The research was conducted in the experimental-production plum orchard during 2013. Some of the most important physical and mechanical properties of the fruit were investigated in three plum cultivars ("Čačanska Rana", "Čačanska Lepotica" i "Čačanska Najbolja") grafted on four rootstocks: one generative Myrobalan (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.) and three vegetative ones (Pixy, St. Julien A and Ferley). St. Julien A induced the highest all three fruit dimensions in "Čačanska Najbolja", and length and thickness in "Čačanska Lepotica". Myrobalan and Fereley had the same effect in the "Čačanska Rana". St. Julien A influenced the biggest fruit firmness in "Čačanska Najbolja" and the smallest in "Čačanska Lepotica".Publishe

Economic analysis of pear orchard establishment

    Get PDF
As a fruit crop, the pear is preferably grown and esteemed for its high utility value. Over recent decades, there have been great fluctuations in both quantity and quality of the pear fruit for a variety of reasons (obsolete growing technology, cultivar diversity, increased fire blight attacks, market instability, etc.). Given the favourable environmental conditions in Serbia and pear fruit shortage on domestic and foreign markets, producers' interest in pear production has increased in the last several years. The economic performance of a pear orchard is largely dependent on market conditions and pear marketing possibilities. Establishing a pear orchard requires a comprehensive analysis of agroeconomic conditions which govern both the choice of cultivars and orchard size. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyse pear orchard establishment costs. Two cultivars were used i.e. 'Williams' and 'Santa Maria'. The results of the agroeconomic analysis show that the investment costs of establishing a 1 ha orchard amount to €8,975.75. Orchard management costs are €2,020.25 in the first year, €1,803.25 in the second year and €3,026.00 in the third year. Total investment costs associated with orchard establishment and management during the first three years are € 18,510.25. Management costs for a fully productive orchard are €4,657.00. The return on investment, along with profit, is achieved in the fifth year. If the intensive orchard produced a yield higher by 35% than the average yield projections, as typical of high-density production systems, the return on investment would be achieved in the fourth year

Tomato fruits ‘1402’ were harvested at mature green (MG), light pink (LP) and light red (LR) stages and treated with 0.3 μL L-1 of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) at 20°C for 24 h to investigate the ability to retard tomato fruit ripening. The treated and control fruit were stored at 5°C and 12 oC for 14 days and a further 4 days at 20oC for a shelf life period. The results show that the effects of 1-MCP on fruit ripening were related to the stage of maturity and storage temperature. The MG stage was the optimal stage for 1-MCP treatment when fruit storage was at 12°C. 1-MCP treatment reduced the lipophilic antioxidant activity (LAA) of the tomato fruit, but the hydrophilic antioxidant activity (HAA) remained similar to that observed at harvest. 1-MCP is a potential tool for extending shelf life, delaying tomato fruit ripening (slowing color development and firmness loss) and enhancing quality of tomatoes. Keywords: Tomato, 1-MCP, storage, stage of maturity, temperatureAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(6), pp. 547-55

Introduction The optimal treatment of pregnancy associated VTE (venous thromboembolism) has not been established yet. Objective The assessment of the efficacy and safety of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) nadroparin and unfractionated heparin (UFH) used for the treatment of pregnancy and puerperium related VTE. Primary study goals were to analyze the incidence of recurrent VTE (proximal extension or pulmonary thromboembolism), thrombocytopenia, major and minor hemorrhages and skin allergic reactions. The study also included the incidence of miscarriages, stillbirth and neonatal abnormalities. We also studied the relationship between the presence of thrombophilia and the occurrence of complications during VIE treatment. Methods Seventy-two women with antepartal VTE treated with s.c. LMWH during entire pregnancy and 88 women with postpartal VIE initially treated with either s.c. LMWH or i.v.UFH were under follow-up during the entire treatment. Thrombophilia testing included antithrombin, protein C and protein S activity levels, Activated protein C (APC) resistance, LA, ACL, FV Leiden, FII G20210A and MTHFR C677T mutations. Results Twice a day weight based therapeutic regimen was applied for LMWH and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) adjusted UFH dosages. After 2-6 weeks of antepartal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) treatment the dose of nadroparin was reduced to intermediate level. The duration of LMWH therapy during pregnancy was 1-35 weeks, on average 16 weeks. One case (0.62%) of DVT propagation into the vena cava occurred in a woman with antithrombin deficiency treated with LMWH. Two women (1.25%) had minor bleeding and 5 (3.125%) had minimal bleeding, while 3 (1.9%) had skin allergic reactions. The rate of successful pregnancy outcome was 97.2%. There were no cases of stillbirth or neonatal congenital abnormalities. Thrombophilia was found in 86 women (53.7%). No statistically significant correlation between the presence of thrombophilia and treatment complications were found. Conclusion Nadroparin is both safe and effective for the treatment of DVT during pregnancy and puerperium

Nanosized bismuth ferrite powder has a potential application in the production of lead free piezoelectric materials for actuators as well as magnetoelectric sensors. The simple, low-costing and energy-saving hydrothermal method has advantages over the conventional methods. BiFeO3 powders were made using Bi(NO3)35H2O and Fe(NO3)3 9H2O as starting material and 8 M KOH as mineralizer. The particle size and morphology were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase composition of obtained samples was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. It revealed that synthesized material crystallize in space group R3c with cell parameters a = b = 5.5780(10) Å and c = 13,863(3) Å. IR and Raman spectroscopy have been performed on the synthesized bismuth ferrite (BFO) powders in order to confirm the formation of pure and well-crystallized BFO nanocrystallites. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was performed in order to provide information on Fe cation arrangement in the BiFeO3 phase. The magnetic and optical properties of properties of BFO samples were characterized by SQUID magnetometry, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. Temperature dependence of magnetization shows antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition at TN = 220 K, while below this temperature weak ferromagnetic ordering is detected

Activity of a Catalase Enzyme in Plants from the Burned Areas of the Vidlič Mountain Beech Forest

    Get PDF
In 2007, a catastrophic fire on the Vidlic Mountain in south-east Serbia occurred. It burned down nearly 1000 ha of forest. Study of biochemical and physiological parameters in plants which inhabit post fire areas and their comparison with control is of essential importance in estimating the impact of fire on plant characteristics and potential applications. After the fire pioneer and indigenous plants from habitats affected by fire have a characteristic metabolism. In this comparative study, the activity of enzyme catalase (ЕC 1.11.1.6, H2 O2 : H2 O2 oxidoreductase) was determined in plant species from a habitat affected by fire and the same plant species from the forest which had not been affected by fire as a control. Assessment of enzyme activity was carried out on the root, leaves and flowers of plant species Geranium macrorrhizum, Doronicum columnae, Aegopodium podagraria, Fagus moesiaca, Tussilago farfara, Glechoma hirsuta, Chelidonium majus and Primula veris. The first group of plant samples used for determination was obtained from the habitat that was affected by fire two years ago. Catalase activity was measured using the gasometric method and the values obtained for this activity were expressed as ml of O2 . The presented results show a significant increase in catalase activity in individuals from habitats affected by fire in relation to the control group. Increased catalase activity is a consequence of oxidative stress caused by chemical changes in soil that were generated by fire.Publishe

Effects of the polyphenol resveratrol on contractility of human term pregnant myometrium

The ideal agent for prevention and treatment of uterine abnormal contractility has not been found. The polyphenol resveratrol possesses a wide spectrum of pharmacologic properties, but its influence on the contractility of human myometrium is not defined. The present study evaluated the effect of resveratrol on the oxytocin-induced contractions of human term pregnant myometrium in vitro and the contribution of different K+ channels to resveratrol action. Resveratrol induced a concentration-dependent relaxation of myometrium contractions (pD(2) value and maximal responses were 4.52 and 82.25%, respectively). Glibenclamide, a selective blocker of ATP-sensitive (K-ATP), iberiotoxin, a selective blockers of big-calcium sensitive (BKCa) and 4-aminopiridine, a non-selective blocker of voltage-sensitive (Kv) channels induced a significant shift to the right of the concentration-response curves of resveratrol. Inhibition achieved by 0.1 mM resveratrol was insensitive to all K+ channel blockers. A K+ channel opener, pinacidil, inhibited oxytocin-induced contractions of pregnant myometrium with comparable potency and efficacy to resveratrol (pD(2) values and maximal relaxation were 4.52 and 83.67%, respectively). Based on K+ channel opener/blocker affinities, it appears that the inhibitory response of resveratrol involves different myometrial K+ channels. When applied in high concentrations, resveratrol has an additional K+-channel-independent mechanism(s) of action. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry staining and western blot analyses detected the presence and distribution of K-ATP, BKCa and Kv channel proteins in pregnant myometrium
