    Supersymmetric Relations Among Electromagnetic Dipole Operators

    Supersymmetric contributions to all leptonic electromagnetic dipole operators have essentially identical diagramatic structure. With approximate slepton universality this allows the muon anomalous magnetic moment to be related to the electron electric dipole moment in terms of supersymmetric phases, and to radiative flavor changing lepton decays in terms of small violations of slepton universality. If the current discrepancy between the measured and Standard Model values of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is due to supersymmetry, the current bound on the electron electric dipole moment then implies that the phase of the electric dipole operator is less than 2×1032 \times 10^{-3}. Likewise the current bound on μeγ\mu \to e \gamma decay implies that the fractional selectron-smuon mixing in the left-left mass squared matrix, \delta m_{\smuon \selectron}^2 / m_{\slepton}^2, is less than 10410^{-4}. These relations and constraints are fairly insensitive to details of the superpartner spectrum for moderate to large tanβ\tan \beta.Comment: Latex, 38 pages, 2 figure

    Histomorphological study of lead-induced lungs lesion of mice treated with Moringa oleifera leaves extracts

    Background: Moringa oleifera leaves extracts are currently among the most common medicinal plants used to cure some diseases. Many studies have been conducted on the benefits of Moringa oleifera leaves extracts but only few studies focused on its Antifibrotic effects on lung tissue. Aim: To study the Histomorphological changes associated with Moringa oleifera Leave extracts on lead-induced lung lesion of Mice. Materials and Method: Twenty adult mice were divided into four groups, three test groups (A, B and C) and a control group (D). The test groups were administered orally with 5mg/kg lead acetate and 10mg/kg Moringa oleifera leaves extract concurrently; 5mg/kg lead acetate only; 10mg/kg Moringa oleifera leaves extract only; while the control group did not receive any intervention. The intervention period lasted for three weeks. On the twenty-two day of the research, the animals were sacrificed; lung tissues were harvested, processed for histological examination and stained using Hematoxylin and Eosin staining technique. Result: Group A animal administered with lead acetate and Moringa oleifera leaves extract concurrently, shows that the deleterious effects of Lead were ameliorated, with an improve histological features of the lungs when compared with that of the Group B. while an Ill defined alveoli, thinned alveoli wall, sacs emphysema and distortion of the parenchyma cells that constitute the lung tissue are seen in test Group B, administered with lead acetate only. A remarkable, intact lung alveoli, lung parenchyma cells were observed to in test Group C and very much correlated to that of the control group. Conclusion: Moringa oleifera administration reduced the severity of lead’s damaging effects to the lungs, and may likely exhibits anti-fibrotic as well as prophylactic effects by repairing damaged alveoli and in the latter case by preserving and /or regenerating the lung tubules.     Recent Progress on Anomalous X-ray Pulsars

    I review recent observational progress on Anomalous X-ray Pulsars, with an emphasis on timing, variability, and spectra. Highlighted results include the recent timing and flux stabilization of the notoriously unstable AXP 1E 1048.1-5937, the remarkable glitches seen in two AXPs, the newly recognized variety of AXP variability types, including outbursts, bursts, flares, and pulse profile changes, as well as recent discoveries regarding AXP spectra, including their surprising hard X-ray and far-infrared emission, as well as the pulsed radio emission seen in one source. Much has been learned about these enigmatic objects over the past few years, with the pace of discoveries remaining steady.     Charged lepton Flavor Violation in Supersymmetry with Bilinear R-Parity Violation

    The simplest unified extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with bi-linear R-parity violation naturally predicts a hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum, suitable to explain atmospheric and solar neutrino fluxes. We study whether the individual violation of the lepton numbers L_{e,mu,tau} in the charged sector can lead to measurable rates for BR(mu->e gamma)and $BR(tau-> mu gamma). We find that some of the R-parity violating terms that are compatible with the observed atmospheric neutrino oscillations could lead to rates for mu->e gamma measurable in projected experiments. However, the Delta m^2_{12} obtained for those parameters is too high to be compatible with the solar neutrino data, excluding therefore the possibility of having measurable rates for mu->e gamma in the model.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures.     Unveiling Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters with INTEGRAL

    Thanks to INTEGRAL's long exposures of the Galactic Plane, the two brightest Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters, SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14, have been monitored and studied in detail for the first time at hard-X/soft gamma rays. This has produced a wealth of new scientific results, which we will review here. Since SGR 1806-20 was particularly active during the last two years, more than 300 short bursts have been observed with INTEGRAL. and their characteristics have been studied with unprecedented sensitivity in the 15-200 keV range. A hardness-intensity anticorrelation within the bursts has been discovered and the overall Number-Intensity distribution of the bursts has been determined. In addition, a particularly active state, during which ~100 bursts were emitted in ~10 minutes, has been observed on October 5 2004, indicating that the source activity was rapidly increasing. This eventually led to the Giant Flare of December 27th 2004, for which a possible soft gamma-ray (>80 keV) early afterglow has been detected. The deep observations allowed us to discover the persistent emission in hard X-rays (20-150 keV) from 1806-20 and 1900+14, the latter being in a quiescent state, and to directly compare the spectral characteristics of all Magnetars (two SGRs and three Anomalous X-ray Pulsars) detected with INTEGRAL.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, Presented at the conference "Isolated Neutron Stars: from the Surface to the Interior", London, UK, 24-28 April 200

    Coupled impacts of climate and land use change across a river-lake continuum: Insights from an integrated assessment model of Lake Champlain\u27s Missisquoi Basin, 2000-2040

    Global climate change (GCC) is projected to bring higher-intensity precipitation and higher-variability temperature regimes to the Northeastern United States. The interactive effects of GCC with anthropogenic land use and land cover changes (LULCCs) are unknown for watershed level hydrological dynamics and nutrient fluxes to freshwater lakes. Increased nutrient fluxes can promote harmful algal blooms, also exacerbated by warmer water temperatures due to GCC. To address the complex interactions of climate, land and humans, we developed a cascading integrated assessment model to test the impacts of GCC and LULCC on the hydrological regime, water temperature, water quality, bloom duration and severity through 2040 in transnational Lake Champlain\u27s Missisquoi Bay. Temperature and precipitation inputs were statistically downscaled from four global circulation models (GCMs) for three Representative Concentration Pathways. An agent-based model was used to generate four LULCC scenarios. Combined climate and LULCC scenarios drove a distributed hydrological model to estimate river discharge and nutrient input to the lake. Lake nutrient dynamics were simulated with a 3D hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model. We find accelerated GCC could drastically limit land management options to maintain water quality, but the nature and severity of this impact varies dramatically by GCM and GCC scenario

    Magnetism in Dense Quark Matter

    We review the mechanisms via which an external magnetic field can affect the ground state of cold and dense quark matter. In the absence of a magnetic field, at asymptotically high densities, cold quark matter is in the Color-Flavor-Locked (CFL) phase of color superconductivity characterized by three scales: the superconducting gap, the gluon Meissner mass, and the baryonic chemical potential. When an applied magnetic field becomes comparable with each of these scales, new phases and/or condensates may emerge. They include the magnetic CFL (MCFL) phase that becomes relevant for fields of the order of the gap scale; the paramagnetic CFL, important when the field is of the order of the Meissner mass, and a spin-one condensate associated to the magnetic moment of the Cooper pairs, significant at fields of the order of the chemical potential. We discuss the equation of state (EoS) of MCFL matter for a large range of field values and consider possible applications of the magnetic effects on dense quark matter to the astrophysics of compact stars.Comment: To appear in Lect.     The International Virus Bioinformatics Meeting 2020.

    The International Virus Bioinformatics Meeting 2020 was originally planned to take place in Bern, Switzerland, in March 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic put a spoke in the wheel of almost all conferences to be held in 2020. After moving the conference to 8-9 October 2020, we got hit by the second wave and finally decided at short notice to go fully online. On the other hand, the pandemic has made us even more aware of the importance of accelerating research in viral bioinformatics. Advances in bioinformatics have led to improved approaches to investigate viral infections and outbreaks. The International Virus Bioinformatics Meeting 2020 has attracted approximately 120 experts in virology and bioinformatics from all over the world to join the two-day virtual meeting. Despite concerns being raised that virtual meetings lack possibilities for face-to-face discussion, the participants from this small community created a highly interactive scientific environment, engaging in lively and inspiring discussions and suggesting new research directions and questions. The meeting featured five invited and twelve contributed talks, on the four main topics: (1) proteome and RNAome of RNA viruses, (2) viral metagenomics and ecology, (3) virus evolution and classification and (4) viral infections and immunology. Further, the meeting featured 20 oral poster presentations, all of which focused on specific areas of virus bioinformatics. This report summarizes the main research findings and highlights presented at the meeting

    Application of Comet assay to assess the effects of white bean meal on DNA of human lymphocytes

    This study was conducted to evaluate the potential induction of genotoxic effects of white bean flour using the Comet assay. The test was conducted with human lymphocytes present in whole blood immediately after collection, by incubation with white bean flour in three concentrations (3.92, 9.52 and 18.18 mg/mL) at 37 ºC for 4 h followed by preparation of slides. Samples were considered positive (above 20% damage) when the damage observed to cellular DNA was higher than the negative control. No genotoxic potential was found at the doses tested. However, it would be premature to suggest absence of risk to human health of DNA damage since the exposure of cells to the extract was restricted to four hours rather than a whole cell cycle. Additionally, further information on toxicology should be obtained in future studies.Este estudo foi realizado para avaliar o potencial de indução de efeitos genotóxicos da farinha de feijão branco utilizando o teste do Cometa. O ensaio foi realizado com linfócitos humanos presentes no sangue imediatamente após a coleta, por incubação com farinha de feijão branco em três concentrações (3,92, 9,52 e 18,18 mg/mL) a 37 ºC por 4 h, seguida de preparação das lâminas. As amostras foram consideradas positivas (acima de 20% de dano), quando os danos observados no DNA celular foram maiores do que o controle negativo. Verificou-se que as doses testadas não mostraram potencial genotóxico. No entanto, seria prematuro fazer recomendações sobre o padrão de riscos para a saúde humana resultantes de danos ao DNA já que exposição das células ao extrato foi restrito ao período de quatro horas e não durante um ciclo celular completo. Além disso, outras informações sobre a toxicologia devem ser obtidas no futuro
