Bone conduction (BC) is the way sound energy is transmitted by the skull bones to the cochlea causing a sound perception. Even if the BC sound transmission involves several pathways including sound pressure induced in the ear canal, inertial forces acting on the middle ear ossicles and cochlear fluids, alteration of the cochlear space, and pressure transmission through the 3rd window of the cochlea, the BC sound ultimately produces a wave motion on the basilar membrane similar to that of air-conducted sound. The efficiency of the BC stimulation is largely dependent on the skull bone where the skull acts as a rigid body at low frequencies and incorporates different types of wave transmission at higher frequencies. The interaural stimulation difference is determined by the difference between contralateral and ipsilateral BC sound transmission: the transcranial BC sound transmission. To benefit from binaural processing, the transcranial transmission should be low, while the same should be high when using BC hearing aids for unilateral deaf subjects. By appropriately positioning the stimulation, high or low transcranial transmission can be achieved.Original Publication: Stefan Stenfelt , Acoustic and physiologic aspects of bone conduction hearing, 2011, Advances in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, (71), 10-21. http://dx.doi.org/10.1159/000323574 Copyright: S. This research aims to produce software the Information System of New Student Acceptance Web Based by PHP and SQL that is able to manage the implementation of New Student Acceptance that is registration, selection, journalizing, announcement, and re-registration. This research also determined the level of proprietary software that has been made. Type of this research is Research and Development. The method of software development is using Waterfall Model. Software testing is done through whitebox and black-box testing, and alpha and beta testing by experts and users. Instruments using the Quality Factor McCall as indicator to determine the level of proprietary software with measurement scales using Likert Scale. Instrument testing is done through validity and reliability test. The techniques of data collection is using interviews and questionnaires. Analysis is using quantitative descriptive analysis. The results of this research showed that the Information System of New Student Acceptance Web Based by PHP and SQL is able to manage the implementation of New Student Acceptance that is registration, selection, journalizing, announcement, and re-registration. The assessment by experts indicates that this software is very worthy in terms of correctness and reliability, while in terms of integrity and usability is worthy. The assessment by teachers indicates that this software is very worthy in terms of correctness, reliability, and integrity, while in terms of usability is worthy. The assessment by students indicates that this software is worthy in terms of correctness and usability, in terms of reliability is very worthy, and in terms of integrity is worthy enough. In a tiny Iowa rural community, stuck like a mud dauber\u27s nest on the banks of the Little Sioux River, a WASP was born and brought up thinking everyone in the world was just like her. As she went on to be educated, she was told she was the product of a culturally deprived childhood. Everyone was not like her. Didn\u27t she know people were different? Didn\u27t she know there were minorities in the world

(excerpt) During the early afternoon of 25 August, 1977, a large European mantid, Mantis religiosa Linnaeus, was observed feeding on an adult male monarch butterfly, Donaus p. plexippus Linnaeus (Danaidae) while clinging to the flower head of a blazing star plant (Liatris sp.) on a cactus prairie at the Allegan State Game Area, Allegan County, Michigan

Emotional Outlet Malls: Exploring Retail Therapy

    Get PDF
People turn to shopping as an emotional outlet. This article focuses on the concept of retail therapy highlighting the personal benefits, possible issues, and research development surrounding the topic. Negative connotations regarding retail therapy exist, and today, scholars are reexamining retail therapy as a distress-motivated act of consumption from a psychological and emotional perspective. A variety of perspectives can be used to analyze shopping therapy as a face-to-face transaction, an online experience, and a simulated experience in order to explain the emotional component related to shopping

Predictors of Swimming Ability among Children and Adolescents in the United States

    Get PDF
Swimming is an important source of physical activity and a life skill to prevent drowning. However, little research has been conducted to understand predictors of swimming ability. The purpose of this study was to understand factors that predict swimming ability among children and adolescents in the United States (US). This was a cross-sectional survey conducted between February and April of 2017 across five geographically diverse cities. Participants were accessed through the Young Christian Men’s Association (YMCA) and included parents of children aged 4–11 years old and adolescents aged 12–17 years old. Independent t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. Several factors were significant (p ≤ 0.05) predictors of swimming ability and explained 53% of the variance in swimming ability. Variables that were positively associated with swimming ability included: ability of parent(s) to swim, child/adolescent age, a best friend who enjoys swimming, water-safety knowledge, pool open all year, and encouragement to swim from parent(s). Variables that were negatively associated with swimming ability included: fear of drowning, being African American, and being female. Interventions and programs to improve the swimming ability of children and adolescents could be developed with these predictors in mind

Later life, inequality and sociological theory

A central concern of many theorists of later life has been to elucidate the processes which shape the marginalisation and relative disadvantage of older people in contemporary society. This concern parallels a current argument within sociological theorising: that life course stage and generational location constitute increasingly important dimensions of social difference and inequality. It is an argument of the paper that many current approaches operate with metaphors of society which ultimately locate those in later life at the margins by virtue of the theoretical terms being used. Too much has been claimed for life course-based divisions and too little has been claimed in respect of life course-related processes. The paper develops an alternative, moral economy, perspective with the aim of furthering analysis of the social organisation of life course-related rights, claims and obligations and their relationship to lifetime inequalities across the population. Such an approach offers a resourceful framework both for interrogating the diverse circumstances and experiences of those in later life, and for conceptualising social inequality and its reproduction
