

    Basic research and clinical investigations of the neural basis of orofacial pain

    Background: Trigeminal nerve injury or orofacial inflammation causes severe pain in the orofacial regions innervated by uninjured nerves or uninflamed tissues as well as injured or inflamed tissues. Pathological orofacial pain associated with trigeminal nerve injury or inflammation is difficult to diagnose and treat. Highlights: To develop appropriate treatments for patients with orofacial pathological pain, various animal models of trigeminal nerve injury or orofacial inflammation have been developed. Further, the possible mechanisms involving the trigeminal ganglion (TG), trigeminal spinal subnucleus caudalis (Vc), and upper cervical spinal cord (C1-C2) have been studied. Conclusions: 1) Neurotransmitters released from the somata of TG neurons are involved in peripheral sensitization. 2) Neurotransmitter release from TG neurons is decreased by botulinum toxin-type A administration, suggesting that this toxin suppressed neurotransmitter release and alleviated the neuropathic pain-related behavior. 3) Altered states of glial cells and nociceptive neurons, in the Vc and C1-C2 are involved in pathological orofacial pain associated with trigeminal nerve injury or orofacial inflammation. 4) The trigeminal sensory nuclear complex, especially the trigeminal spinal subnucleus oralis, is involved in normal and pathological orofacial pain conditions after peripheral nerve injury. 5) Neuroimaging analyses have suggested functional changes in the central and peripheral nervous systems in neuropathic pain conditions

    A Transient Rise in Free Mg 2+ Ions Released from ATP-Mg Hydrolysis Contributes to Mitotic Chromosome Condensation

While condensin and other proteins are critical for organizing chromatin into the appropriate chromosome shape [ 6–17 ], free divalent cations such as Mg2+ and Ca2+, which condense chromatin or chromosomes in vitro [ 18–28 ], have long been considered important, especially for local condensation, because the nucleosome fiber has a net negative charge and is by itself stretched like “beads on a string” by electrostatic repulsion. For further folding, other positively charged factors are required to decrease the charge and repulsion [ 29 ]. However, technical limitations to measure intracellular free divalent cations, but not total cations [ 30 ], especially Mg2+, have prevented us from elucidating their function. Here, we developed a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based Mg2+ indicator that monitors free Mg2+ dynamics throughout the cell cycle. By combining this indicator with Ca2+ [ 31 ] and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) [ 32 ] indicators, we demonstrate that the levels of free Mg2+, but not Ca2+, increase during mitosis. The Mg2+ increase is coupled with a decrease in ATP, which is normally bound to Mg2+ in the cell [ 33 ]. ATP inhibited Mg2+-dependent chromatin condensation in vitro. Chelating Mg2+ induced mitotic cell arrest and chromosome decondensation, while ATP reduction had the opposite effect. Our results suggest that ATP-bound Mg2+ is released by ATP hydrolysis and contributes to mitotic chromosome condensation with increased rigidity, suggesting a novel regulatory mechanism for higher-order chromatin organization by the intracellular Mg2+-ATP balance

    There is a plan by the authors for developing a FreeCell solver by supervised deep learning that searches very few positions as compared with solvers currently released. A large number of solutions of high quality to initial positions in FreeCell are required for the supervised deep learning. A FreeCell solver without deep learning is being developed to make the data sets for deep learning. In this paper, construction of the latter FreeCell solver and the distribution of solutions to initial positions of FreeCell obtained by experiments using the solver are described

    Working hours and the onset of depressive disorder:a systematic review and meta-analysis

    : This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine whether working beyond the standard working hours was associated with a greater risk of depressive disorder among workers included in published prospective studies. This manuscript was prepared according to the PRISMA guideline checklist. A database search was conducted using MEDLINE (PubMed), PsycINFO, and PsycARTICLES using a relevant set of keywords. The eligibility criteria were as follows: (1) participants were adult workers; (2) exposure was defined as overtime work; (3) outcome were depressive disorders clinically diagnosed or assessed by a structured interview and (4) the study design was prospective or cohort. 7 studies were identified in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Overtime work was associated with a small, non-significant, elevated risk of depressive disorder (pooled relative risk=1.075; 95% CI 0.834 to 1.387; p=0.575) in a random effects model. The association tended to be greater for women. The risk of working 50 or more hours per week was slightly but not significantly increased (pooled relative risk=1.241; 95% CI 0.880 to 1.750; p=0.218). The effect of overtime work on depressive disorder remains inconclusive and may be small if not negligible. Sex differences and the effect of longer working hours on depressive disorder should be addressed in the future. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: Prospero CRD42015020003; Results

    Association of Job Stressors With Panic Attack and Panic Disorder in a Working Population in Japan:A Cross-Sectional Study

    OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate associations of job stressors with panic attack (PA) and panic disorder (PD) among Japanese workers. METHODS: A cross-sectional online questionnaire survey was conducted of 2060 workers. Job strain, effort/reward imbalance, and workplace social support were measured by the job content questionnaire and effort/reward imbalance questionnaire. These variables were classified into tertiles. PA/PD were measured by self-report based on the mini international neuropsychiatric interview (MINI). Multiple logistic regression was conducted, adjusting for demographic, lifestyle, and health-related covariates. RESULTS: Data from 1965 participants were analyzed. Adjusted odds ratio (OR) of PA/PD was significantly greater for the group with high effort/reward imbalance compared with the group with low effort/reward imbalance (ORs, 2.64 and 2.94, respectively, both P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study found effort/reward imbalance was associated with having PA/PD among Japanese workers
