Variation in motion events: Theory and applications

This chapter analyses the role of intratypological and dialectal variation in the lexicalisation of motion events (Talmy 1991, 2000) and its application to second language acquisition. The first part discusses intratypological variation with respect to the semantic component of Path and proposes a cline of Path salience on the basis of twenty-one languages. Then, it describes dialectal variation in Spanish and Aragonese. Results show that dialects within these two Romance languages differ in the type of linguistic resources they use as well as in their quality and quantity. The second part briefly reviews some L2 problematic areas that can benefit from these approaches such as conceptual transfer, deixis, and idiomaticity. The role of force dynamics and intentionality in the reconstruction of L2 verb meanings:A Danish-Spanish bidirectional study

This paper examines the role of force dynamics and intentionality in the description of placement events by two groups of native speakers of typologically and genetically different languages, Danish and Spanish, and by two groups of intermediate adult learners, Danish learners of L2 Spanish and Spanish learners of L2 Danish. The results of the study showed that (a) force dynamics and intentionality are important semantic components in both languages, but their distribution and relative focus differed crosslinguistically, and (b) the two learner groups had difficulties in reconstructing the meanings of the L2 verbs involving these two semantic components. Learning difficulties were observed when moving from a less to a more complex L2 system, when moving in the opposite direction, i.e., from a more to a less complex L2 system and when moving to an L2 system that is as complex as the learners native one

Etnología y lingüística en la obra musical de Agustín González Acilu

Dentro de la composición contemporánea vasca, A. González Acilu representa una figura singular, no sólo por sus particulares tratamientos de la música vocal y su incidencia en la denominada composición fonética, sino también por su original propuesta acerca de lo que pueda ser la "esencia de la música vasca". En este artículo se plantea un repaso de la producción musical más significativa de Acilu, en relación a las interpretaciones antropológicas y estéticas que le llevan, precisamente, a configurar esa peculiar manera de entender lo vasco en música.A. On propose, dans cet article, une révision de la production musicale la plus significative d'Acilu, en relation avec les interprétations anthropologiques et esthétiques qui l'amèrent, précisément, à configurer cette manière caractéristique de comprendre le basque en musique.Within contemporary Basque composition, A. González Acilu represents a singular figure, not only because of his peculiar treatment of vocal music and his incidence in the so-called phonetic composition, but also because of his original proposal about what could be the "essence of Basque music". La liberalización del mercado de las telecomunicaciones ofrece variadas posibilidades a todos los que se hayan preparado para este enorme reto del nuevo modelo comunicacional. Ahí están la telefonía y la televisión por cable, que abren expectativas inmensas. La difusión de productos culturales, el teletrabajo, la telecompra, etc. son una realidad. El Gobierno Vasco asumió en su día el liderazgo de invertir y desarrollar una estrategia de futuro dentro del mercado de telecomunicaciones. El nacimiento de Euskaltel muestra esa voluntad, que pretende adaptarse al mundo cambiante sin perder los signos de identidad propios, siempre a través del deseo de ser agente activo de la propia transformación.Telekomunikazioen merkatuaren liberalizazioak askotariko ahalbideak eskaintzen dizkie komunikazio-ereduak dakarren erronka gaitz honetarako prestatu direnei. Book review: N.I. Stolova. Cognitive Linguistics and lexical change. Motion verbs from Latin to Romance. Amsterdam & Philadelphia: John Benjamins, 2015

This book studies the semantic evolution of translocativemotion verbs fromLatin to Romance from a historical cognitive linguistics perspective. It is divided into ten chapters plus references and two indexes, one for language and language families and another for subjects and terms. It has two main goals: (i) to apply cognitive linguisticsmethodologies and theoretical tools (mainly, lexicalisation patterns and conceptual metaphor) to explain the onomasiological (Chapters 2–4) and semasiological (Chapters 5–7) evolution of motion verbs, and (ii) to bring useful insights from (Romance) historical linguistic practice into cognitive linguistic research (Chapters 8–9). Chapter 1 outlines the main goals, explains key concepts (motion verb, lexical change), and contextualises the research to follow. This investigation examines how the structural and semantic characteristics of Latin motion verbs diachronically develop into Romance from both a general Pan-Romance stance as well as a language-specific level. Ten categories of translocative motion are examined: one general motion (neutral GO), six path-related (TOWARD, AWAY, INSIDE, OUTSIDE, UPWARD, DOWNWARD), and three manner-related (WALK, RUN, JUMP).
