    A Novel Nonlinear Control of Boost Converter using CCM Phase Plane

    Boost converter is one of fundamental DC-DC converters and used to deliver electric power with boosted voltage in many electrical systems. Several control strategies have been applied to control a boost converter delivering a constant output voltage. Generally, boost converter works in two modes; one is called a Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM). Many researches use CCM model in the controller design, but they never ensure that the controller always works in CCM. This paper proposes novel nonlinear controller of boost converter designed using the modification of flow in phase plane. The proposed controller guarantees that the boost converter works only in CCM region. The simulation result confirms that our proposed controller brings the state variables from any initial point to a desired operating point successfully

    Serine 58 of 14-3-3ζ Is a molecular switch regulating ASK1 and oxidant stress-induced cell death

    Oxidant stress is a ubiquitous stressor with negative impacts on multiple cell types. ASK1 is a central mediator of oxidant injury, but while mechanisms of its inhibition, such as sequestration by 14-3-3 proteins and thioredoxin, have been identified, mechanisms of activation have remained obscure and the signaling pathways regulating this are not clear. Here, we report that phosphorylation of 14-3-3ζ at serine 58 (S58) is dynamically regulated in the cell and that the phosphorylation status of S58 is a critical factor regulating oxidant stress-induced cell death. Phosphorylation of S58 releases ASK1 from 14-3-3ζ, and ASK1 then activates stress-activated protein kinases, leading to cell death. While several members of the mammalian sterile 20 (Mst) family of kinases can phosphorylate S58 when overexpressed, we identify Ste20/oxidant stress response kinase 1 (SOK-1), an Mst family member known to be activated by oxidant stress, as a central endogenous regulator of S58 phosphorylation and thereby of ASK1-mediated cell death. Our findings identify a novel pathway that regulates ASK1 activation and oxidant stress-induced cell death

    Application of Chondroitin Sulfate Derivatives for Understanding Axonal Guidance in the Nervous System during Development

    Neuronal axons and their growth cones recognize molecular guidance cues within the local environment, forming axonal pathways to produce precise neuronal networks during nervous system development. Chondroitin sulfates (CS), carbohydrate chains on chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans, exhibit great structural diversity and exert various influences on axons and growth cones as guidance cues or their modulators; however, the relationship between their structural diversity and function in axonal guidance is not well known. To uncover the roles of CS in axonal guidance, artificially modified hybrid molecules: CS derivatives of biotinylated CS and lipid-derivatized CS, were used.The experiments with biotinylated CS suggest that the growing axons act on their environment, modifying CS, and rendering it more favorable for their growth. The experiments with lipid-derivatized CS demonstrated that growth cones distinguish types of CS with different unit contents and are likely to discriminate the structural diversity of CS.The application of CS derivatives is useful in uncovering axon–environment interaction and structure–function relationship of CS directly

    Using Square Wave Input for Wireless Power Transfer

    A wireless power transfer (WPT) circuit is composed of a transmitting circuit with an AC power supply and a receiving circuit with a load, and the circuits are wirelessly connected each other. Then a designer chooses the wave form of the AC power supply. Many papers about WPT adopt a sinusoidal wave as the input. The frequency of the sinusoidal wave is generally determined to the resonant frequency of the circuit for high power transfer. Since the number of circuit elements in the power supply to generate a square wave is much less than that of a sinusoidal wave, WPT with a square wave input should be treated. In fact, some papers about WPT adopt a square wave as the input, and adjust the frequency of the square wave to the resonant frequency of the circuit. In this paper, we examine how the frequency of a square wave input affects power and efficiency of WPT circuits, and propose a procedure how to determine the frequency of the input to improve power and efficiency. Finally we discuss which wave should be adopted as an input and how the frequency of the input should be determined, regardless of whether resonant phenomena occur or not

    Accurate Symbolic Steady State Modeling of Buck Converter

    Steady state analysis is fundamental to any electric and electronic circuit design. Buck converter is one of most popular power electronics circuit and has been analyzed in various situations. Although the behavior of buck converters can be understood approximately by the well-known state space averaging method, little is known in the sense of detailed behavior or exact solution to equations. In this paper a steady state analysis of buck converter is proposed which allows the exact calculation of steady state response. Our exact solution is expressed as a Fourier series. Our result is compared with numerical calculation to be verified. Our method copes with more complicated problems such as describing average power and root-mean-square power that are most critical issues in power electronics circuit

    Apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1) is a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) kinase kinase that activates the downstream MAPKs, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38. ASK1 is activated by various types of stress, such as oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and infection, and regulates various cellular functions. Recently, it has been reported that ASK1 is associated with various diseases induced by oxidative stress.     Proteoglycans as Cues for Axonal Guidance in Formation of Retinotectal or Retinocollicular Projections

    Understanding the formation of neuronal circuits has long been one of the basic problems in developmental neurobiology. Projections from the retina to their higher center, the optic tectum in nonmammalian vertebrates and the superior colliculus in mammals, are most amenable to experimental approaches; thus, much information has been accumulated about the mechanisms of axonal guidance. The retinal axons navigate along the appropriate pathway with the help of a series of guidance cues. Although much of the work has focused on proteinaceous factors, proteoglycans have been identified as playing important roles in retinal axon guidance. Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans and heparan sulfate proteoglycans are involved in essential decisions of axon steering along the pathway. However, it has not been determined whether diversity of the carbohydrate chains results in differential effects and how their diversity is recognized by growth cones, which represent an important area of future research

    A General Method to Parameter Optimization for Highly Efficient Wireless Power Transfer

    This paper proposes a new and general method to optimize a working frequency and a load resistance in order to realize highly efficient wireless power transfer. It should be noticed that neither resonant frequency nor matched impedance maximizes efficiency of wireless power transfer circuit, in general. This paper establishes a mathematical model of a commonly used wireless power transfer circuit, and derives a mathematical expression of circuit efficiency which involves a working frequency, a load resistance and the other parameters as symbols. This enables us to find the optimal workingfrequency and load resistance. The result of this paper is compared with results by a method based on resonance and impedance matching, and then clarified by a numerical example
