    Fighters pilot helmet design for 5th generation aircraft

    Fighter pilots’ helmets have become more complex and heavier resulting in long term implications to pilots musculoskeletal systems as they fly and experience high g-load. Current research has identified design changes to the helmet to accommodate the ancillary items fitted to assist pilots but at the expense of comfort and additional loading. Its manufacturing requirements and adaptations to offer bespoke solutions are addressed to allow for training and operational usage. To produce the next generation of helmets that reduce long-term injuries, from g-loads and asymmetrical ancillaries requires individual considerations, unique manufacturing requirements and the ability to support with service spares anywhere in the world at short notice. This paper will describe how manufacturing requirements are matched to ergonomic needs and bespoke components can support global demands

    The Place of Patient-Centred Care in Medical Professional Culture: A Qualitative Study

    Despite widespread support, the implementation of patient-centred care (PCC) remains a challenge and it is often assumed that further clinical education and culture change are needed. To inform such efforts, we need to know whether the principles underpinning PCC accord with doctors’ personal and cultural values. In this chapter, we report the results of a qualitative interview study of clinicians, conducted in order to establish whether PCC emerges in the narratives of Australian doctors, and, if so, how. Our findings suggest that doctors both understand and value the principles underpinning PCC. This suggests that patient-centeredness is part of the professional culture of medicine, and that those wanting to ensure that this patient-centeredness remains an integral part of practice for succeeding generations of doctors might need to focus not as much on education and culture change as on ensuring that there are structures and processes in place to support PCC

    Imaging anomalous nematic order and strain in optimally doped BaFe2_2(As,P)2_2

    We present the strain and temperature dependence of an anomalous nematic phase in optimally doped BaFe2_2(As,P)2_2. Polarized ultrafast optical measurements reveal broken 4-fold rotational symmetry in a temperature range above TcT_c in which bulk probes do not detect a phase transition. Using ultrafast microscopy, we find that the magnitude and sign of this nematicity vary on a 50−100 Ό{50{-}100}~\mum length scale, and the temperature at which it onsets ranges from 40 K near a domain boundary to 60 K deep within a domain. Scanning Laue microdiffraction maps of local strain at room temperature indicate that the nematic order appears most strongly in regions of weak, isotropic strain. These results indicate that nematic order arises in a genuine phase transition rather than by enhancement of local anisotropy by a strong nematic susceptibility. We interpret our results in the context of a proposed surface nematic phase

Furthermore, land transformation and habitat fragmentation have limited the ability of species to disperse naturally throughout their ranges. To compensate for both this defaunation and disruption of animal movement patterns, rewilding and restoration are becoming increasingly important approaches to conserve and promote biodiversity.     Therapeutic interventions for osteoarthritis of the wrist: a systematic review and meta-analysis [version 1; referees: 3 approved]

    Background: In order to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for osteoarthritis of the wrist in adults we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The MEDLINE and EMBASE via OVID, CINAHL and SPORTDiscus via EBSCO databases were searched from inception to 25th April  2018.All randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and any prospective studies of adults with wrist osteoarthritis investigating any intervention with a comparator were included.  Data were extracted and checked for accuracy and completeness by pairs of reviewers. Primary outcomes were pain and function. Comparative treatment effects were analysed by random effects at all time points. Results: Three RCTs were identified for inclusion after screening and all had a high risk of bias. Two compared proximal row carpectomy (PRC) with four corner fusion (4CF) for post-traumatic osteoarthritis, while the other compared leather with commercial wrist splints in patients with chronic wrist pain, of which a small group had wrist osteoarthritis.  Conclusion: There is no prospective study comparing operative to non-operative treatment for wrist osteoarthritis, while there is a paucity of prospective studies assessing the effectiveness of both non-operative and operative interventions.  Further research is necessary in order to better define which patients benefit from which specific interventions.     Cross-cultural effects of color, but not morphological masculinity, on perceived attractiveness of men's faces

The role of masculinity (which for adults is thought to be a relatively stable shape cue to developmental testosterone levels) in male facial attractiveness has been examined, with mixed results. Recent work on the perception of skin color (a more variable cue to current health status) indicates that increased skin redness, yellowness, and lightness enhance apparent health. It has been suggested that stable cues such as masculinity may be less important to attractiveness judgments than short-term, more variable health cues. We examined associations between male facial attractiveness, masculinity, and skin color in African and Caucasian populations. Masculinity was not found to be associated with attractiveness in either ethnic group. However, skin color was found to be an important predictor of attractiveness judgments, particularly for own-ethnicity faces. Our results suggest that more plastic health cues, such as skin color, are more important than developmental cues such as masculinity. Further, unfamiliarity with natural skin color variation in other ethnic groups may limit observers' ability to utilize these color cues

    Scales of analysis : evidence of fish and fish processing at Star Carr

    This contribution directly relates to the paper published by Wheeler in 1978 entitled ‘Why were there no fish re- mains at Star Carr?’. Star Carr is arguably the richest, most studied and re-interpreted Mesolithic site in Europe but the lack of fish remains has continued to vex scholars. Judging from other materials, the preservation conditions at the site in the late 1940s/early 1950s should have been good enough to permit the survival of fish remains, and particularly dentaries of the northern pike (Esox lucius L., 1758) as found on other European sites of this age. The lack of evidence has therefore been attributed to a paucity of fish in the lake. However, new research has provided multiple lines of evidence, which not only demonstrate the presence of fish, but also provide evidence for the species present, data on how and where fish were being processed on site, and interpretations for the fishing methods that might have been used. This study demonstrates that an integrated approach using a range of methods at landscape, site and microscopic scales of analysis can elucidate such questions. In addition, it demonstrates that in future studies, even in cases where physical remains are lacking, forensic techniques hold significant potential
