    Long-term management and outcome of lung transplantation in Japan

    The long-term survival after lung transplantation (LT) is favorable in Japan. However, longterm survivors after LT are subject to late complications, including chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD), malignancy, infection, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) because of the need for lifelong immunosuppression. The rates of single cadaveric LT (CLT) and living-donor lobar LT (LDLLT) are higher than that of bilateral CLT in Japan. Here, we will describe the management of late complications and long-term outcome after LT in Japan. Attention should be paid to not only the phenotype of CLAD but also the difference in CLAD after CLT and after LDLLT as well as the timing of lung re-transplantation for advanced CLAD, especially after single CLT. Since post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder is the most common malignancy after LT, infection monitoring for infection-related malignancies and appropriate screening are keys to the early diagnosis and treatment of malignancy after LT. The long-term management of infection after LT is also important, especially with regard to community-acquired pathogens, Aspergillus, and cytomegalovirus. When providing long-term care after LT, physicians should be aware of CKD and the timing of renal replacement therapy in cases with severe CKD. The widespread use of computed tomography and dialysis in Japan are beneficial for long-term survivors of LT. The similar survival outcomes of single CLT and LDLLT, compared with bilateral CLT, might contribute to improved long-term survival in Japan. Pulmonologists are encouraged to become further involved in long-term management after LT in Japan

    Dust Coagulation Regulated by Turbulent Clustering in Protoplanetary Disks

    The coagulation of dust particles is a key process in planetesimal formation. However, the radial drift and bouncing barriers are not completely resolved, especially for silicate dust. Since the collision velocities of dust particles are regulated by turbulence in a protoplanetary disk, turbulent clustering should be properly treated. To that end, direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of the Navier–Stokes equations are requisite. In a series of papers, Pan & Padoan used a DNS with Reynolds number Re ~ 1000. Here, we perform DNSs with up to Re = 16,100, which allow us to track the motion of particles with Stokes numbers of 0.01 lesssim St lesssim 0.2 in the inertial range. Through the DNSs, we confirm that the rms relative velocity of particle pairs is smaller by more than a factor of two, compared to that by Ormel & Cuzzi. The distributions of the radial relative velocities are highly non-Gaussian. The results are almost consistent with those by Pan & Padoan or Pan et al. at low Re. Also, we find that the sticking rates for equal-sized particles are much higher than those for different-sized particles. Even in the strong-turbulence case with α-viscosity of 10−2, the sticking rates are as high as gsim50% and the bouncing probabilities are as low as ~10% for equal-sized particles of St lesssim 0.01. Thus, turbulent clustering plays a significant role in the growth of centimeter-sized compact aggregates (pebbles) and also enhances the solid abundance, which may lead to the streaming instability in a disk

    Inflation from M-Theory with Fourth-order Corrections and Large Extra Dimensions

    We study inflationary solutions in the M-theory. Including the fourth-order curvature correction terms, we find three generalized de Sitter solutions, in which our 3-space expands exponentially. Taking one of the solutions, we propose an inflationary scenario of the early universe.     Amorphization Effect for Kondo Semiconductor CeRu₂Al₁₀

    We measured the magnetic susceptibility , electrical resistivity , and specific heat of a sputtered amorphous (a-)CeRu2Al10 alloy. value for a-CeRu2Al10 alloy follows a Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior in the high-temperature region, and magnetic transition was not observed down to 2 K. The effective paramagnetic moment is 1.19 /Ce-atom. The resistivity shows a typical disordered alloy behavior, that is, small temperature dependence for the whole temperature range. We observed an enhancement of and in the low-temperature region of  K. The enhancement in is suppressed by applying a magnetic field. It is suggested that this behavior is caused by the Kondo effect

    Glycosylation of Fluorophenols by Plant Cell Cultures

    Fluoroaromatic compounds are used as agrochemicals and released into environment as pollutants. Glycosylation of 2-, 3-, and 4-fluorophenols using plant cell cultures of Nicotiana tabacum was investigated to elucidate their potential to metabolize these compounds. Cultured N. tabacum cells converted 2-fluorophenol into its β-glucoside (60%) and β-gentiobioside (10%). 4-Fluorophenol was also glycosylated to its β-glucoside (32%) and β-gentiobioside (6%) by N. tabacum cells. On the other hand, N. tabacum glycosylated 3-fluorophenol to β-glucoside (17%)

    A new cancer diagnostic system based on a CDK profiling technology

    AbstractA series of molecular pathological investigations of the molecules that stimulate the cyclin dependent kinases (CDK1, 2, 4, and 6) have led to enormous accumulation of knowledge of the clinical significance of these molecules for cancer diagnosis. However, the molecules have yet to be applied to clinical cancer diagnosis, as there is no available technology for application of the knowledge in a clinical setting. We hypothesized that the direct measurement of CDK activities and expressions (CDK profiling) might produce clinically relevant values for the diagnosis. This study investigated the clinical relevance of CDK profiling in gastrointestinal carcinoma tissues by using originally developed expression and activity analysis methods. We have established novel methods and an apparatus for analyzing the expression and activities of the CDK molecules in lysate of tumor tissue in a clinical setting, and examined 30 surgically dissected gastrointestinal carcinomas and corresponding normal mucosal specimens. We demonstrate here that remarkably elevated CDK2 activity is evident in more than 70% of carcinoma tissues. Moreover, a G1-CDK activity profiling accurately mirrored the differences in proliferation between tumor and normal colonic tissues. Our results suggest that CDK profiling is a potent molecular–clinical approach to complement the conventional pathological diagnosis, and to further assist in the individualized medications
